Legacy Burn

Legacy

Sideboard

My budget attempt at playing Burn in legacy. I have constructed the deck so as to make our better matchups (those against fair decks) most optimal, and have chosen to give up on the dredge matchups almost entirely, focusing on beating reanimator with the gy hate.

January 21, Cockatrice, Maverick, Win:

G1: Kept my opening 7. I was able to constrain his mana by killing BoP and his Dryad Arbor. I ran away with the game with Grim Lavamancer and a Swiftspear.

G2: Mulled away a hand with no creatures for consistent damage source. Kept my 6 for Lavamancer. Tried to Searing Blaze his BoP and got Swan Songed. The Bird token alongside Vortex and Lavaman ran away with the game as I used burn to keep his board clear.

January 22, Cockatrice, BUG, Win:

G1: Kept my 7. I killed off an early Tarmogoyf and allowed Goblin Guide to do the heavy lifting before resolving a Vortex. My opponent conceded after casting Brainstorm and finding no outs.

G2: Kept my 7. Hymn to Tourachs ate away at my opening hand, which had a lot of lands in it, but they seemed impervious to the randomizer. We both went into top deck mode. He casts a Lazav, the Nefarious that I have to double bolt before he can untap with enough mana to counter my burn and make a Phyrexian Devourer. He's at 14 life at this point. He resolves a Goyf a couple turns later. 4 spells in one turn allowed me to close out the game through FoW, Spell Pierce, and Flusterstorm and win the turn before I was dead to Goyf (double Fireblast action).

January 22, Cockatrice, 4c Control, Win:

G1: Kept my 7. Copied Chain Lightning to kill Eidolon (misread on my part) and a FoW on my Vortex hurt early. My opponent copied another Chain Lightning later to try to increase his clock, but that put me in range of double Fireblast by copying it myself, and I won the game.

G2: Kept my 7. After getting in some damage with just spells, I drew into consistent damage sources. Eidolon gets FoW'd and then a Vortex gets Hydroblasted. With my opponent at 8 and a hand comprised of Searing Blaze, Bolt, Bolt, and Fireblast, I gave my opponent the opportunity to ultimate his Liliana, the Last Hope so I'd have a target for Searing Blaze. This allowed me to play around a suspected counterspell and win the game through his FoW.

January 23, Cockatrice, Salvagers Combo, Win:

G1: Kept my 7. On the play. Resolve a Guide and start chipping in. T1 Chalice from my opponent hurts (obviously). T2 Chalice on 2 that I respond to with Price of Progress to put him to 8. Swung him down to 6 with Guide, but his next turn Ballista was able to block my dude, and his following turn he drew into Salvagers for the win.

G2: Kept my 7 on the play for an Eidolon, Price of Progress, and Exquisite Firecraft. Forced him to block Eidolon with his Ballista. Drew into Smash to Smithereens to take care of his T2 Chalice. Followed up with Exquisite Firecraft for lethal.

G3: Kept a questionable 7 on the draw. Opponent leads with T1 Chalice. Topdeck Smash because pure skill. Ancient Tomb helps us a lot in this matchup; by my t2, my suspended rift bolt put to him to 13. Smash brings him to 8. Next turn, suspend Rift Bolt, cast Chain Lightning, then I cast upkeep Bolt on his turn (playing through Ethersworn Canonist) to keep him off Tomb mana. He pluses Karn, and I give him Chalice knowing he can't cast it for enough to counter Rift Bolt, and I win.

January 29, Cockatrice, Grixis Delver, Win:

G1: Kept my 7. Early Daze on my Grim Lavamancer indicated it was likely some sort of Delver list, so I adjusted my play accordingly. I killed an early Young Pyromancer by baiting the FoW with my previously suspended Rift Bolt and then killing it with a landfallen Searing Blaze. He resolves a next turn Angler, and it's a race. I won the game by getting him to 3 with an end step Price of Progress that forced a fetch for a basic. I untap with 3 mana and a Fireblast in hand after a Kolaghan's Command stripped away my basic. I draw Sulfuric Vortex. I float 3 mana and cast Blast, he FoW's it, and I resolve Vortex to seal the game in his upkeep.

G2: I boarded in both Searing Blazes, Exquisite Firecraft, and the 2 Pyroblast variants. The second game goes a little more poorly as he's able to resolve Young Pyromancer and counter each of my spells that would kill it, which makes my race virtually impossible, so I scooped at 12 life facing down 5 tokens.

G3: I decide to bring in the Fallouts and a Pillar in the stead of 2 Price of Progress and the other Vortex. We both mull to 6. I'm able to resolve a T1 Swiftspear that gets Pushed on the next turn. I put him to 8 by my turn 3 after a Searing Blaze hits his Baleful Strix. I have Exquisite Firecraft in hand and a basic to pitch in case of K Command, so I'm just waiting for action. I cast a Pyrostatic Pillar that he has to FoW, down to 7. He fetches to 6. He plays Young Peezy, which I attempt to Searing Blaze after fetching. He FoW's again. Down to 5. He K Commands me, and I pitch the land I've been holding for that reason. I top deck Fireblast. Float the mana, cast Fireblast and cast Firecraft to win the game.
