Solemnity Brews for Modern

Modern Deck Help forum

Solemnity feels like a card with a ton of potential. For example, paired with Phyrexian Unlife, you can't die from damage. I'm curious what other cards would be strong as the rules for this seem hit or miss. Cards like Thing in the Ice , Geralf's Messenger, and Murderous Redcap also have potential as well as hosing decks like infect and stopping cards like Arcbound Ravager in Affinity. Any other ideas?

Thing in the Ice  Flip is a instant flip, Geralf's Messenger with a sac outlet like Viscera Seer is infinite life loss, same with murderous redcap. It has a LOT of potential.

Thing in the Ice  Flip doesn't flip until you cast your first instant or sorcery. The card doesn't check its counters until you've triggered it through casting a spell.

Anything with Persist or Undying, obviously. Anything with Cumulative Upkeep. Kitchen Finks.

The tough thing about getting that deck together is casting Solemnity with enough time to spare to actually turn the game on your favor.

Just play podless pod (creatures toolbox) and run this. So vizier of remedies Finks collected company melira and chord.

This card is getting banned.

Just saying.

No its not, its slower than Devoted Druid and Vizier of Remedies and not as easily tutorable. It also doesnt win the game on the spot without some good set up. All of its win cons are creature based so its still as vulnerable as Collected Company decks to disruption.

If a decent turn 4 game winning combo shows up its going to get banned. Wizards hates good infinite combos and consequently everybody who appreciates them.

Elves, Knightfall, and Coco are all faster and more reliable combos than this, none of them are OP and none of them are banned. The ideal Solemnity Deck would go T1 Viscera Seer, T2 Murderous Redcap/Kitchen Finks or any other outlet through a Simian Spirit Guide, T3 Solemnity and win. Thats extremely disruptible, its vulnerable to kill spells, hand attack counter magic etc etc. And even my example would be the stone cold nuts for that deck.

Just putting it out there, I think it's a great sideboard card.

For standard? Absolutely. Being able to completely shut down energy decks and +1/+1 counters decks is super powerful. In EDH it could probably make its way into some control lists. In anything else? Probably not, especially with Infect being dead, Fatal Push is just such a better answer to infect than this. And like it does stop some of affinitys toys but again, there's just better cards to sideboard. If energy is popular this will be, once energy decks die out this will quickly fade to <$5 bulk status

I think you undervalue the card. Sure Stony Silence is better vs Affinity but it's worthless vs Kitchen Finks and yes Path to Exile will be more relevant in the first few turns against Infect but this shuts down the deck. Ghost Quarter is certainly a better answer for Gavony Township but this works as well.

I'm not saying it's the next Leyline of the Void but it does bring a lot to the table against a multitude of decks.

Zaueski - you're not wrong... but Wizards has put a cork in plenty of combos that can be easily stopped before.

I just wouldn't be surprised if something happened.

I don't see it as too oppressive of a card against the current modern format. I just appreciate the versatility of it. Paired with Melira, Sylvok Outcast or Mikaeus, the Unhallowed for a combo deck or with Phyrexian Unlife in an enchantress/prison/pillow fort build. Like Panharmonicon, the card can generate a lot of value, but does very little the first turn it hits the battlefield. I think it is a brew-worthy card at the least and at the most could be stronger with future support and sneak a top 8 against a format lacking in main/sideboard enchantment answers.
