The idea is pretty simple, drop big creatures to be your offense/defense while gaining life. It is entirely possible to use this deck with out red. you just need to switch mayal's aria with felidar and swap out the three creatures with red. I like them though because bloodthorn's ability boosts offense, knotvine is a good mana source, and wooly thoctar, despite having three colors, comes around quite a lot and turned the tide for me many times.
