Upwelling Discussion

Thank you for your patience, telling people to "optimize their fun" tends to (understandably) cause annoyance. It's interesting to hear that Mystic Barrier can be used with the commander as situational utility without compromising overall entertainment

As a side note, if anyone else wants to use the Mana Echoes idea, then I should probably point out that I forgot about the obvious mana sink/mana preserver Gemstone Array (there's also Upwelling I guess but that one seems more group hug:ish, with the typical risk of producing degenerate play when coming into contact with the wrong kind of opposing deck). Similarly, Primeval Bounty would probably work as a fun Academy Rector target if anyone wants to try making the aforementioned "3 or greater power" build.

If you playtest this deck, you will see that the speed at which it ramps almost always gives you more mana than necessary by turn 5-7. You can win with a helix pinnacle or 400 Wolfbriar Elemental wolves easily by turn 6. A recent playtest of mine allowed me to do over 8 million damage by turn 6 with no infinite combo. So, the fact that Omnath, Locus of Mana allows you to store mana is nice, but doesn't compete with the speed Shizuko, Caller of Autumn gives. but Omnath, Locus of Mana and Upwelling are in this deck for that purpose.

Yes! I agree with Winterblast, Magic computer software is the best way to learn nowadays. When I learned (way back in 1994) we used that insanly complicated rule book that came in starter decks to figure it out. It didn't work very well. My buddy and I had a Revised starter and a bunch of Fallen Empires packs and we tried to learn all on our own. We were 12 or 13 years old and nobody helped us at first. I thought the mana pool grew every turn (like with Upwelling in play) and so our decks had almost no land in it. Later after we had truly learned the game I taught my dad. I remember he couldn't understand why having 2 Zuran Orbs in play didn't give him 4 life per land. Actually that argument led to him quitting the game. Fast forward to today. I got a magic online account less than a year ago (finally) and my understanding of the stack and priority has advanced from it even after having been a magic player for almost the entire existence of the game.

Not sure how I feel about Upwelling. Because your opponents mana pool will not empty either I feel like it makes you at a disadvantage against anything that actually ramps. Also, you may want to consider adding Odric, Master Tactician as well. Being able to decide who blocks where is a super powerful ability late game when your board is massive. those are just some ideas while I'm at work. If I get a chance, I'll take another look when I'm free. Looks cool so far.
