VaeVictisMTGI agree, this deck would greatly benefit from more and better tutors and additional board wipes, and I will add them to this decklist as soon as I get ahold of them myself. As for the amount of combos, the idea is that it makes them somewhat disposable, which means you can do stupid things like Counterspell + Isochron Scepter to smooth out, of course it would be more reasonable to play cards like Propaganda that better ensures your survivability, but I've found it more entertaining trying to come up with new interactions outside of the combos. In addidtion, I find this kind of deck way more entertaining to play than the usual combo deck.

I'll update the description and description to better reflect both the purpose and optimal build of the deck, thanks for the feedback!

I enjoy playing both Voltron and Defensive decks and sometimes the beat down or swing wide. Not a huge fan of Stax/Control but I do not knock anyone for playing them and I do not mind playing against them (just not all of the time)Also not a big fan of Infect and Land Destruction but all other forms of control/tax/stax is the name of the game.

Padeem really hits my defense and potential offense too. I would say i have an Affinity to artifacts like many of the spells in Magic.

Constructive Criticism and suggestions please. (Trying to keep it fairly Budget)

Some of my thoughts and strategy to not poke the hornets nest with this deck and reveal its win cons.

Protection:

  1. Caltrops + Mechanized Production can win you game and even if they stop it for each one you get out the better
  2. Darksteel Forge
  3. Darksteel Plate
  4. Counterspell + Isochron Scepter or any of the 2cmc or less instances
  5. Counterspell + Elite Arcanist or any instant card you may want to imprint
  6. Lightning Greaves for any creature protection
  7. Liquimetal Coating spot protection for non artifacts
  8. Orbs of Warding servers both as hexproof for you and 1 less damage from a horde of 1/1 tokens
  9. Predator, Flagship is meant to be spot removal and a deterrent and even possibly an evasion to land creatures you or your opponents control to ensure the game is not over to quick until you get setup (small hug possible)
  10. Shield of Kaldra not as good as the Darksteel Plate but in padeem's hands it is still untargetable for destruction
  11. Thunderstaff nice to have another 1 damage absorb for all things token swinging wide and can even stop 2/2 size tokens with Orbs of Warding
  12. Torpor Orb great for just general mayham (warning will put a target on you so don't throw it out right away until some defense built up
  13. Witchbane Orb also gives you hexproof and removes those pesky curse's that some like to play
  14. Ring of Evos Isle is a very good tool for +1/+1 counters on blue creatures and can protect any creature with a popup untargettable
  15. Silverskin Armor makes padeem or other creature into an artifact
  16. Colossus of Akros can't beat a defender that can go from defense to offense
  17. Dissipation Field This one is iffy, i like the idea of returning tokens to nothingness but it could be abused by opponents to bounce ETB's
  18. Endbringer Swiss army knife of defense
  19. Clockspinning + Glacial Chasm equals no damage dealt to you and you only lose 2 life during each upkeep so with some recurring life gain you can sustain a healthy deterrent to attacks.
  20. Propaganda costs 2 to attack you
  21. Silent Arbiter only one creature can attack (can be good and bad with only one defender as well with trample)
  22. Scarecrow is our only good defense against hordes of flying tokens or single flying creatures
  23. Stormtide Leviathan can tie up the ground combat a bit
  24. War Tax can stop a horde of tokens with minimal issue and can make it very difficult an opponent to send a big creature
  25. Web of Inertia This one is also iffy like the dissipation field in that most people do not care about graveyard recursion but it might still be viable against a deck that does not want to get rid of anything important in graveyard or has nothing in graveyard to remove

Win Cons:

  1. Darksteel Forge + Platinum Angel and enough mana open to make people think you can counter any exile all creatures or exile all artifacts.
  2. And if you want to seal the deal you can have Counterspell + Isochron Scepter + Paradox Engine + Sol Ring infinite loop of cancels at your disposal

So that is my attempt at hunker down and make it costly to attack me if at all possible until i can put in that unbreakable combo.

Thinking about:1. Prototype Portal to make an insane amount of Caltrops or Colossus of Akros
