Hello there whisenhuntn, I'd great to see that you're enjoying Magic so far! It's really good to see that the community is supporting you so well, thanks everyone for contributing!

I personally prefer Modern for its relatively huge pool of cards, but Standard is a great way for newer players to learn the game and for those who like to keep things fresh! Once you feel that you have a good grasp of the game, be sure to also check out the Commander format - It's much more drawn out, but makes for some really fun diplomacy games and impressive plays.

In terms of your deck here, here's some advice:

  • You might considering cutting out some of the slower cards like Cruel Reality. If your gf is bearing down on you with several creatures in play, then it would probably be better to play a more immediate answer such as Languish.

  • Deck synergy is really important, as having a lot of cards that work well together will often beat out decks composed of good cards that don't help each other out. For example, many zombie cards like Relentless Dead or Diregraf Colossus can make an unusually persistent aggro deck when working together. You might consider trying to build you deck around a common theme or two such as -1/-1 counters, zombies, or life stealing.

  • Be careful when using cards like Knight of Infamy or Trespasser's Curse. While they're effective against specific threats, if you opponent doesn't use those threats then they won't be nearly as useful.

  • These aren't all legal cards in Standard, but for Modern and Casual play you could consider cards like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Abyssal Persecutor, Desecration Demon, Dismember, and Grasp of Darkness, to name a few. There's a lot more out there, but these could be some good budget cards to give you some ideas.

  • As stated above, try to keep your deck at 60 cards max and with as few one-ofs as possible in order to improve the odds of getting something useful to whatever situation you're in.

  • Your mana cost curve is very important. For an aggro deck such as this, you'll probably want to have it peak at two and three, if you can.

I hope that this helps you improve your deck! You're showing great potential and it's good to see you stick with it!

Oh, also, if you want to write out a card and have it display the card when moused over (Thoughtseize, for example), add two brackets around the card name like this: [0[thoughtseize]0] (without the 0s).

Also in regards to your previous post, mono-colored decks can be very effective, especially in an aggressive build. Red Deck Wins is a very powerful mono-red deck archetype involving dealing damage directly to your opponent as quickly as possible, for example.

You might want to include some draw in your deck. Aggro decks often "run out of gas", meaning your hand empties out quickly and then you have nothing left to play.

Painful Lesson is a good draw card that came out in Amonkhet.

DubiousDanish says... #11

If she's playing those three, she plans on a long grinding game. She is probably doing so to give you time to do things. It's common to do this when teaching someone a game. What you need to do is try to win the game quickly. Remove your late game threats in favor of a more aggressive early game. She will be building her defenses until she can "ultimate" her Planeswalkers most likely. The final ability of a Planeswalker is often called their ultimate ability.

x1 Oblivion Strike

x2 Painful Lesson

DubiousDanish says... #13

So if you can finish her by turn 7 she will not get to her game plan. The best way to do this is to cast aggressive creatures that can attack her life total and planeswalkers. To help your creatures get through you will need to use spells that remove her defenses, in this case it sounds like she's probably blocking your creatures with her own. So destroy, exile, or make her sacrifice them. She probably has a slight advantage by running three colors because she has a larger pool of cards to choose from, but don't get discouraged because the victory will be that much sweeter!

May 22, 2017 12:08 a.m.

DubiousDanish says... #14

The interaction between Trial of Ambition and Cartouche of Ambition could be your best option to deal with her strategy. Make your creatures better while making hers weaker "and" recasting your trial to make her keep sacrificing her creatures.

May 22, 2017 12:15 a.m.

DubiousDanish says... #15

I'm actually piecing together a deck that is almost entirely about the trial and cartouche synergy. Check out my deck Grix-Crop Elites, I only need the Soul-Scar Mages and I'll have it all together.

May 22, 2017 12:26 a.m.

Argy says... #17

You need to get rid of six more cards.

Put these in the Sideboard, and bring them in against Gods and Indestructible Creatures:

3x Cartouche of Ambition
3x Trial of Ambition

May 22, 2017 5:56 a.m.

DubiousDanish says... #18

Is your Essence Extraction able to remove her creatures reliably? Are there creatures that you need to exile from her graveyard or are you just casting Shamble Back for a zombie token and 2 life? Has Rush of Vitality been useful to your game plan? You mentioned Trample as being a component of her deck, so it would seem like at best it would negate the damage of one creature for one turn. Which essentially puts you behind in tempo, tempo is how advantage is gauged in mtg. If you are spending mana and using cards to only affect one turn while her cards and mana remain in effect, she will slowly pull ahead. How often can you get Ob Nixilis Reignited into play and get any use out of him? I have tried jamming him into five or six of my standard decks; only to end up pulling him back out. He's an awesome card but I would always either draw him too early and have a dead card in hand or play him too late to be worth the mana. The above cards would be the six that I pulled out first if they fail to perform against her deck. I know the general consensus is that auras are bad (because if they kill your creature they spend one card to remove two of yours) and making an opponent sacrifice is less effective than targeting a specific creature, but I really do like how the trials can be recast by interacting with the cartouches.

May 22, 2017 9:11 a.m.

Argy says... #19

See now I WOULDN'T take out Ob Nixilis Reignited.

He has won me a lot of games.

Not only does he give late game card advantage by refilling your hand, he can also act as another source of removal.

I agree that Shamble Back is kind of weak.

May 23, 2017 2:28 a.m.

Sorry bout that, some of the 1x could go unless they're really impactful. I agree about Tormenter and Shamble out for the lands, but Id also drop 1 Splendid Agony and go up to 4 copies of Dread Wanderer or Zulaport Cutthroat, or even a second Gifted.

I usually run 4x of things I wanna see in an opening hand and don't mind drawing multiples of (like Dread Wanderer), and for 1x it's cards that I don't wanna see until late game and it puts the game away when you hit it, or if it's situational and it won't hurt your gameplan if you never see it in a game but it is good enough in certain situations that it deserves a spot. Ob Nixilis Reignited is a good example, or Liliana. The Liliana's Mastery can be potent if you have a lot of Zombies out but will be kinda mediocre if not so it could be ok at 1 copy. Oftentimes people will make a "tribal" deck where almost all creatures are the same type and so a Zombie Tribal deck is a shell where Mastery is always good and you'd want more copies, especially since they stack so a second one cast would essentially make 4/4s and turn your other 3/3s from the first one in play into 4/4s thereby adding 10 power to the field (whereas the first gave 6) not even considering any zombie creatures previously cast.

Well, you're two cards short whisenhuntn. Now that you're leaning into the zombie theme a bit more, liliana, death's majesty --it's not recognizing this card for some reason-- could come back in. She becomes much more relevant the deeper you get into this theme and you're running enough lands now. That leaves one slot to fill besides her.

May 23, 2017 10:36 p.m.

I apologize twofold for A) not including what to remove with my suggestions and B) for repeating advice. As for the latter, I struggle to read through lots of comments due to ADD, which is on me, and one thing is to reset comments time to time, and summarize the changes/evolution of the build in an "update". In my defense, you were quick to accept card suggestions and so I didn't even think to see if anyone had mentioned what I did as I assumed you would have also accepted that advice and made the changes.

You will like T/O. It's a very unique community. I've only come across a handful of jackwagons on here, and they eventually go away. It's mostly people that honestly want to improve their game or decks or deck building skills. If you came from a different card game you'll notice Magic in general is more "civilized". Either way, hope you get her good. :) and be happy you found a thing to do that you both enjoy, helps strengthen relationship!

May 24, 2017 12:26 a.m.

Issue with going over 60 cards is it decreases the odds you'll draw into what you need. Some will play 61, but that's usually it. Ideally every game you play you're aiming for the same overall sequence of plays. The less cards, the more consistently you'll have what you need in hand when you need it

May 24, 2017 12:30 a.m.

DubiousDanish says... #41

I wasn't complaining that you reiterated the advice Jimmy_Chinchila, in some cases it's a necessary process when teaching. I was explaining the logic that led me to suspect sarcasm in Argeaux's comment. My intention is never to offend and I seem to have been misinterpreted somehow. Your comments are definitely welcome and I appreciate having people like you in the community. Players like whisenhuntn can only prosper from a friendly and experienced community taking a peek and leaving a comment.

whisenhuntn if there's only one thing you learn about deck building, it should be this:

Get your deck to 60 cards.

No more, no less.

EXACTLY 60 cards.

Not the 65 you mentioned.

I'm hitting that point pretty hard because it's been told to you a few times, yet you seem to still want to put more than 60 cards in your deck.

You aren't allowed to play with less than 60 cards.

been working crazy hours this week...

okay. i updated the deck and added some cards to my acquire list.

im trying to peak this deck @ 2 & 3 cmc

if i play to finish my gf by turn 7/8

i just pump out tokens and +1/+1 them ... and i did my first 3-way mtg duel.. i lost HARD the first time...

the next game my first hand was 4 swamps & x1 zulaport & x1 dread wanderer & x1 never return & x1 plague belcher

by turn 7 i was facing 2 planeswalkers and i had 6 untapped swamps and i had BOTH never/returns in my hand

You can guess what i did........ my gfs friend promptly picked up her cards and walked over to another table at the local mtg store

now to focus on the gf. she lost. i was still at 14 health.

We played mtg for a little over 3 1/2 hours

(i would say i felt like i was winning 75% of the time) ... & the friend came back tried to play again...

Fast forward to turn 5..... (on 2nd 3_way involving gf and her friend)

gf friend does control deck this time....

(my noob brain tries to think of an appropriate way to handle the control deck)

THE BEST idea i had in the moment was to

(literally my exact thought)

things got so out of control i was actually starting to laugh at how out of control it was...

I stopped counting turns and wanted the biggest mass of zombies and +1/+1 counters i could play..

at the end i used Lord of the Accursed "all zombies gain menace until end of turn"

it was overkill. i should be ashamed.

until i learned that HER boyfriend is mr. #1 fmn dude insert eyeroll

and she was playing with his control deck

"i now understand why shes mad" i said

"Why do you think?" gf says

" i think it was the never after i used on her planeswalker" i said

" Honey. (insert eye contact w/gf) she(gf friend) thought you got lucky... then you won the 1st game.. she got his(#1 dude) deck to flatten you... and you think its the sorcery card that made her mad?

"Should i have apoplogised?" i said

"No you did good you just might want to try that deck at fnm" she said

(more stories? just ask!)

im having a difficulty getting the Westvale Abbey  Flip like does the colorless mana help me in any way?

(want to accquire)

2x Diregraf Colossus

(what classifies as a "zombie spell")

4x Languish

4x Relentless Dead

2x Westvale Abbey  Flip

should i go to the local FNM with this deck?

If not what cards should i add? / Remove?

June 1, 2017 5:49 a.m.

whisenhuntn says... #49

Omg i know nothing about playing @fnm

like the rules and other stuff i literally am starting here with 0 knowledge...

should i wait? to gain some more playtime?

or should i sign up for the next fnm i can make it to and just observe

should i play?

Halp interwebz!

DubiousDanish says... #50

Mmmmm... sounds like a tasty three way whisenhuntn. I'm happy to hear that your deck is yielding positive results and that you are enjoying it.

Regarding Westvale Abbey  Flip: the fact that it produces colorless mana is not what you're using it for, the flip-side of the card is why people love that card. In your deck you manifest so many creatures that transforming it will be relatively easy. In a mirror match (playing against another zombie build) or against another deck that has ways to stop your creatures from getting into their life points, Ormendahl can be quite profane indeed!

Regarding Diregraf Colossus: The line that says creature is where a card's type is listed. The - denotes the separation between types and subtypes. All nonland cards are considered spells until you resolve them. So any card that says zombie in this line is in fact a zombie spell. We're dipping a bit deeper into the rules now, so if you require further clarification on anything feel free to request it.

Languish is not standard legal so I wouldn't recommend using it. If you'd like to have access to a similar effect that is legal you can try Biting Rain, Demon of Dark Schemes, Flaying Tendrils, Make Obsolete, Rags / Riches, Rising Miasma, or Yahenni's Expertise. Given your goal of "trying to peak this deck at 2 and 3 cmc" Yahenni's Expertise may be your best choice.

Regarding Relentless Dead: I had considered recommending this when you started leaning on the zombie theme. It's an amazing card, but $16 a pop is a bit steep for a new player. If you feel that you're ready to refine your deck and jump into competitive play you should definitely invest in the play set.

Regarding Friday Night Magic: It truly is the best night of the week! To register in a competitive tournament you will need a DCI number, this number is like your WOTC Social Security number. Any event, anywhere, anytime, and any place will track your rankings and planeswalker points using this number. The next thing you need is a printed decklist to turn in when you register. This list includes every card in your mainboard and sideboard (which you still need to put together). From basic lands to planeswalkers if you plan on playing a card at the event it needs to be on this list. Once all of the players are registered, the event organizer will put everyone into a system. This system will pair everyone up and they will post these pairings. Once they post the pairings you have 50 minutes until the round ends. There are 10 minute breaks between rounds where players have time to stretch and the organizers have time to enter the results of the previous round's matches into the system. The system will match the players based on their standings thus far, win versus win and loss versus loss usually. The pairings are posted and then the next round begins, this cycle repeats until completion. Since you already have a standard deck built and you have an interest in giving it a shot it couldn't hurt to try!

If you would like to try a similarly structured event without the stress of being a competitive environment, check with your lgs to see when their next draft is. Drafting is a ton of fun and by far my favorite way to play mtg. In a draft it is like a condensed mtg experience, you choose the cards you like then build a deck out of them and then you play with that deck against other people who have just done the same. Instead of bringing a constructed deck, you buy in to play (typically $12-15). Instead of jumping right in to matches, there is a draft round. This draft round consists of each player receiving three packs from the event organizer. Then when the round starts you open your first pack (separate the basic land and token) and choose one card to keep. You pass the remaining cards in that pack to the player to your immediate left. You take the stack from the player to your right and choose a card from this pack. You pass the remaining cards to your left and continue these steps until all the cards have been taken. Then everyone opens their second pack chooses a card and passes the rest to their right. This step is the same as the last pack you just pass to the right instead. Then the third pack goes to your left again. Once everyone has their pile of cards, it's time to build a deck! The minimum deck size is 40 cards, usually 17 creatures/ 6 non-creature spells/ 17 lands. Your lgs will have basic lands on hand and you can use whatever cards you drafted in your deck, no restrictions! If you drafted 8 copies of a creature that you absolutely love, you're free to run all 8 of them. Then they will post the pairings for round one and it starts to feel like a regular sanctioned event. I would recommend trying to keep your deck less than three colors so you can have a smooth experience. Try to focus on badass creatures and removal, these are the keys to winning a draft.

As always if you would like further explanations feel free to ask!

June 1, 2017 12:33 p.m.

Argy says... #51

I wouldn't jump into draft yet. It's got its own very complicated set of rules for how to do well.

I would start playing some FNM. It can't hurt to see how your deck, and how you play it, goes at tournament level.

I've never been asked to submit a decklist for FNM, and I've played in three different countries.

I like stories whisenhuntn! Does your girlfriend know that you use tappedout? How did she react when you started updating your deck? Has she adjusted her deck to better handle your deck?

June 2, 2017 3:03 p.m.

Revised build looks nice. Westvale Abbey could spice up your manabase a bit.

We need updates! Have you beaten her? If so was she like shocked with what got dropped on her out of the blue! Details! You could do periodic "Update"s whenever you two duel, of what she brought against you and the W/L record, lol!

What would be even funnier is if she also had a T/O account and was secretly also honing her deck!

Just a thought: you may want to "Archive" your comment section as it grows super long so folks don't have to scroll so far through comments like mine (especially on phones) to comment and such. You can add to the description what changes you made so people don't suggest things you've already pulled.

Nice Top 100! Congrats! Keep brewing, make some decks that would be fun to play even if you don't have the cards, that way you can Playtest to see if you like it before investing in the cards. You can also put cards into the "acquire" board in edit menu to keep track of what you need. And go to edit on this deck and click the "sync with inventory" so you can keep track of your collection!
