Some Fine Tuning Soon(tm) —Sept. 14, 2021

After a few insane amount of hours spent online playing this deck and in private groups I merely had time to update the deck to it's current iteration... I have some catching up to do

<<< (+++ 36-9 W/L over the span of 3 weekend xD , not as good as my Hearthstone streak of 70-4 W/L ratio :'( ) >>>

hi first of all i love the deck and primeer, +1 from me I´m playing in a fairly casual and creature heavy meta and was wondering if the deck would still be working without "hardlock" cards like winterorb, stasis and what you would swap in instead of it? Thanks in advance

Hilarious. I want to play this. Is it a glass cannon, or can it play the long game?

What are your thoughts on Knight of the Reliquary? Have you ever tried it out and if yes, what was the conclusion?

Cheers

@DaZlInG hey hi, so for stuff like Food Chain, Elfball(Yisan, the Wanderer Bard), Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, and Tana, the Bloodsower/Tymna the Weaver blood pod;

These decks (creature combo) apart from blood pod are difficult decks for derevi to combat. This might require you to run a bit more counter magic and enchantment removal/hate to secure they can't win.

Najeela

Najeela is a bit hurt since we run so much creatures, which makes it difficult for the deck to do the Infinite combat trick early on, on us anyways. Also your pod should be fairly creature heavy with Elfball and Tana/Tymna (blood pod: this still might be the weakest link securing Najeela easy wins but w/e). working together on threat assessment early on is difficult being the only blue deck while Najeela has cheap counter magic too, bear that in mind. But in all greens there should be plenty of artifact/enchantment hate going on to do stuff with from all players. minor tweaks to stop certain strategies should do the trick here!

(EX; Think: How does Foodchain win + What stops them from winning on the spot or prevents them from winning = Probably a good card) (or in this case Swords to Plowshares najeela , Beast Within her etc...)

Foodchain

Foodchain is just dealt with by counters, tax or locked out of searching to deep, but elf-ball is one of the harder types to beat due to the fact they run under Stax effects pretty well... much like yisan, which can be a real challenge. I've lost plenty of games to Elfball/yisan/selvala type stuff,

But the simple thing about this is not allowing them to search Aven Mindcensor or early Linvala, Keeper of Silence type of effects really shut them down so try looking at these and try to stay away from things like Dream Tides for now. (Also threat assessment and early removal of commanders like these from the group is essential for not letting it get out of hand like leaving a Yisan open and letting him do whatever is a mistake; these decks don't do much without their commander)

@HumbelBumbel Hey hi, ; So basically yes it could work in any sort of meta, just tweak it towards your liking and towards your playgroups level of play. You can add all sorts of wonky combo stuff and cut out the taxing effects and locks for a battle-cruiser style of play and aim for long/late game! Thanks for the like as well!!! (If like you say your playgroup has agreed on not using orb effects for example you can just swap them out to more fun stuff!) Just check out the Sideboard deck or other versions from different sources and mix/match to your liking + see what works for you and what doesn't!

@0rc Hey hi, So what kind of deck is this really? it's not really glass cannon as in combo decks with no backup plan, neither is it the end all be all late game deck. It's more of a deck with layers and a game-plan in which others can't do what they want to be doing. Stax can go the late game for sure and take the game to a state where it is just frozen but by this time most folks scoop, and it can pop of early game as well and create wins out of thin air with unexpected hard locks. But all this is mostly planned way ahead of time as this deck tries to look a few turns ahead of what it wants to do and what could happen.

@Smooth8675309 hey hi, Thanks a lot xD enjoy the discord lots of great people, help, feedback, etc over there as well!!

@Dark_Danda Hey hi, So Knight of the Reliquary isn't really useful in this deck as opposed to its uses in modern and what not. There are way better land tutors out there if you need them like Crop Rotation and such if you require these type of effects.

Thoughts on Destiny Spinner? Basically makes sure that your creatures/enchantments resolve.

Kiyomei says... #8

@Enral not usually what we are looking for in the deck, but it might work if you are in all blue's, I mean if the entire meta you play in likes to overdose on cs'in you and trying to stop you why not.

How can Drannith Magistrate still be in the maybeboard?

This deck looks so outdated for the current meta... I don't think it's even cEDH viable.

0rc says... #10

abierto, as a seasoned Derevi pilot I can assure you that This decklist is still perfectly viable. I understand the author’s hesitation in adding Drannith Magistrate: 1) what could one possibly remove that doesn’t harm the combo engine? 2) why add more direct hate when the stax is already sufficiently crippling? I personally play the magistrate in my own very-current Derevi deck, but frankly, this decklist is far more competitive than mine is even without it. This decklist would crush. No disrespect—-just reason.

Kiyomei says... #11

I Simply haven't updated it, but have been using it since release... Doesn't make the deck instant outdated by not including a card from the maybe board though xD small pp comment, @abierto...

Derevi is also heavily Meta dependant so maybe try and look beyond a simple mindset like that ;)

magistrate is bonkers indeed though @0rc, what are you mainly using it for?

September 22, 2020 6:13 p.m.

0rc says... #12

Kiyomei, I use Drannith Magistrate to prevent my opponents from casting their commanders from the command zone, which is crippling in its own right, however, my strategy is far different from yours and less competitive so it may not be as appropriate for your stax strategy (my deck is on my profile). Late game, it also prevents commanders from casting spells from zones outside of the hand zone. As such, it stops Urza, Kess, and Muldrotha type strategies that hope to cast their win conditions from exile, graveyard, or wherever. It’s easy to pod into with Llanowar Elves-type dorks and completely shuts down many of the most competitive strategies, which tend to be commander driven. It also pods into Eternal Witness and Faeburrow Elder. It’s a real asshole in cEDH. I play it in Brago as well.

@0rc As you mentioned it does serious work versus decks that solely revolve around their commander, think Yisan, Selvala, Najeela, the ones you mentioned and many many more suffer from it's presence... All that while putting a big Target on it and eating plenty of removal giving you more time and freedom to do other things...

Invalidating Flash-Hulk and Doomsday style combo's with such low mana cost is also really valuable and the threat of ChordOC or yisan spewing it out at instant speed is a niche counter trick too ^^.

As you said it's accessibility in this deck is super easily achieved with all the creature tutors like pod and such!!! Making this card a very good addition to the deck regardless of Meta... I'll update the list sooner or later... Busy with other things RN and haven't got time to keep the list up to date as I test a lot online now ^^...

Kiyomei, I’m glad you like the card. It’s a workhorse. Note that I was merely defending your deck’s lack of inclusion. Your taxation plan is generally disruptive to all spells played by opponents irregardless of their zone of origin.

Yes, I agree that it may disrupt flashback spells that often enable Breakfast Hulk and Doomsday style combos.

All respect to the #1 Derevi deck.

Kiyomei, you also may way look into into the validity of using the Magistrate as a counter via CoC or Yisan, as you’ve described. It may be that because the opponents cast spell is already on the stack, it’s already cast and can’t be thwarted in such a way. The same issue arose often when Teferi Mage of Zhalfir was first introduced (albeit the language on his card is different). I hope this helps.

I know, you just need to time it right whenever you get priority ofc and before certain points in the specific combo where you can be the most disruptive and still stop them with it...

Updated it finally to my current Version that I own and Ordered me a Archon of Emeria!!!

  • I'm probably going to take Loyal Retainers out for Archon of Emeria once it arrives, Since I've been going less and less for retainers during "yisan" anyway and since I'm not on the "Jin-retainer" anymore I feel like it's time for him to retire for a while... Especially with the power the new Archon brings!!!

  • As for Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy I'm not so sure yet. You can always let me know if you find something exciting! (I mean it can be explosive but I'm just not 100% sure if it's worth it due to lack of testing on my part)

(PS: I went to check that dead website Moxsomething and holy moley, I knew it was going to die from the start but I didn't expect it to be so badly designed compared to this and completely deserted xD)

Hi, in love with the deck. I've been a Derevi player since day 1 and this by far is the best and neat deck I've ever seen.

Just one thing I want to ask, have you considered some cards from the recent set Commander Legends?

Interesting finds : Kaldheim : and maybe usable to an extent?

(The new art border is not too shabby on some of these cards but nothing really "wow" factor to me...)

Been way to inactive due to reasons... Playtesting has been limited to online sites/cam games :'(

@ RIN90

Sorry for the late reply...
