I'm a bad magic player —July 28, 2018
I suck at this game. Okay, I went 2-1 at the GP side event and had a lot of fun. But I should have been 3-0 and I threw the game away to be 2-1 instead. But Delver felt like a good card in this tournament too. I'm gaining more faith in grixis delver. Also I have another insane and spicy change in mind - Creeping Tar Pit. I snagged a copy today and got it signed by the artist, so now I want to play it. It's a terrible card for this deck, but I'm determined to make it work.
Round 1: Burn. He burned me out and got game 1. Oh yeah, he also had Vexing Devil. I took a lot of pain from my lands. I probably could have sequenced my lands better, but oh well. His sideboard had 3 cards in it. But his main deck had everything of stock burn, except that it also played Vexing Devil. I don't recall which of the following games were 2 or 3. In one of them I landed Tasigur, which ate a Swiftspear then died to a burn spell, but I had another in my hand which I played. I think I won both games with Tasigur in play. I definitely had a good number of counterspells in both games, as I like to do. I recall flashing in a Snapcaster Mage to block Goblin Guide too. Game 3 he definitely put me to 1 life. Fun games, but I won games 2 and 3.
Round 2 was some type of Vengevine deck. I saw Faithless Looting, Insolent Neonate, Bloodghast, Greater Gargadon, Collective Brutality, Bridge from Below, Gravecrawler, and other fun things like that. Game 1 he suspended a Greater Gargadon early, but I had Mana Leak so I wasn't too worried. I got down a Delver and it took him to 0. I think this was the first time I've ever played an early Delver of Secrets Flip and then killed someone with it. I didn't know he had Bloodghast or Bridge or Gravecrawler going into game 2, so I didn't board in Anger of the Gods. Luckily in game 2 I was able to block a zombie with Delver of Secrets Flip to exile 3 Bridge from Below from his graveyard and then found a Nihil Spellbomb a few turns later to eat 3 Faithless Looting, a Gravecrawler, and a Bloodghast. That was about all it took. Super cool deck, but it didn't seem very good.
Game 3: opponent didn't want to split. That was fine, it makes the games more interesting. He's on Merfolk. Game 1 I think I'm doing pretty well until a surprise Master of Waves screws me. Game 2 I Mana Leaked his turn 2 Silvergill Adept, killed his lords, then killed him. Game 3 I got him good with Anger of the Gods. He was on 2 lands, a vial, and 0 cards in hand. He upticked vial to 4, and put 2 Master of Waves
into play. 1 of them I blocked with Snapcaster Mage. I played Anger of the Gods to kill the tokens made by the other. And then I had a Tasigur in play and he had a Master. And I was at 3 life. I had to crack a fetch and dropped to 2 life. We passed back and forth for a lot of turns and I gained value with Tasigur. Eventually I got K-command to get Snapcaster back and start doing things. I got a pyromancer into play, had Terminate and Lightning Bolt and 2 Mana Leak and Anger of the Gods in hand. Then came the fateful turn. I attacked with Snapcaster Mage, forgetting that Mutavault was a 3/3 because of Master. He activates it, I realize my mistake and activate Field of Ruin to kill it. He takes 2 from Snap. I now have 2 mana open. Then he untaps and topdecks Merfolk Trickster. He plays it, taps down my Tasigur, and swings with his pro-red Master of Waves
. Ugh. Stupid me. If I hadn't attacked I could have played 2 Mana Leak to counter Trickster OR I could have had another blocker on the field. So much sadness because at that point I had the game in the bag. I also never saw a Fatal Push in all 3 games against him. One of those would have been nice.
Oh well. The prize wall sucked so I traded my 100 prize tickets to another player for a damaged Creeping Tar Pit, a Rest in Peace, and a Glacial Fortress. I ran over to get the Tar Pit signed by the artist, so now I have that and will never trade it because I can't part with cards that are signed. It seems very bad in here. But at the same time really want to play it. I've felt very light on lands recently so I want to go up to 21. Also Thoughtseize has been okay. I also haven't played against Tron yet, which is where it matters a lot more.
