Caley's deck - The Doom That Came To Sarnath. This deck brought to you by Y'golonac - "For that hands-on experience."

Game 1

Enemy wins the toss and plays first. He keeps his opener.

Caley keeps an opening hand of Island, Forest, 2x Birds of Paradise, Garruk, Primal Hunter, Viral Drake, Acidic Slime.

T1

E plays Razorverge Thicket for Avacyn's Pilgrim and passes.

C draws Hinterland Harbor, plays Forest, casts Birds of Paradise, and passes.

T2

E plays Plains, casts Mentor of the Meek, and passes.

C draws Moldgraf Monstrosity. He plays Hinterland Harbor, casts another Birds of Paradise, and passes.

T3

E plays Sunpetal Grove and attacks with Mentor of the Meek, which hits. (Enemy 20, Caley 18). Then he casts Day of Judgment and passes.

Not a great play. I haven't shown him yet that I really NEED these birds; they are really scaring him. As a result, he drops 3 cards, including a 3-cost drawing engine and a 4-cost wrath, to kill 2 1-mana creatures.

C draws Forest and plays Island. He passes.

T4

E plays Plains and casts Parallel Lives. He passes.

Mentor of the Meek raised my suspicions, but this is now definitely a token deck.

C draws Volition Reins, plays Forest, and casts Viral Drake. C passes.

Hopefully he can't go TOO crazy before I take out that Parallel Lives with Acidic Slime.

T5

E plays Razorverge Thicket and casts another Parallel Lives. He passes.

Uh huh. Well. Really need that land.

C draws Island and plays it. He casts Acidic Slime blowing up a Parallel Lives. C attacks with Viral Drake and passes. (Enemy 20 1p, Caley 18).

T6

E plays Plains and passes.

C draws Rampant Growth. he casts Garruk, Primal Hunter and makes a beast token.

Before he gets Oblivion Ringed, most probably.

C attacks with the Drake and the Slime, which hit. (Caley 18, Enemy 18 2p).

T7

E concedes.

Apparently not on that Oblivion Ring. It would not be impossible for him to win this game, so this concession is premature, but it IS very unlikely.

Sideboarding

Caley inserts 3x Bramblecrush and removes 3x Skinshifter.

It was between removing this and Ambush Viper, but I like the deathtouch over the ability to stop pesky spirit fliers.

Game 2

E plays first and keeps the opener.

C keeps an opening hand of Forest, Ghost Quarter, Birds of Paradise, Ambush Viper, Moldgraf Monstrosity, Dissipate, Viral Drake.

Slightly lean, but hopefully the Birds will see me through for a little while.

T1

E plays Razorverge Thicket for Doomed Traveler and passes.

C draws Forest, plays it, casts Birds of Paradise, and passes.

T2

E plays Plains and casts Intangible Virtue. He attacks with Traveler and hits. (Enemy 20, Caley 19). E passes.

C draws Acidic Slime, plays a Forest, and passes.

Need bluuuuueeee.

T3

E plays Razorverge Thicket and attacks with Traveler, then passes. (Enemy 20, Caley 18).

C draws Cudgel Troll, plays Ghost Quarter, and passes.

Tapping out for the Troll would make me a very unhappy camper after a wrath.

T4

E plays a Plains and attacks with the Traveler, which hits. (Enemy 20, Caley 17).

Oh no. I'm not going to mess with that guy on that creepy road. He can just keep right on walking.

E casts Parallel Lives and passes.

C draws Dissipate. He does nothing and passes.

Deck, why do you mock me so?

T5

E just attacks with Doomed Traveler and passes. (Enemy 20, Caley 16).

C draws Stoic Rebuttal. He casts Ambush Viper and passes.

Just because it's better than discarding it. Hopefully I can fool him into having the Mana Leak Ph33R

T6

E casts Oblivion Ring targeting Birds of Paradise and passes.

Very smart play. Although he forgot to attack.

C draws Island and plays it, then passes.

Oh sure, give me the Island now.

T7

E does nothing but play a Plains and passes.

Why has he stopped attacking with the Traveler? It's not like I'd block and give him two flying 3/3s instead of his vanilla 1/1.

C draws Birds of Paradise and casts it, then passes.

T8

E does nothing but play a Forest and passes.

He's down to 2 cards which I assume have to be answers.

C draws Dissipate. He casts Acidic Slime destroying Parallel Lives and passes.

This card is WAY too dangerous to keep alive, even if it means I have to tap out with four counterspells in my hand.

T9

E does nothing and passes.

C draws Forest, plays it, and passes.

T10

E does nothing and passes.

C draws Forest, plays it, and passes.

T11

E plays a Forest and passes.

C draws Volition Reins. He casts Cudgel Troll and passes.

It's either here or in the trash. Plus, I have counterspell mana available.

T12

E plays Plains and passes.

C draws Rampant Growth and plays it for an Island, then passes.

T13

E attacks with Doomed Traveler.

Weird. Why has he not done it all these turns and now suddenly started? I figured he drew a wrath, so now might be a good time to block it.

C blocks with Cudgel Troll. The Traveler send up its flying spirit, a 3/3 thanks to double Intangible Virtue. E casts Oblivion Ring on Cudgel Troll.

Huh. So maybe he DOESN'T have wrath, or is afraid of being outraced. Strange.

C draws Rampant Growth, but casts Viral Drake.

Stops the spirit cold.

C attacks with Ambush Viper and Acidic Slime. They hit. (Caley 16, Enemy 16). C passes.

Would have been happy to trade either of these for the spirit token. Just as an instructional point, if he had decided to block, killing Ambush Viper is the correct play because you don't want to send Acidic Slime to the graveyard in a deck running Moldgraf Monstrosity.

T14

E plays Forest and casts Oblivion Ring, but Caley Dissipates it. E casts Timely Reinforcements, putting 3 soldiers in play, all 3/3s thanks to Intangible Virtue. E passes.

I want to keep my drake alive, thus the Dissipate on the O-Ring.

C draws Volition Reins. He casts Rampant Growth fetching an Island and passes.

T15

E casts Overrun. C Stoic Rebuttals it.

A denial.

C draws Forest and plays it. He casts Moldgraf Monstrosity and passes.

Great to have enough mana left over for a counterspell.

T16

E casts Avacyn's Pilgrim and passes.

C draws Island and plays it. He casts Volition Reins on an Intangible Virtue and passes.

I don't want to offer a trade of my Moldgraf Monstrosity for a bunch of his dudes yet because the Monstrosity wrath-proofs my board- a Day of Judgment will leave me with two living creatures, and one of them might be a Acidic Slime hitting again. I want him to have to think about that, so I'll wait until I can deal with that other Intangible Virtue first.

T17

E plays Avacyn's Pilgrim and passes.

C draws Chancellor of the Tangle. He plays it and passes.

First, this!

T18

E plays Oblivion Ring, but Caley Dissipates it.

No no no no no no no no.

C draws Acidic Slime. He plays it, destroying the last Intangible Virtue. He attacks with the Moldgraf Monstrosity and the Chancellor of the Tangle, which both hit for full damage. (Caley 16, Enemy 2).

T19

E plays a Plains and concedes.

Thoughts

1 - Bad run for the enemy deck. It was slightly misplayed in a few spots, but I felt like it also got a considerable number of crappy draws, getting way too many token pumping effects and lands, and not enough tokens. I never saw the deck, so I couldn't tell you if this was just bad luck or a badly constructed deck; probably the former.

2 - Acidic Slime is SO AWESOME. I love it.

3 - In other news, I enjoy countering spells. That is all.

in game 2 you could've had enough mana to start countering your opponent turn 3 on turn 1 play birds like you did, turn two ghost quarter then pass, end of turn blow up your own forest searching for an island, then turn 3 play forest. you have a forest an island and a birds plenty of many for that dissipate.

@SwiftDeath

You're right. That did not occur to me during the game. I'm still getting used to fixing with Ghost Quarter . It's one of the card's neat uses; the play completely evaded me. Even so, I'm not sure I would have made it if I had noticed it just because I could use those counterspells one way or another and it does cost a land to use Ghost Quarter .

Game 1, turn 1. He could not have played card:Avacyn's Pilgrim because Razorverge Thicket would enter play tapped surely?

Nevermind, getting my Dual Lands mixed up XD

I always make that mistake too. I'm like "Wait, how did Sulfur Falls enter untapped; there are four lands out?"
