Minion Rushdown (Gruul Dragon Cheating)

Modern Creature Cheat Dragons Flying RG (Gruul)

Sideboard

A fairly significant retooling of the deck. The 3 drop 6 power guys were a little slow, and the draw spells really only took up slots that could otherwise hold combo pieces.

The general idea here is a turn 2 kill: open with Minion of the Mighty, hit it with Scale Up, drop Terror of Mount Velus, and swing in for 22 damage. Pretty simple.

Can't really rely on the pure nut draw though, so there's a few other things in here. If you can't get Scale Up, drawing into Revenge of the Hunted or getting two of your other +3 pump spells will do the trick. For other dragons, we have Moltensteel Dragon to help kick out lethal (provided you have at least 19 life and an untapped red source), and a secret secondary combo with Old Gnawbone and Hellkite Tyrant for those pesky opponents where 20+ damage in a single turn isn't quite good enough. If you need to tutor a creature there's Commune with Nature, and we also have some protection and haste for our Minion with a couple of our pump spells, Wild Shape and Reckless Charge.

In the sideboard we've got Veil of Summer for some defense against control, and a couple extra dragons that can be subbed in for various situations: Chromium, the Mutable for a guy with some built-in protection, Drakuseth, Maw of Flames as removal with a beefy bod, and Utvara Hellkite to go a little bit wider and try to keep 6 power on the board through a removal spell.

Current issues with this deck:

  • Moltensteel. It's the only other turn 2 kill capable dragon that I've been able to find in modern, but it requires all the stars to align. You can only take 1 damage, and your opponent cannot gain any life. You also have to have an untapped red source available, which means only the +6 pumps will get the job done. It makes the mana base a real puzzle to solve, and if there's Any other dragon that can bring you up to 20 or more damage in one swing I'd love to hear about it.
  • Excessive Mulligans. You more or less are forced to mull until you have Minion in hand, and every slot dedicated to search power seems to dilute the deck and make it more difficult to actually hit the combo.

As always, suggestions are appreciated, thank you!
