Hey everyone. So if you haven't seen Yurlok yet, he was recently spoiled and looks like a lot of fun.

Yurlok

He is reintroducing the mana burn mechanic and i'm building a group slug style deck to go with him.

I would appreciate everyone's thoughts and suggestions on my deck if you're interested!

You probably want to run Overabundance then.

Already on the list, but thank you

WOTC YOU FOOLS

Looks like a terrifying deck, I'll be interested to see how kill-on-sight that CMDR will be :)

Omniscience_is_life he really does seem like a lot of fun. The hope will definitely be to have a Lightning Greaves or something out for protection because I am expecting a lot of hate from pretty much everyone.

You're going to want to wait to have open mana before casting Yurlok, for a Imp's Mischief or to equip Swiftfoot Boots. That's my suggestion for the deck

Seedborn Muse is a must 12 point life swing each turn rotation.

RNR_Gaming Seedborn is already on the list, but thank you

First: I am SO GLAD to have manaburn back, baby! People need to be held accountable for their overpowered mana flooding out of their fancy nonbasics ;D

I think it would be fun to start enchanting your opponents lands to produce extra mana, on top of mana flare, with things like Wild Growth. Maybe not super effective, but definitely hilarious.

FormOverFunction

So I try to accomplish similar goals with some of my other creatures/enchantments, but in a way that effects everyone and not just one player.

I'm currently running Zhur-Taa Ancient, Heartbeat of Spring, Mana Flare, Overabundance, and Vernal Bloom that accomplish this goal.

Additionally I have several Magus of the Vineyard type effects to give everyone mana whether they tap a land or not.

Keeper of Progenitus comes down early and effects a lot of colors, in case you're looking for more of those effects :)

I'll add it in for consideration. Thanks!

I'm going to need to start running Kruphix just to counter this MFer tbh

That's why we run Helix Pinnacle and some of the other slug pieces! Even if I can't burn you properly, you're still in for pain

Massacar I worry with cards like Zhur-Taa Ancient that you are enabling your opponents more than anything. If the goal is to be group slug and not group hug, you want to give them mana that they can't use, and not so much mana that they just annihilate you. Sure, with so much mana they'll probably get burned for one or two here and there, but ultimately they'll tap just enough to do what they want and go nuts. Is there a way you have thought of to combat this?

Podma101 it has admittedly been a concern, and to be honest I don't have a real solution yet (granted I've been building this deck for less than a day so far).

One thought is that they do act as political pieces that may change how players choose to view me in terms of threat. By having a hybridized hug/slug strategy (these cards are the only huggish cards in the deck) I may be able to double dip in certain contexts.

Obviously I could remove these cards, but I would like reliable ways to flood my opponents with mana.

Massacar I look at your list and your price and at $700 it safe to say your willing to spend money on this deck but before i make card rec I would like to know if there is a set budget for the deck as whole example $1200 max and if there a budget for individual cards like no more than $40 for a card type of thing. And was wondering why you don't have Sanguine Bond in your deck since you have Exquisite Blood as that would a third win con?

Stardragon tbh I have no idea when I'll be able to afford to actually build the deck. Generally I just try to stay away from cards that are $50+ except for certain tutors like Vampiric Tutor.

While I am aware of the Bond/Blood combo it wasn't really my intention to put it in the deck. Exquisite Blood was put in the deck more to make sure that I'm gaining life from all the burn damage I do and to keep the deck in the game. I can consider adding the other half of the combo, (maybe as Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose for budget/CMC).

I've made quite a few tweaks, so hopefully it should function a bit better.

what about card that only punish them for not playing cardsIron Maiden, Black Vise, The Rack or Scalding Tongs? Punish them for having too much mana and punish them for not using any at all since your making a slug deck the punishment the better. On that note I could of sworn there was a enchantment that dealt damage to each player during their end step equal to the number of untapped lands they had, I can't remember the name or if I remembered it right. If you can find it I would add it as it compels them to tap all there mana. Also what about one sided damage doublers like Fiendish Duo, Gratuitous Violence or Wound Reflection?

Massacar says... #23

I believe you are thinking of Citadel of Pain, which is already in the deck.

I really like your hand punishment idea though, and will definitely look at integrating it into the deck. So thank you for that suggestion.

Of the doubler cards, I only feel like I would include Wound Reflection since it would cover all types of loss of life.

October 29, 2020 11:04 p.m.

Stardragon says... #24

Yes Citadel of Pain was what I was thinking of I must of missed when I looking at your list

Glad you liked my hand punishment ideas im also make a slug and they are in it.

And yeah I understand why only Reflection would make the cut since I miss read your commander, I thought it was each player is dealt damage not each player loses life my bad.

If I'm remembering my cards right Mana Web should be fun in that one as well

Tibus says... #26

I also forgot about painful quandry force your opponents to decide when they play a card if they are going to pay 5 life or discard a card that could potentially save them from more mana burn.

October 31, 2020 2:12 p.m.

Massacar says... #27

Tibus thank you, but both those cards are already in the deck.
