Major Update, the same combo —May 15, 2015

-1 Azami

+1 Hapless researcher

Works the same, but you can even play Hapless Researcher from your hand, if that's required, saving a Cabal Therapy for other purposes. Also, in an hypothetical and strange pairing, Legend Rule doesn't screw up all.

-4 Gitaxian Probe

-2 Street Wraith

+2 Cabal Therapy

+2 Pact of Negation

+2 Chancellor of the Annex

Gitaxian Probe and Street Wraith were only here for his drawing capabilities. But this cards make more difficult to mulligan, while don't assure you the necessary draw. Is better a mulligan to find the correct hand than a hand with one or two cantrips. And I feel that I need more defensive stuff to protect the combo. With a whole Cabal Therapy playset in your graveyard, peek opponent's hand with Gitaxian Probe is also unnecessary. You can use the first one with a wild guess, the next one will hit just on the spot. You don't need to worry about the Therapies costs messing with the Dread Return cost thanks to Bridge from Below, so... why don't use all of them?

-2 Cabal Therapy (Sideboard)

-2 Pact of Negation (Sideboard)

-2 Chancellor of the Annex (Sideboard)

Therapy, Pact and Chancellor are all promoted to the main deck.

+4 Nature's Claim (Sideboard)

It's the only reliable way to get rid of some annoying Graveyard Hate, like Leyline of the Void or Tormod's Crypt. At least, the cheapest way to do so, with an acceptable cost.

+4 Leyline of Sanctity (Sideboard)

For those turn-one discard cards. Blackmail, Cabal Therapy, Despise, Duress...

I don't get it. Wouldn't you have to be lucky enough to draw your mana ramp first?

Awesome, awesome awesome. Playtested once and won on turn one. Huge plus one from me for a great combo concept.

TheGamer, there's 20 free mana providers that acts like a land (8 spirit guides, 4 Lotus Petal , 4 Chrome Mox and 4 Summoner's Pact for Elvish Spirit Guide ), 9 fixers (4 Summoner's Pact for Wild Cantor , Wild Cantor itself and 4 Manamorphose ) and 8 Mana-Bombs (Rituals). That's 33 mana-producer or mana-fixer cards. If that's not enought, in addition of Summoner's Pact , there's also 10 effectively free cantrips (2 Street Wraith , 4 Gitaxian Probe and 4 Manamorphose ) for get a thin library.

Yes, luck is a factor in Magic. But with 33 mana-related cards in a 50-card deck seems fine to minimize that factor.

If you need extra disruption to make sure your combo stays, my friend played this deck and mentioned Chancellor of the Annex . They can't Force you or Daze you Turn 1, which is where everything is the most important. He also said that if he didn't win turn 1 or 2, he basically didn't win.... haha. But this is one of my favorite combo decks so...Anyways. Very nice!Oops All Spells.. :D

I like the Chancellor idea, thanks Armenius.

Merchant of Secrets / Council of Advisors over Azami if you'd rather have a triggered ability than an activated one (not sure if this is important at all). Nice deck though! Like dredge on steroids!

I think that's unimportant, FTR. Cards like Merchant of Secrets or other activated effects like Hapless Researcher , for example, will work fine. The only difference I can see is that Azami, Lady of Scrolls is stronger versus Stifle , but Dread Return 's flashback is a better target for Stifle , so that's unlikely.

Someone can see a significant difference using triggered abilities over activated ones?

Chancellor of the Tangle may seems a logical fit in this deck, Rakkhive, but testing with this card is not good enough. It's colorless mana with Chrome Mox (since I need only black), and only gives mana if I get it from my start hand, not by drawing with cantrips.

"Use Narcomoeba to cast Dread Return "

I don't get it. when Narcomoeba comes into play you can only sac two creatures total right? or where are you getting the other creatures?

How's your protection against Force of Will and other counterspells? You might need more than two Cabal Therapy 's, maybe three. Other than that, I love this combo. :)

Arzakon says... #15

The only protection agains disruptive threats from my opponents are 2 Cabal Therapy and 2 Pact of Negation . I tried Force of Will and even Disrupting Shoal , but the exiling cost is a huge deal in this deck. In the sideboard, there's the extra 2 copies of them, with 4 Chancellor of the Annex .

I don't know other protection cards that will fit (mana-free counterspells or disruptive effect from your graveyard), and that bothers me. You know some other, Chilli_Axe?

October 7, 2013 10:57 a.m.

You would need a few Island s, but Daze is almost a free counter spell. I can see how the land would mess with your flow, though.

Yeah those FoW and Mindbreak Trap are definitely something to watch out for. If you can sideboard enough answers and help protect the combo, should be good.

I was laughing so hard when I saw what this deck did! But, in attempts to playtest it, I could not consistently get it to go off turn one (only once out of ten times did I get it to work). The problem is the mana. I could never either get enough of it, or get enough black mana.

Just some suggestions:1) If you could add Lion's Eye Diamond , that might just make your deck.2) I ran into several points when I had a Chrome Mox on the board, but all the black cards in my hand to imprint on it were essential to the combo, so I couldn't use it. I'd have 4 Street Wraith s in this deck if I were you... because his draw is instant speed, unlike the probe, he is more black to serve as fodder for your Mox, and because you shouldn't need to look at his hand to know the only 2-3 cards that could possibly stop your combo... Force of Will , Surgical Extraction , or Extirpate (if he went first)... So you'd still know enough, to accurately call out your opponent's combo-breaking card for Cabal Therapy .
