Hoarding Broodlord

Creature — Dragon

Convoke (You may tap your creatures as you cast this spell. Each creature you tap while casting this spell pays for or one mana of that creature's colour.)

Flying

When Hoarding Broodlord enters the battlefield, search your library for a card, exile it face down, then shuffle your library. For as long as that card remains exiled, you may play it.

Spells you cast from exile have convoke.

Azoth2099 on [KCKB] Kaalia Casual & Kind of Budget

Keeping budget in mind, here are some cheap recs for increased consistency:

Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff, Monologue Tax, Dark Tutelage, Archivist of Oghma, Deep Gnome Terramancer, Hoarding Broodlord, Hellkite Tyrant, Diabolic Intent, Diabolic Tutor, Gamble, & Insidious Dreams.

I have more, but I'll stop here unless you want me to keep going lol.

Hey dude! Good Commander choice, Kaalia of the Vast has been my main option for years now.

I'll try to keep this brief lol.

The most important thing to remember when brewing this one is to not get distracted by the possibilities of all those Angels, Demons & Dragons. Focus on card quality above all else, the Spells that are going to win you the game.

Razaketh, the Foulblooded & Vilis, Broker of Blood are the top dogs here, their power as individual cards will oftentimes win you game from sheer value. Other pieces like Rune-Scarred Demon, Burning-Rune Demon & Hoarding Broodlord will do the same if you build around them with Spells like Ephemerate & Saw in Half.

I'd also recommend more Treasure tokens! I see you're already running Smothering Tithe & Goldspan Dragon, which is a great start. Adding Ancient Copper Dragon, Cavern-Hoard Dragon, Monologue Tax, Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff & of course Dockside Extortionist will make sure that your deck doesn't necessarily need it's Commander on the field to function. There are also a few lines via Dockside Extortionist & Razaketh, the Foulblooded that deal infinite damage, produce infinite Mana and yield infinite Tutors, which we can get into later if you decide to go that route.

Wrapping up on Mana, I'd also recommend more Rituals and Rocks. Dark Ritual, Burnt Offering & Seething Song are great, as are Talisman of Hierarchy, Talisman of Conviction & Talisman of Indulgence. A Thran Dynamo could be good too. Oh man, Hellkite Tyrant can steal your opponents Rocks, which counts as Ramp I guess?

Anyway, moving on to card draw! Kaalia of the Vast runs through a lot of cards if you build her right, and keeping your hand full is a priority. Necropotence, Black Market Connections, Dark Tutelage, & Dark Confidant are great ways to turn your Life total into more gas. Esper Sentinel & Archivist of Oghma scale with your opponent's activity. None of them will do as much heavy lifting as Vilis, Broker of Blood, but that's honestly asking a lot of any card other than Ad Nauseam.

Onto the deck engine! I see you're running a few things to double down on your Commander's effect, like Aggravated Assault, Blade of Selves & Isshin, Two Heavens as One. While this strategy seems like a great idea on paper, it's actually not as efficient for the deck as it seems. Running a Reanimator strategy to ensure that the deck can continue to cheat creatures out without having to rely on it's Commander to do so is a far more powerful & consistent strategy. Spells like Entomb, Reanimate, Final Parting, Buried Alive, Victimize, Animate Dead, & Karmic Guide will pull a lot of weight in this context.

I could talk about Kaalia of the Vast all day, but I'll stop here. Let me know how you feel about these suggestions.

Also, here's my own list if you want to check it out: ANCIENT DRAGON TEMPEST (KAALIA)

Cheers!

Have you considered Hoarding Broodlord + Saw in Half + Peer into the Abyss here? Here are the steps if you don't know what I'm talking about:

Step 1: Get Hoarding Broodlord onto the field somehow, I prefer Reanimate

Step 2: Tutor Saw in Half out of your library and cast it convoking with Hoarding Broodlord

Step 3: Tutor Peer into the Abyss & Burnt Offering with your 2 new tokens

Step 4: Cast Burnt Offering targeting one of the copies of Hoarding Broodlord for 8 mana (the copies retain the mana value of the original in this context)

Step 5: Cast Peer into the Abyss targeting whoever you want to nuke!

Nice Kaalia of the Vast list! Loving some of these picks, like Rune-Scarred Demon, Burning-Rune Demon, Vilis, Broker of Blood, Hoarding Broodlord & Ancient Copper Dragon.

I've found that a mix of Reanimator and Stax is the best way to not only keep the deck from being overtaken, but to also increase it's resiliency & reduce it's reliance on it's Commander cheating Creatures into play to get the wheels spinning, as the deck itself cheats them into play intrinsically with the Commander's effect adding extra spice for a very focused yet multipronged strategy. Far more powerful & consistent than doubling up on triggers as a deck philosophy imo.

Underworld Breach, Entomb, Buried Alive, Unmarked Grave, Persist, Reanimate, & Final Parting are all crazy good in this context. Certain key Stax pieces like Opposition Agent, Dauthi Voidwalker, Drannith Magistrate & Grand Abolisher will stop whatever your opponents are trying to do while you advance.

Razaketh, the Foulblooded is way too good not to include in the list, though. It's synergy with Dockside Extortionist can straight up win you the game immediately if you have enough life to pay for combo assembly in this theoretical Reanimator build. I'd also recommend Ancient Gold Dragon, as it gives you insane board pressure in addition to nuking everyone in conjunction with Dragon Tempest. Sneak Attack is also empowered in this Reanimator approach, especially with the emphasis on ETBs.

I think the deck needs a bit more card draw & Tutors, though, especially for the budget. Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor & Gamble just got reprinted, so they're decently cheap right now. Scroll Rack, Sensei's Divining Top, Esper Sentinel, Archivist of Oghma, Dark Confidant, Dark Tutelage & of course Necropotence are worth consideration. Tectonic Reformation could also be very powerful here considering how many lands you're running. Cards like Valakut Awakening  Flip & Into the Fire can be deceptively powerful with other utility outside of just drawing cards.

Lastly, I'd recommend both Mother of Runes & Giver of Runes. Excellent protection.

Azoth2099 I can totally understand the flavor reasons for wanting to use certain combos over others!

I decided to cut Burning-Rune Demon because I just couldn't figure out a recursion method to get back whatever my opponent binned. It never felt like I could make an optimal choice of two cards that made my opponent's choice irrelevant.

I guess with the printing of Hoarding Broodlord you can make the opponent choose between Broodlord or Rune-Scarred Demon... but I'm just not sure on it is all!

TheRevelator Definitely liking the lines off of Rune-Scarred Demon and Hoarding Broodlord, classic Kaalia vibes. I think I was running Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame in my 1st iteration of the deck but ended up cutting it in favor of more flavor. Not necessarily the best choice as they're both just great cards on their own, especially Twinflame in this context, but there have been enough cards printed for Kaalia since then to where she hasn't lost much speed from the cut.

I saw that you're running Saw in Half in your build, and it seems like a banger. If I can manage to find space for the Recruiters again, I don't think I'll have a legitimate excuse to not run it myself.

Also, how do you feel about Burning-Rune Demon? I've seen a fair amount of Kaalia players cut it nonchalantly, but I've found that it basically acts as a pseudo Intuition depending on what you Tutor up with it, which is a big deal imo.

Azoth2099 thanks for explaining the combo haha

Sure it's convoluted, but if it's the line/combo you like to go for then it's great!

I typically prefer "one card win conditions" like Rune-Scarred Demon/Hoarding Broodlord to tutor up Ephemerate to flicker and then go find either Buried Alive (entombing Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Restoration Angel, & Karmic Guide) + Reanimate or to just get Twinflame + Dualcaster Mage

While it doesn't win on the same turn, it allows you to try and hold up any sort of disruption like Pyroblast to combo off on your next turn!

TheRevelator Yeah, I ended up finding space for Hoarding Broodlord and Restoration Angel by cutting Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard for better flavor and synergy! Easy choice once I realized, although I would love to find room for the recruiters in the future.

Ashnod's Altar and Disciple of the Vault are both part of one of this deck's Razaketh lines in addition to their other utility, but I admittedly would not be running them otherwise. The steps are as follows:

  1. Cheat Razaketh into play via Kaalia

  2. Sac Kaalia to Tutor for Dockside

  3. Sack Dockside to Tutor for Reanimate (or Animate Dead/Necromancy)

  4. Reanimate + Sac Dockside to Tutor for Corpse Dance

  5. Corpse Dance + Sac Dockside twice to Tutor for Altar and Disciple

  6. Loop it up!

Or you can just go with the Razakats strat if the aforementioned plan goes to pot.

Heavily considering Shadow-Rite Priest as another cheap piece that can activate the winning lines by sacrificing Kaalia and taking her place in the 1st step, but it's lack of Haste is a real downside.

Pretty convoluted, I know lol
