Sigil Captain

Creature — Rhino Soldier

Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature is 1/1, put two +1/+1 counters on it.

Your best option for a commander would be Satyr Enchanter

Runner's up could be:

Juniper Order Ranger, Conclave Guildmage, Sigil Captain, (May need to change your creature base a little for Sigil Captain. And lastly I think Oakhame Ranger.

Two reasons. First it only works when a token enters the battlefield. Our other counter sources that aren’t Doubling Season trigger when any creature enters, so they are not limited to making saprolings with Ghave. The second reason is it only puts counters on itself which means it won’t also function with persist creatures even if it wasn’t limited to tokens. It’s actually a more narrow Champion of Lambholt who is a better counter source and was removed from the deck only because it didn’t also combo with persist creatures. If a combo source can combo with both Ghave and persist, then it has more combo synergy than those that don’t. The only sources that don’t are Doubling Season and Illusionist’s Bracers (effectively DS when equipped to Ghave), and they combo better with Earthcraft or Ashnod's Altar than Champion of Lambholt, Sigil Captain, or this guy.

PookandPie on Ghave Counters and Tokens

Hi there

I've played Ghave for about 7 years now, and I think I have some advice that may be able to help you out. My deck is here, for reference: Ghave: Baby Makin' and Alimony

One thing I notice right off the bat is you have several slower token producers, but none of them are as efficient as Ghave. You also have several sources for +1/+1 counters for Ghave to turn into tokens, but you're missing some very strong ones that I'll recommend now:

Ivy Lane Denizen is extremely good. Unlike Phytohydra, it's not reliant upon combat to make tokens, just the fact that a token entered will allow you to put a counter somewhere, which you can use to make another token. Similarly, Good-Fortune Unicorn , Juniper Order Ranger , and Bloodspore Thrinax are way better at this than several cards you're currently running. Sigil Captain is another solid choice.

I would recommend cutting Phytohydra, Grateful Apparition, Mikaeus, the Lunarch, Managorger Hydra, and Phantom Nishoba to add in the above cards, as they'll help you produce tokens way more consistently with just Ghave.

Similarly, you need mana in order to make tokens, so adding in things like Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip and Cryptolith Rite will help your mana production sizably. Seedborn Muse can function like a token doubler, as if you have a source of +1/+1 counters (like Sigil Captain, for example), and only 5 mana, with Seedborn you can produce 20 tokens in a round of turns instead of just 5 (and they'll all be 2/2s at minimum to boot).

Doubling Season and the like are expensive, but Illusionist's Bracers is much, much cheaper and effectively becomes a Doubling Season when attached to Ghave (as you remove 1 +1/+1 counter to make 2 tokens, or sac 1 creature to put 2 +1/+1 counters on something). Definitely worth an include, in my opinion.

To fit in some of the other things mentioned, like Seedborn, Cryptolith Rite, etc., you could probably remove Scute Mob (it does nothing until you have 5 lands), Voldaren Pariah (this is not a great creature), you actually are one card short as Eliminate the Competition is in here twice, and then you could probably cut a Planeswalker as well.

Ghave helms a really fun deck so I hope this helps.
