Storm of Creation

Modern RUG (Temur)

vikingist

Sideboard

Temur Storm in modern using Song of Creation and various recursion mechanics (escape, flashback, and jump-start) to go off.

Some thoughts:

  1. Drawing two cards off of cheap or free artifacts like bauble, astrolabe, and tormod's crypt reduces the need for the usual cantrip package, but Serum Visions gets to stay because it's still one of the best first turn plays in Magic. Also, bauble's "draw a card on the next upkeep" clause helps with Song of Creation's downside.

  2. Ignorant Bliss can just fully prevent Song's downside if you stack the triggers correctly AND it draws you another card. I'm not sure yet if this is actually good or just cute, so I threw it in the sideboard for now. It might be great and double as a bargain veil of summer, especially since we can't run any counters.

  3. Radical Idea is obviously not the best cantrip, but the fact that it can be cast from graveyard means it will probably be the first card you play on the turn you win, unless you top-deck something better.

  4. Utopia Sprawl might seem like an odd inclusion but we need to both ramp and fix pretty heavily in order to play Song of Creation fast enough. In the best-case scenario we can manage that with rituals and manamorphose, but Utopia Sprawl is a good backup plan and gives us more mana to play with on the turn we win. Also, post-Song, Sprawl is still a decent draw: it nets us a card and is essentially free since we should be able to play it on an untapped land.

  5. I don't think Baral and Goblin Electromancer will be as important to this type of deck. When every spell draws two cards in addition to whatever else it was going to do, and we are getting an extra land drop, we don't need to get as much value from our mana acceleration. That said, I left in two Barals since they are still worthwhile and we don't need them in play to start comboing.

  6. Not sure about mulligan strategy. I don't think we mulligan much in order to ensure we have a "Song of Creation" in our opening hand. In fact, it's safer in our deck than in our opening hand, since we can't cast it yet. A third of all cards in the deck are cantrips so we should find a copy pretty fast.
