Sadly with them rotating out the deck will be losing a lot of it's co trol shell beginnings. I might favor a more agressive build using Captain of the Watch to bring in at least 9 power when the angel hits the board. Good idea or not?

Ok, I know you had asked me to look recently but I wasn't too active. But here is some advice for the solar flare deck.
This is my solar flare deck that has got quite a lot of success Solar Flare.
Now quite honestly, this deck isn't even close to solar flare. There are several auto includes that aren't in here that should be. But let me try to help you understand what solar flare is.
Solar flare is a deck that controls mid to late game, by board sweepers, permanent removal, and reanimation of finishers. The main purpose is to control. This deck was invented long ago behind Angel of Despair and Zombify and Frantic Search . To ditch finishers to the grave and re-animate so they have a big dude to deal with as well as removing a permanent.
This deck also has a HIGH land count, as you simply cannot afford to miss a land drop.
4 forbidden alchemy1-3 Unburial rites3-4 Sun Titan3-4 day of judgment2 oblivion ring
Now there are other highly recommended cards, but the above are absolutely needed. Most decks run about 5-7 finishers, as well as 1-3 Phantasmal Image and maybe a snapcaster mage.
Here are some highly recommended cards:
2-3 Tragic slip/Dead weight2-3 Liliana of the Veil2 Ratchet bomb3-4 mana leak1 Elesh norn, grand cenobite.
Don't run small creatures. I've seen some do it but I personally don't think its worth it at all. Solar flare is an expensive deck, which is why many choose to not play it.

I did try to stick as closely as possible to the control shell while trying to incorporate humans, unfortunately its pretty hard. The deck has had quite a lot of changes since and is now more on the offensive, theres a neat little combo with a boardwipe, angel of glory's rise, archaeomancer and fiend hunter, its fun and surprisingly consistent. I guess this is just a human deck then :-( oh well
