Caesar, Legion's Emperor

Legendary Creature — Human Soldier

Whenever you attack, you may sacrifice another creature. When you do, choose two —

  • Create two 1/1 red and white Soldier creature tokens with haste that are tapped and attacking.
  • You draw a card and you lose 1 life.
  • Caesar, Legion's Emperor deals damage equal to the number of creature tokens you control to target opponent.

Since both Ankle Shanker and Caesar, Legion's Emperor trigger on attacking their controller can put them on the stack in whatever order they choose.

Haste can be useful even if the tokens come in tapped and attacking. The most obvious interaction in these colors is with extra combat spells. Breath of Fury with Caesar and a way to prevent your tokens from being blocked is infinite combats.

If a player attacks with both Ankle Shanker and Caesar, Legion's Emperor, can that player stack the abilities of those creatures in such a way that the shanker grants first strike and deathtoucch to the tokens that Caesar produces?

As a bonus question, why do the tokens that Caesar generates has haste if they enter the battlefield attacking? Is that not redundant?

I have replaced The Immortal Sun with Caesar, Legion's Emperor, which reduced this deck's average converted mana cost from 3.81 to 3.77, because, as great as the sun was, Caesar has a better synergy with this deck's strategy.

I would recommend using Breath of Fury if you want an infinite combo with Caesar, Legion's Emperor. It produces infinite combat phases as long as you kick it off with combat damage to a player.

I haven't had a chance to test any of these irl yet Last_Laugh. People's schedules haven't lined up and all that, so haven't proxied anything yet.

From lots of goldfishing some of the new stuff over the past week, I've generally liked the pacing of what I currently have included. ED-E seemed kinda slow and vulnerable to removal from creature & artifact removal for my tastes. In terms of the other stuff though:

  • Craig Boone, Novac Guard - A personal favorite character from Fallout NV. I do like the option for potentially repeatable targeted removal on creatures, or opponents can take it to the face if they don't want their commander or value creature removed. The damage will balloon, & Lifelink makes it enticing.

  • Kellogg, Dangerous Mind - An upgrade for any decks that were running Captain Lannery Storm. I doubt I'll use the creature theft option, I just really like the Haste and First Strike on a 3/2 body.

  • Paladin Elizabeth Taggerdy - Probably the one I'm most iffy about since I've removed Fireflux Squad and Winota in the past. I like the exploration of the design space with other stuff like Ilharg, Shadowfax, Lord of Horses, and Arni Metalbrow. At baseline, I like that Taggerdy is another source of draw, & her Cheat In ceiling goes up with the power anthems in most Isshin decks.

  • Caesar, Legion's Emperor - Could become a staple for Isshin token decks. Each modal option is very relevant to what these decks want to do, & they typically have the tokens to spare.

Like I wrote in the Fallout Updates blurb, I think Pip-Boy 3000 might be a potential replacement for Sword of the Animist in decks that are still running it, mostly for the utility options. I doubt I'll run it, but it's there.

I think at face value, Caesar, Legion's Emperor will end up using a lot of the same tech that Isshin, Two Heavens as One does. You could probably use more of the token generators that Isshin would, if you want to check out the Isshin token theme EDHREC page.

In looking at your list, I do have a few suggestions, if you're open to them:

  • I think you could probably drop down to at most 38 lands, or 36 at the least.

  • It seems a little counter-intuitive, but I'd recommend replacing some of those land slots with mana rocks like Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Orzhov Signet and the others in color in that cycle, or Talisman of Indulgence and the others in this cycle (Talismans of Conviction and Hierarchy). Replacing some land slots can help you ramp out some rocks in your early turns, and reduces your likelihood of mana flooding.

  • Some of these land slots could also be swapped out for more creature token generation. Some of my personal favorites from playing Isshin: Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon, Hammers of Moradin, Hanweir Garrison  Meld, Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin, and Mardu Ascendancy. I think your deck could benefit from a few more token producers that can get set up before Caesar hits the field, and also takes pressure off him being one of your primary token producers.

  • If you have the budget for it, I'd recommend adding a decent board protection package from stuff like Reconnaissance, Dolmen Gate, Teferi's Protection, Clever Concealment, and Iroas, God of Victory. The more you can protect your board, the more you can maintain momentum down the stretch. In case you're unfamiliar with Reconnaissance, this EDHREC article explains how you can use it as a pseudo-Vigilance anthem to pull your creatures out of combat, after the damage step.

  • Lastly, I'd recommend swapping out some of your creatures that are north of 5 cmc for some of the stuff listed above. Between swapping land slots, and swapping a couple of higher cmc creatures, I think could help the deck be a bit more cohesive.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Down to discuss more if you're up for it. Best of luck

In case you hadn't seen yet, but Caesar, Legion's Emperor is live on the site now.

If you're looking for a potential infinite combat combo, Aggravated Assault + Phyrexian Altar + Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon at 5+ power (or just enough token production on attack tbh).

Hellrider and Brutal Hordechief are some fun go-wide group slug options. Witty Roastmaster is another Impact Tremors effect, but might not be as necessary since you already have Corpse Knight.

Devilish Valet could also work to potentially one-shot somebody with enough creature token creation on an attack.

I'd also highly recommend Dolmen Gate and/or Reconnaissance as board protection effects. I get that you have some aristocratsy stuff going on, but this is mostly to save some of your key token creators that have to attack. In case you're unfamiliar with Reconnaissance, this EDHREC article helps detail some of its timing to act as a pseudo-Vigilance anthem, and save your creatures from combat after they've dealt damage.

Thanks for the suggestion. Anduril and the other LotR December drops are things I've had on my radar since they recently leaked, and Michigone also brought them to my attention. Definitely something I'll keep an eye on. With the exception of Caesar, Legion's Emperor, for play testing purposes, I'm waiting to see what Caves of Ixalan has in store for my decks before making any more edits.

I'm not really in a rush to add Anduril, as I've moved away from equipment (with the exception of Swiftfoot Boots & Lightning Greaves), in recent edits. I think I value group slug effects more than I do P/T buffs, as I've tended to close games out more with that than combat damage.

The more I look at it, Anduril kinda reminds me of Cathars' Crusade with some extra steps. Much like Cathar's Crusade, Venture into the Dungeon/Initiative, and The Ring Tempts You I'm putting less priority on cards that create extra in-game actions that have to be kept track of. Keeping track of dice/counters on a growing board state isn't my jam. Regardless, Anduril should be good in +1/+1 counter strats, and more Voltron/Equipment focused Isshin decks.
