The Rock —Jan. 16, 2015

APPLE01DOJ's been extremely helpful and lead me to the Rock and I think it can work. Baited out a UW control on turn 4 with Inquisition of Kozilek-he countered with Dissolve(that seems kindof slow but I'm not a expert) then landed a Liliana of the Veil so it's looking promising? I've never really made a competitive sb so that's something that needs work

I think that for a midrange deck you play way too much 4+ cmc creatures, and you are missing a basic of any deck that plays black : discard. I'd take out 5 creatures for 5 discard spells

I'm taking the more combo-midrange strategy, so I decided I could go the discard route or focus more on the fatties and i did the latter(basically what midrange decks are, my reference on the bottom). I see where you're coming from. Almost all competitive black decks go the discard route. Also black red isn't known for ramp, so it's more rogue than most decks. But after playing some I've liked how it functions, without the discard(still needs tweaking and lots more playtesting) While I can use discard to my advantage I'd rather focus on pumping out big creatures as fast as possible or the combo. The creatures are very synergetic as well. I do appreciate all the help man:)

My reference, it's older but still gets the job done I think

I see your point of view, but I have to agree that discard is necessary here. This deck will lose to a T2 Pod almost always. Path will hit your Master of Cruelties, and T4 infinite Deceiver Exarchs are too consistent and too fast for this deck. However, even something budget like Duress can be the card that turns a god hand from a T1 deck into a bad hand.

SpartanCEL says... #5

Alright so discard seems like a nice option I'll try it out. How much discard? Is 6 enough? I've read people debate 4 Thoughtseize to 2 Inquisition of Kozilek or probably Duress for now but just throwing stuff out. Be back later

January 11, 2015 2:10 p.m.

Programmer_112 says... #6

I think for this deck 6 is more than enough, as it's just a way to save you from cards that'll wreck your face faster than you can make big fatties. I would probably go with Duress over Inquisition of Kozilek, as it hits Birthing Pod and your biggest threats aren't normally creatures

January 11, 2015 2:25 p.m.

Yggdrasil60 says... #7

I'd recommand a split of 2 Thoughtseize/3 Duress and one more discard spell in the SB.

I'm back for a few minutes. I honestly love how you two take such a stance on helping me out I can come up with ideas and make decent decks but to make it competitive obviously I needed some help so thanks guys. Anywho

I never really liked 4 boros reckoners so I'm cool with the following cuts?

-2 Boros Reckoner

-1 Rakdos, Lord of Riots

-1 Wurmcoil Engine

-1 something maybe Phyrexian Arena

Then have 1 in the side I probably could run 6 discard too

January 11, 2015 3:36 p.m.

Yggdrasil60 says... #9

Yup, and for the last card to cut, i'd say another rakdos.
Np for the help, I like to help people :p

January 11, 2015 3:48 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #10

So is that for #5 or 6? Like should I cut a Phyrexian Arena and Rakdos (sadly 2 can work) for 6 discard?

Delmare says... #11

Is there any specific reason to use Terminate over Dreadbore?

I am not a huge fan of Graven Cairns. Could you substitute it with Auntie's Hovel since you are going to want that Goblin Fireslinger in your opening hand anyways? Or you could go with Temple of Malice. I know it comes in tapped, but that Scry 1. There is also Sulfurous Springs.

Also, would anyone be willing to take a gander at my recently put together deck. It was originally a Standard Warrior deck (hence the Chief of Scales) and I basically redid the entire thing. It doesn't take into account FRF that is coming out soon though. My R/W/B Nothing stays dead for long.

January 11, 2015 4:47 p.m.

Yggdrasil60 says... #12

Terminate is an instant, Dreadbore isn't. PW aren't played in modern anyway, except for liliana and sometimes Ajani v2. Nothing more to say

January 11, 2015 5:21 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #13

Updated

Lets try that? 6 removal, we may go 5

January 11, 2015 8:32 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #14

Delmare sorry I didn't reply till now busy with other things (like your deck lol) but I really like Graven Cairns it works absolutely beautifully I need for Boros Reckoner? He has me covered or black? Got me and ? Still got me, and it doesn't require life. Yes I do want the goblin in my hand but that doesn't happen consistently, none of my lands enter tapped(without choice) so it consistently casts cards the turn they were meant to be played (sometimes there's a hick but 24 lands it's not too often) I did consider Sulfurous Springs but we take enough damage from lands and I haven't had too much of an issue with mana even with Rakdos, Lord of Riots I can usually cast him.

Alright so Yggdrasil60, Programmer_112 and Delmare would Slaughter Pact be a good option? I've seen competitive decks run a 1 of. It doesn't seem to make a huge difference just because it's a one of but who knows

January 12, 2015 10:04 p.m.

Slaughter Pact is good for the surprise effect, but unless you find yourself wanting to tap out but needing a removal spell that much, I don't think it's that much better than just playing Doom Blade and saving 1 mana.

January 12, 2015 10:12 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #16

I was thinking if I got the 3 pieces to the MoC puzzle we'd be tappedout. But true besides that it doesn't seem to powerful, but then again it's like 7.5$, not that price completely determines playability but it represents it sometimes

January 12, 2015 10:16 p.m.

It's good if your goal is to nut draw, but it looks like you're moving away from that, so I would say just test them and see if it helps

January 13, 2015 11:19 a.m.

SpartanCEL says... #18

Put in Batterskull for Wurmcoil Engine 1 cmc cheeper making it turn 3 with Generator Servant and we can reuse it more than wurmcoil's ability. Also thinking about bringing back a Rogue's Passage or two I want my lands to do something as well or even Lavaclaw Reaches

January 14, 2015 4:27 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #19

So Batterskull doesn't count as a creature so that sucks. Maybe Stormbreath Dragon? We'll see

January 14, 2015 6:04 p.m.

klone13 says... #20

i think Wurmcoil Engine would be the way to go then. Also in my opinion Phyrexian Arena is too slow.

January 14, 2015 6:09 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #21

klone13 I didn't explain myself sorry I was in a rush. I really want a 5 (or 4 if it's that good) because at best Wurmcoil Engine is a 4 drop with haste. I'm trying to make it as competitive as possible. I'm trying for a 3 drop with haste. I'll update the goal of the deck soon I want to use the pieces of the combo if I don't get all three (synergy with Generator Servant is what I'm looking at rn, Goblin Fireslinger works great with Rakdos, Lord of Riots. Just a quick philosophy of my thinking

January 14, 2015 8:38 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #22

If I don't find a good replacement Wurmcoil Engine will be back

January 14, 2015 8:39 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #23

I do partially agree with that. Phyrexian Arena turn 3 is amazing but unless I run more it won't happen and it was just there so I'd have 5 cards dedicated to draw, plus the life usually sucks against competitive/fast decks (which is what we're trying to make slowly but surely haha) Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker could possibly cover that and he's removal and a threat so let's try that. Turn 5 isn't great but a turn 3 is possible and hey it's basically a Stormbreath Dragon but arguably better

January 14, 2015 10 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #24

Cmc distribution seems a little skewed right so I'll be thinking about that.

January 14, 2015 10:25 p.m.

klone13 says... #25

i personally like Thundermaw Hellkite over sarkhan
