Vibrating Sphere and Sigil Captain interactions

Asked by UniqueUserID 8 years ago

Just trying to wrap my head around static abilities and the stack.

Let's say Vibrating Sphere and Sigil Captain are on the battlefield for all 5 questions AND it's the opponents turn.

1) Brass Man enters the battlefield, he will be considered a 1/1 creature and receive the counters? Seems simple enough.

2) Brass Man is enters the battlefield and Ronin Warclub is also on the field. He will be 1/1 and both effects will trigger. So can I choose Sigil Captain to resolve after Ronin Warclub effect and get both the bonuses?

3) Kavu Lair and Ronin Warclub is on the field. I summon Brass Man once again. I'm guessing Kavu Lair won't let me draw since when counters are applied or the equipment being equipped Brass Man is no longer considered to be "Entering the Battlefield" despite his power.

4) If any 1/1 creature such as Brass Gnat enters the battlefield. Are they considered 1/0 creatures for all toughness checks and the like and simply explode? But if other effects (non-static )could increase this negative toughness to 1 will it reap the counters?

5) And finally, Arcbound Bruiser enters the battlefield. Will he receive the bonus 2 counters from Sigil Captain?

Most of your questions can be answered by saying that with static effects like Vibrating Sphere, there is no point in which the card exists onto the battlefield while not being affected by it. When you play Grizzly Bears during your turn, it will enter the battlefield already as a 4/2, and so on.

Let's take a more in-depth look.

1) If you somehow manage to have a Brass Man enter the battlefield under your control during your opponent's turn, it will be a 1/1 and get the counters from Sigil Captain

2)You can get both the bonuses, but you need to resolve the triggers in the opposite order (resolve Sigil Captain first, Ronin Warclub second). The ability on Sigil Captain is an "intervening if" trigger, meaning it will check its condition upon triggering and then also on resolution. If the Ronin Warclub trigger has already resolved, when the Sigil Captain trigger goes to resolve it will see a 3/2 Brass Man and the trigger will be removed from the stack since its condition is now invalid. If you stack the triggers the other way, though, everything will be copacetic - first the Sigil Captain trigger will try to resolve, see a 1/1 Brass Man and resolve correctly; then the Ronin Warclub will resolve and make you the proud owner of a 5/4 Brass Man (soon to be a 7/6 on your turn).

3) You are correct. Kavu Lair will check when Brass Man enters the battlefield, see a 1/1, and won't trigger. Everything that happens from now on is going to take place too late for the Brass Man to trigger the Kavu Lair

4) If a creature with base toughness 2 or less enters the battlefield under your opponent's control, Vibrating Sphere will reduce its toughness to zero, and it will die when state-based actions are checked next. Piling up enough static effects like Glorious Anthem can make it so that the creature has enough toughness to survive. Most non-static effects, though will take place too late - for example, if you flash in an Ashcoat Bear and you have Cathars' Crusade, the bear will die before it gets a counter from the crusade.

5) No, because Arcbound Bruiser will be a 3/1 when he enters the battlefield.

  1. yes, he is considered a 1/1 when it enters the battlefield.

  2. you can stack the abilities as you want, but you would need the Sigil Captain's ability to resolve first, or it will do nothing.

  3. no draw

  4. non-static effects will not stop the 0 toughness creature from being sent to the graveyard.

  5. no , cause he enters as a 3/1.
