Here’s my two cents on the matter

Crypt - it’s one time use which makes it risky. If you can’t kill your opponent soon after cracking it they will likely be able to fill their yard again.

Relic - has slight upside over crypt since it can remove one card at a time and you can crack it. Of course one card each turn is probably too slow most of the time.

Surgical - pretty good since it completely removes one specific threat that your opponent plays. Of course if they have many threats it’s less helpful.

Rest In Peace - completely shuts down the graveyard preventing anything from going in. Probably the best option but can be removed by stuff like Assassin's Trophy .

Cage - similar to rest in peace with the benefit that it shuts down deck based strategies also. The downside is that it doesn’t stop cards from going onto the yard so when it’s removed your probably going to die immediately.

Personally if your playing white you should probably go with Rest In Peace, but it’s up 2 you.

EDHrec is a great reasource for this and I would suggest giving it a look.

It will give you a bunch of cards that are good in a commander of your choice based on what other players have put in their own decks.

The website shouldn’t be used as a hard rule since some of the cards it suggest might not be that great but overall it’s pretty helpful for build the skeleton of your deck.

Just something to consider :)

So basically what I mean to say is that if a group hug deck will work in your playgroup depends on the following

  1. Strength of the play group. If you give people advantage in a cut throat group the game is just going to end. Less strong playgroups should be fine with it.

  2. How your deck is built. If you play removal and or win conditions people in your playgroup will start to target you since at that point letting you do your group hug stuff is detrimental. If you are a legitimate group hug deck you should be fine, assuming of course your playgroup knows this.

That’s just my two cents on group hug decks from personal experience, it really just depends on you and your playgroup.

Group Hug really depends on my play group. Mine is mostly decks that are a few hundred dollars max so my group hug deck with the happy hippo works pretty well.

I am pretty much never target and give cards and mana to everyone.

That being said mine is no win con and my play group knows this, so if you plan on playing with a win condition in yours keep in mind that people might target you next time you try to play it...
