Hopes for Journey into Nyx

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

I want to know what everyone wants to see in JOU.

For me, I want to see a new G/W Ajani (almost guaranteed there will be an Ajani, I just want it to be G/W).

Also, a mono white permanent that gives your creatures hexproof or indestructible (preferably early game). I want it to be mono white because then it helps G/W Heroic/Auras, BW Heroic/Auras, R/W Heroic/Auras, and U/W Heroic/Auras. Because I feel that lack of creature protection is the only reason Heroic isn't tier 1.

What do you guys want to see?

I really hope for more R/W love, it has been my favorite color set ever since i re-started magic, and i would love to get some good cards for it

showda Yea, I would love to see Iroas (R/W God) to be playable. Just not another Karametra, God of Harvests .

I'm looking forward to the izzet Scry lands so I can replace my guildgates with them. Also hoping for something that interacts well with Izzet Staticaster / the graveyard (like Snapcaster Mage ).

I'm hoping for some good B/G stuff, or maybe even some B/G/R cards. It would be awesome if Jund became a thing in standard.

I think it would also be cool if they released another rare utility land like they did in Theros with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx .

Also, a set ability that doesn't suck. Inspired and Tribute were about as bad as they could have made it. I guess they can't come up with anymore ideas?

And I'm probably in the minority here, but I have an all FOIL Minotaur deck and I've been waiting for that 1 drop Minotaur. Just to make my curve complete.

Hopefully Journey into Nyx will deliver.

March 1, 2014 8:37 p.m.

showda says... #6

Tribute could have been better if the answer wasn't obvious most of the time. There's really only one or two cards with tributes where it isn't an instant choice.

I'm really keen on seeing what Pharika will be like, i think i could get away with playing it in my deck right now if it was boss, maybe with a little alteration.

I'd also like to see a really aggressive 4 drop for red, seeing as how people hate the new phoenix. RDW needs it.

I would pay good money for Iroas to be playable. If I had to shoot for a pipedream idea of what he would be like I would hope for something kinda like this:

In terms of what will likely happen it will probably be something kinda like this, which I would be less excited for.

Still, one can dream, eh?

Hey, I run a Karametra, God of Harvests EDH deck and she's awesome! (Karametra, Land Lubber) But yeah...in standard not so much.

March 1, 2014 10:41 p.m.

showda says... #14

cschiller I sure as hell hope not. R/W has been about small quick creatures for as long as i can remember, and a burn status would go horrible with her.

I'm currently running a golgari midrange deck, it's got tons of power and tons of answers and has been tearing things up. I'm looking forward to the B/G scryland to replace my guildgates and I'm hoping that the B/G god fits into my deck. I could see it going in a couple of directions with either some kind of gorgon theme deathtouch situation, similar to all of the black and green gorgons we have seen already. Or it could have something to do with the typical golgari graveyard shenanigans because they have still tried to keep that element of that color pair alive in the new sets. I'm not sure which would be best for my deck because it will ultimately depend on what the card actually does and cost so I'm just hoping it's something useful and worth fitting in.

March 1, 2014 11:51 p.m.

Matsi883 says... #16

Dritz: The cost on the dream one should be 1RW. Also, a revised template should be: "Put a 2/1 red and white Soldier creature token with converted mana cost RW on to the battlefield.

(If you even care)

March 2, 2014 8:56 a.m.

Dritz says... #17

@Matsi883

I definitely appreciate the critiques, although part of the reason that I made it cost 2 was because in most of my decks the 3 drop slot is where most of my best playables are (especially if I'm playing Boros over Naya or other such things). I mean, I get kinda bogged down in choices across several colors potentially in the three slot but I have much less consistent potency off of the two drop slot I feel and I wish there were a Boros card to take up that sort of mantle. (I mean, I love Legion's Initiative but it just has trouble working with anything competitive due to the general lack of good on-curve creatures that fulfill its preferred condition without being shoehorned in. haha)

Anyway, I do realize that I more than likely made it considerably more pushed than they would risk, after all, it is just a pipedream. haha, Also, thanks for the phrasing suggestion.

Ajani GW2

+2- Tap target Creature, and then untap another target creature

-3- Creatures you control get +3/+3 and first strike until end of turn

-8- You get and emblem that says "Your Devotion to White and Green is never lower than 10"

4 Loyalty

Tried to work in a way for him to combo with Brimaz, King of Oreskos , the Inspired mechanic, and to make devotion easy with his ultimate.

March 2, 2014 1:33 p.m.

UpsetYoMama says... #19

Interesting, DarkHero. I'm thinking that maybe something with devotion would be cool, but maybe rework it so that it's more usable as his second ability.

+2 - Tap target creature and then untap another target creature.

-3 - Until the end of turn your next turn, Green and White permanents you control provide twice the amount of [G mana symbol] or [W mana symbol] towards your Devotion to Green and White.

-8 - Until end of game, you get an emblem with, "Creatures you control get +3/+3, first strike, and trample."

What do you think? I'm sure there is a less wordy way of stating the second ability, but you get the point.

March 2, 2014 1:53 p.m.

tman007 says... #20

DarkHero One way you could word that is, "You get an emblem that has mana cost GGGGGWWWWW.". That way major Gods and Karametra can both be permanently turned on, and it helps mono colored devotion like Evangel of Heliod .

March 2, 2014 1:59 p.m.

DarkHero says... #21

yeah that was the idea. Makes it so anything involving green devotion or red devotion is automatically strong or wakened in the sense of the Gods.

March 2, 2014 2:03 p.m.

DarkHero says... #22

UpsetYoMama I really like the idea of making the ultimate emblem a devotion themed win. The best way to explain it would be imagine if it were Blue devotion for Master of Waves or Black devotion for Gary. I think that would be an amazing and fun ultimate to work towards. You always hope that the ultimate basically wins you the game, and that would make it so every devotion card in your deck is now far more powerful for the rest of the game no matter hat happens. Karametra's Acolyte tons of mana, Evangel of Heliod for soldiers, all gods awakened, think of the ramp...

March 2, 2014 2:09 p.m.

raithe000 says... #23

@UpsetYoMama Emblems naturally last the rest of the game, you don't have to include it in the text.

An emblem with a mana cost wouldn't work, since Devotion only checks mana costs on the field and emblems exist in the command zone.

Because Rakdos control should be more of a thing.

Tithe of the Slaughter - 2RW

Sorcery

As an additional cost to cast Tithe of the Slaughter, pay 3 life and sacrifice a creature. Each opponent sacrifices all creatures he or she controls.

March 2, 2014 2:25 p.m.

Spootyone says... #25

I'm assuming you meant 2RB. If that were to be printed I bet it'd be an EDH staple.

March 2, 2014 2:27 p.m.

I want to see Threshold make a comeback in the new set. Something like:

Victory's Cost

2RW, Instant

As an additional cost to cast Victory's Cost, sacrifice a creature.

Each opponent sacrifices a creature. You gain life equal to the total power of the creatures sacrificed.

Threshold - Instead, you gain life equal to those creatures' power plus their toughness.

Rhinowarrior says... #27

The only problem i have with that new ajani idea is that once devotion is needed for about 10 cards that are white and green. seems like kind of a waste to see a planeswalker that only appeals to a couple of cards. Instead of devotion, maybe the ultimate or secondary could be a token builder. That way it seems to fit with brimaz, another cat token creator, it fits with previous ajani incarnations, and it also fits the white and green theme that we have come to recognize.

I'm hoping for some sort of enchantment Phyrexian Metamorph . An enchantment creature that can copy any enchantment and/or creature but is still an enchantment.

MrPhyntch says... #29

Full-art lands. We were sorta supposed to get them with Theros, but Wizards decided to just do regular lands instead. So it would be awesome to do some nice sparkly ethereal lands with full-art images to go with the Nyx theme.

And before you say "but they never release two lands in one block" ask Zendikar, the last block to do Full-Art lands. It had Full-Art for Zendikar and regular ones for Rise.

Consider improve the +2 ability with:

+2 - Tap target creature and then untap another target creature. If your own target creature have heroic, this ability will trigger it.

JWiley129 says... #31

I just want to leave my 2-cents on the Ajani card designs. If you look at past PW designs, you'll notice that they hardly mention any of the block mechanics of the set they are in. This also hurts future use for the PW in other formats. While WotC is designing PWs to fit in a specific type of deck instead of "If you're playing X you should put Y in as a 4-of", that doesn't mean pigeonholing the PW into set mechanics. I think that a GW Ajani will probably have some lifegain and token theme and will not reference any set mechanics in Theros block.

I personally am sick of black and hope they don't print more toys for black (between Thoughtseize , Hero's Downfall , Bile Blight , and Gary, I think they've got enough). Personally hoping for more things with "Protection from Black" in its text. I'm also hoping for something to make G/B stronger, and something that isn't a dredge card (though I do like the dredge that's been printed). I also hope for something strong for MUD or especially U/w devotion. Blue devotion decks honestly use horrible cards and tie them together with Master of Waves and Thassa, God of the Sea , so having some legitimate creatures would be nice.

In an ideal world for me:

-(Insert Name Here) UUU

Protection from Black

3/3

-(Insert Name Here) UUU

U- Exile (Insert Name Here). Return it to the battlefield at the next end step.

I also hope they print a card like this:

Hero of Karametra WG

Heroic- Whenever you cast a spell that targets Hero of Karametra, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

I wonder why everybody thinks Ajani is bound to be GW. I'm no lore expert so please enlighten me. Also as UpsetYoMama did wish, I'd like that one-drop minotaur. Maybe Journey into nyx will have a split mana theme, and it will be the follow up to Rakdos Crackler. Also I'm really excited for Kruphix and how much he'll differ from Kiora mechanically, and I just wanna see Keranos be very powerful in burn decks.

March 24, 2014 7:25 p.m.

Gienah says... #36

I think having a God's or Ajani's abilities giving devotion would be a pretty bad idea (think Kamigawa). It makes them ONLY playable in standard, I could not care less about my devotion in EDH, even if I run a god, I just want it on the field. In EDH, a God like Karametra, God of Harvests isn't on the field to be a creature. Same goes with the rest of them.

Ajani's abilites giving devotion or being affected by devotion is poor design for a planeswalker that is not originally from Theros. Like I said above, he'd only be playable in standard. It's a stale design that would only see play until Theros rotates out, then he would rarely see play only in the decks that are designed around the devotion mechanic. Which is only Karametra decks if he's GW.

Also, derKochXXL, I think Ajani is from Naya which is RWG, and we have a white and a RW Ajani, so why not?

Charging Badger , God of the Pantheon

Mana Cost: WUBRG

Legendary Enchantment Creature - Badger God

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to all colors is less than ten, Charging Badger isn't a creature.

Creatures you control have "T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay X. If you do, put X 4/4 White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green Chromanticore tokens with Flying, First Strike, Vigilance, Trample, and Lifelink onto the battlefield, then destroy all creatures named Sedge Scorpion .

The Mighty Christian God (10W)

Legendary Enchantment Creature - God

If your devotion to white is less than 10, the mighty christian god is not a creature.

If the mighty christian god is a creature, during your upkeep you may declare the second coming and win the game,

We need some kind of "utility land". I miss the days of seeing Kessig Wolf Run , Nephalia Drownyard , Vault of the Archangel , Gavony Township , etc seeing play as this added more depth.

Right now it's all whoever can stick the most creatures and tap 'em sideways wins. Midrange has taken a hit due to the scry lands coming into play tapped and no "utility" lands. It's all devotion/aggro/control right now

March 27, 2014 11:18 a.m.

Gienah says... #41

I don't play standard very often, but I do go to FNM every now and then, so I may be wrong here. I've been seeing the go to utility land is Mutavault . I've been seeing that for decks running 2 colors and under, Mutavault wins games. Almost all decks I've seen, except RG monsters, runs 4 Mutavaults.

My meta being mostly RG Monsters, UW control, Mono-black, and some Esper.

A new utility land would be amazing to see. Seeing a turn 1 Mutavault gets stale very quickly.

March 27, 2014 11:46 a.m.

Gienah have you seen the forum comment being circulated amongst gaming groups? it's one forum user's ardent plea as for why Mutavault needs to be banned in Standard. it's rather funny.

I really really really hope Izzet becomes some punching material. It's sad to see the arguably most powerful color-combination of modern these days to perform this poor in standard right now.

I hope that the format loses some clunkiness and gains some power level. 2 of the 3 best decks in the format right now use over 80% RTR cards. This sucks! The amount of playables from THS and BNG is laughable and if M15 and Huey don't deliver we'll see a standard format, that'll look like limited most of the times :(

I think that it needs more counterspells, and more things that I can use to clone Biovisionary s with. Also they need full art cards, and probably should have something that would be useful in modern like 0 drop mana producing artifacts.

How about things that allow you to fetch/shuffle? There were plenty of these back in RTR-INN Standard, but nothing now. If I scry something off the top that is a win con (for Esper control - my 1 of AEtherling ) and I can't cast him for a few turns, of COURSE I'm going to ship it. We should be able to have shuffle effects so that we aren't forced to "draw our libraries" in order to find it again
