Death & Taxes is well known deck in modern. It is a pretty aggresive deck, but you still have to think about what your are going to do. This gives it a pretty clear distinction from the more typical aggro decks like mono red. With MH2 some new possibilities for the deck have arrived.

Lets run down the cards of the deck and their function.

Creatures:

  • Giver of Runes protects all our key-cards. When we have two in play they can even protect eachother which can really put a lock on our oponents cards.
  • Leonin Arbiter makes life difficult in a format where fetchlands are heavily used. With the right timing it also allows us to really screw our oponent by destroying their lands and denying them to replace it.
  • Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is great at slowing our oponents down, where they planning to cast a certain spell? Well now they have to wait an extra turn. Firststrike is also pretty neat versus other aggro decks that run small creatures.
  • Charming Prince is a versatile card. Being able to flicker our Skyclave Apparition can be really strong and when we are out of gas it can make sure we dont draw lands by scrying them to the bottom.
  • Stoneforge Mystic can be a real spirit smasher. Tutoring a Batterskull and putting it on the battlefield on turn three, instead of turn five can win you the game pretty easily.
  • Skyclave Apparition is really good at being annoying, especially the fact that it can hit anything, except for lands ofcourse, makes it a powerhouse.
  • Solitude can be a much needed card in the modern format seeing that it is a creature heavy format. If your oponent is about to go off with a certain combo, this card makes sure that that doesn't happen.

Spells:

Artifacts:

  • Aether Vial is ofcourse the backbone of this deck. It lets us play creatures for free at instant speed while circumventing counterspells since we are not casting anything. We are simply putting creatures on the battlefield. This card is probably what makes this deck hard to play, you really have to think about when to use your vial. For example, you could use it to just put a Charming Prince on the battlefield without paying its cost or you could use your Vial to "flash" in your Charming Prince when another creature is being threatened and use its flicker ability to save your creature.
  • Batterskull just a mean card that can be tutored with Stoneforge Mystic to be cheated into play.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice gives a creature protection agianst red and blue, this makes alot harder to get rid of the equiped creature. Also the carddraw is pretty great seeing we have litterly no way of drawing cards.

Lands:

Normally lands are pretty straight forward, but not in this deck. You really have to time your landdestruction right with your Leonin Arbiter in order to get maximum efficiency and screw your oponent.

Maybeboard:

  • Mana Tithe could be pretty good in the right matchup, its also a big suprise to be countered by a mono-white deck.
