Okay, so we all know about the Sword cycle from Mirrodin, yes? Sword of Fire and Ice, Sword of Body and Mind, Sword of Feast and Famine, Sword of Light and Shadow, and Sword of War and Peace. Now, these are in enemy colors. I was wanting to ask you guys, the tappedout community: what are some of your ideas for ALLY color Swords? Reminder: Ally colors are , , , , and .

AwezomePozzum says... #2

You did B/U twice, but you forgot W/U.

I'm blank, but also, FIRST.

2austin5 says... #3

For UB:

Sword of Plague and Knowledge 1UB

Equip Creature gets +2/+2 and is protection from UB.

Whenever equip creature deals combat damage, destroy target nonblack creature and scry 2.

January 29, 2017 3:56 p.m.

Kiortio says... #4

For G/W:

Sword of Peace and Tranquility (3 generic)

Equip: 3

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from G/w

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you gain 5 life and up to one target creature you control gains +2/+2 and trample until the end of your next turn.

What else could the white effect be? Exiling something seems a bit too busted.

AwezomePozzum thanks for catching that.

AiryNeon says... #6

Kiortio maybe destroying an artifact or enchantment.

January 29, 2017 4:16 p.m.

AiryNeon says... #7

I was thinking that for U/B it could be:

Sword of Wisdom and Power

Equip 2

Protection from Blue and Black

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature or planeswalker and you scry 2.

January 29, 2017 4:22 p.m.

AiryNeon says... #8

Oops. Forgot the +2/+2 effect there.

January 29, 2017 4:23 p.m.

AiryNeon says... #9

And for R/G:

Sword of Fury and Fertility

Equip 2

Equipped creature has +2/+2 and protection from green and red

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy target artifact or land that player controls. You may search your library for up to two land cards and put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library.

January 29, 2017 4:26 p.m.

AiryNeon says... #10

On an unrelated topic, does anyone actually have any of these cards? I have the masterpiece Sword of Body and Mind.

January 29, 2017 4:27 p.m.

Guftders says... #11

For W/U:

Sword of Sun and Sky

Equipped creature gets +2/+2, and gains protections from White and Blue.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may exile a nonland permanent you control, until the end phase, also you may tap target creature. It does not untap during the next untap step.

January 29, 2017 4:30 p.m.

Guftders says... #12

For :

Sword of Truth and Lie

Equipped creature gets +2/+2, and gains protection from Blue and Black.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may return target creature to it's owners hand, and you may also have target opponent sacrifice a non token creature.

January 29, 2017 4:33 p.m.

Guftders says... #13

And for :

Sword of Pain and Suffering

Equipped creature gets +2/+2, and gains protection from Black and Red.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may have each other creature lose -2/-2, then you may deal 2 damage to each other creature.

Eiti3 says... #14

Reading these is making me face palm...

Prerequisites:

  • Mana Cost - No colors
  • Sword of (Name Matching One Color) and (Name Matching Other Color, but is also the antonym or philosophically opposite of the first Color). Or are you all naming them similarly because they're "ally"?
  • +2/+2 and protection from said colors
  • Once equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, trigger happens. Trigger takes either color and it does something to usually that same player, but can also be to a creature. The second effect takes the other color and it benefits you somehow. The only exception to this rule is Sword of Light and Shadow
  • Equip cost:
  • Be somewhat balanced for the colorless CMC, +2/+2 buff, protection from 2 colors, equip cost and the prerequisite trigger. I know this is hard for some of you. Only exception to this rule is Sword of Feast and Famine

    2austin5 says... #15

Eiti3- I think for the mana cost of three, a new sword cycle could have colors. It makes it more restrictive if they are more powerful, but I agree just three of any is canonical. Also, for the most part (because I know its what I did) most users are just shorting the text and assuming people know that its combat damage to a player. I agree with your point that some of these are very OP for the other benefits though

    January 29, 2017 5:05 p.m.

    Kiortio says... #16

Oops, I forgot that the sword equip is 2 and not three. I at least tried to make mine somewhat balanced and have a little flair, with the green ability.

    Izu_Korasu says... #17

i could see the ally swords being powered down considerably. Wizards has almost completely printing cards with protection, and instead printing cards that are more interactive like Godsend or Slayer's Plate and possibly have power limiting restrictions.

    ex:

    Sword of Order and Contemplation

    Equipped creature gains +2/+2

If equipped creature is legendary, it gains flying and lifelink.

When equipped creature does combat damage to a player, scry 1 then gain life equal to the number of untapped creatures you control.

    Equip

    January 29, 2017 5:13 p.m. Edited.

    snotice says... #18

Izu_Korasu: I could see something like that being printed.

    January 29, 2017 5:23 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #19

Well yeah, but like Eiti3 mentioned they all have a pattern, excepting Sword of Light and Shadow. I was thinking for if Wizards had decided to print these in the old Mirrodin cycle.

    January 29, 2017 5:36 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #20

    Ex.

    Sword of Arms and Caution

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and protection from white and blue

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, create 2 1/1 white solder tokens and you may return a creature that player controls to its owners hand.

    Equip

also odds are that because the enemy swords used the "x and y" model to highlight the dichotomy, the ally swords would highlight their unity with a "x y" model. Ex. Sword of Righteous Caution

    January 29, 2017 8:17 p.m.

    Schuesseled says... #21

    Sword of Peace and Tranquility

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and protection from white and blue

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player create a 1/1 white soldier creature token and a 1/1 blue wizard creature token. Then gain life equal to the number of white creatures you control and draw cards equal to the number of blue creatures you control.

    Equip

    January 29, 2017 8:49 p.m. Edited.

    Gleeock says... #22

I like the idea of Ally swords being a more cohesive theme instead of opposite

    Maybe a Selesnya sword:

    Sword of Growth & Progress:

    +2/+2 & Pro White/Green

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage -- Populate & Bolster 2

    January 29, 2017 10:15 p.m.

    Gleeock says... #23

Or if the above is not self-reliant enough the create a 1/1 soldier token + Populate...

    January 29, 2017 10:24 p.m.

    CheeseBro says... #24

    Sword of Slash and Burn

    +2/+2 pro RG

When deals combat damage, search library for a basics land and put onto battlefield tapped and deal 3 damage to target creature or player.

    equip 2

    January 29, 2017 11:09 p.m.

    Mortem says... #25

    W/U Sword:

Sword of Sun and Moon (3)

    Artifact- Equipment

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from white and blue.

Whenever equipped creature deals damage to a player, you may return target creature to it's owners hand, then put two 1/1 colorless spirit creature tokens onto the battlefield.

    January 30, 2017 10:19 a.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #26

Mortem aside from the confusing colorless spirits, it's almost identical to mine (why colorless spirits over soldiers, warriors or flying white spirits?)

Also since has enough iterations, now time for another color

    Ex

    Sword of Past and Future.

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and protection from black and blue

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, target creature that player controls gets -3/-3 and scry 2

    Equip

    January 30, 2017 11:51 a.m. Edited.

    Mortem says... #27

    Izu_Korasu

I chose colorless spirits because soldiers are boring, and almost all of the white spirit in the game have flying. Giving them flying makes the effect almost strictly better thn that of Sword of Body and Mind. Plus, colorless spirits are a Kamigawa thing, and they look cool. XD

Also, I didn't read any replies before posting my sword. You're right, they are basically the same thing XD.

We haven't had many entries for . I'll do my best to think of one, but I'm in school right now. ;)

    Daedalus19876 says... #29

God, I hope they eventually print the Ally Swords. Avacyn is hungry.

    January 31, 2017 6:37 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #30

I kinda like the sword of pain and suffering that Guftders made but ill give it a shot

    ex.

    Sword of Fire and Brimstone

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and protection from red and black.

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature then add to your mana pool.

    Equip

    January 31, 2017 7:43 p.m.

    Daedalus19876 says... #31

Izu_Korasu: You'd need to have some kind of provision making sure it won't fizzle when you leave combat...

    January 31, 2017 7:45 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #32

    How about this:

    Sword of Pain and Gain

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and protection from red and black

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may have Sword of Pain and Gain deal 3 damage to target creature or player, then you may draw two cards and lose 2 life.

    Equip

    January 31, 2017 9:52 p.m.

    snotice says... #33

    AiryNeon: overpowered

    January 31, 2017 9:55 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #34

snotice that may be true, but take a look at the original swords. This one is no more overpowered than those. It's simply a combo of Lightning Bolt and Night's Whisper. Which, coincidentally, happens to have a total CMC of , which is how much the sword costs to cast.

    January 31, 2017 10:01 p.m.

    snotice says... #35

AiryNeon: well, yes. The protection makes even stronger. I think they'll give them static abilities like first strike and deathtouch.

    January 31, 2017 10:07 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #36

snotice: But that would be so BORING.

    January 31, 2017 10:14 p.m.

    snotice says... #37

AiryNeon: well, Protection is now deciduous, so it can happen, but I doubt it.

    January 31, 2017 10:35 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #38

Daedalus19876 good point, it should read "add to your mana pool. Until end of turn, this mana doesn't empty from your mana pool as steps and phases end" but that starts to feel a bit lengthy.

the is tricky because they are both elements that are commonly destructive so finding a beneficial route aside from tokens.

AiryNeon but look the sword of pain/gain is almost a complete upgrade from Sword of Fire and Ice, dealing an extra damage and drawing an extra card.

snotice so you mean like Fists of the Demigod etc?

    February 1, 2017 9:18 a.m.

    AiryNeon says... #39

Izu_Korasu true. Maybe instead of 3 damage it should be 2. However, with Sword of Fire and Ice, you lose no life, but still draw.

Perhaps the abilities should look more similar to this:

    Sword of Pain and Gain

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and black

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may have Sword of Pain and Gain deal 3 damage to target creature that player controls, and you draw two cards and lose two life.

    Equip

That still may be too overpowered. Can someone try and think of a more balanced red ability that still coincides with the keyword "Pain"?

    February 1, 2017 2:39 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #40

Maybe tbe red ability should be something like a reversed Pia's Revolution, except it's like:

Choose target artifact. That artifact's controller may have Sword of Pain and Gain deal 2 damage to them. If he or she does not, destroy that artifact.

    February 2, 2017 11:49 a.m.

    pizzagod13 says... #41

    What about...

Sword of Tyranny and Rebellion 3

Equiped creature gets +2/+2 and gains protection from red and black.

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player that player sacrifices target creature unless they lose life equal to its power, then deal 3 damage to target creature or player.

"The actions of a tyrant cause the fires of rebellion to blossom"

    February 2, 2017 11:57 a.m.

    Zaueski says... #42

    Sword of Shame and Passion

    Artifact - Equipment

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and Protection from Black and Protection from Red

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature and you may exile the top card of your library until end of turn you may pay to cast that card where is that card's converted mana cost.

    Equip

All of you guys just keep copying Sword of Fire and Ice. Red and black do have other beneficial abilities. This one feels a lot more distinct to imo. The name could use a bit of work, but the ability is solid.

    February 2, 2017 12:18 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #43

Zaueski I like that. The wording certainly needs some work, but other than that it is good. I think Pain and Gain still might be a worthy name for your idea.

    February 2, 2017 12:34 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #44

Zaueski yea ive been drawing a blank, i do like the the chosen modes and the may ability seems important and i like the exile mechanic on the sword, theres alot of "may" options on a mechanic and swords that tend to be mandatory effects.

and while i realize that its essentially a self directed Grenzo, Havoc Raiser, the sword may be better off mimicking Prophetic Flamespeaker or Commune with Lava which standard printings, rather then supplemental ones.

    so maybe:

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature and exile the top card of your library, until your next turn, you may play that card.

    February 2, 2017 2:39 p.m. Edited.

    Zaueski says... #45

Yeah, I considered just an Abbot of Keral Keep effect, but I wanted it to be a little bit stronger because its supposed to be a Sword. Free cast seemed way too powerful, I thought this was a happy medium so you don't have to worry about mana colors.

    February 2, 2017 2:44 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #46

Maybe there could even be mono colored swords. Or, what might be cool, what if there were swords that were colors for each Shard and Wedge?

    February 2, 2017 3:05 p.m.

    Zaueski says... #47

That seems a bit much, ally-colored swords might eventually be a thing. But the others certainly wouldn't

    February 2, 2017 3:11 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #48

    ex

    Sword of Chaos and Corrosion

Equipped Creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and green

When Equipped Creature deals combat damage to a player, draw two then discard one at random and you may destroy an artifact or enchantment that player controls.

    Equip

the red based on the early red cards like Goblin Lore, Control of the Court and Burning Inquiry scales to fit the multiple use nature of the swords.

the green is based on the efficient artifact/enchantment destruction that green is known for Naturalize etc.

    February 2, 2017 4:20 p.m.

    Izu_Korasu says... #49

the ally swords may eventually be a thing, but they will either be scaled to fit the current interactive version of combat wizards is pushing (ex keywords like trample or flying instead of protection)

or will be printed in a supplemental product like commander 2017 (which should be the ally guilds) or something like conspiracy 3.

    February 2, 2017 4:31 p.m.

    AiryNeon says... #50

Izu_Korasu up the power level of one of those ablilities, and you've got yourself a deal. Maybe instead of at random, its a choice, like Faithless Looting, or it has a wheel with a bonus kind of effect, like Fateful Showdown.
