Main goal of this deck is to counter everything the opponent plays until you can safely get Teferi out, then continue the counters until you can get a win con
three win cons in order of least to most likely are: opponent drawing out, niv mezzet combat damage, niv + explosion, explosion.
The reason my deck features a lot of white board control spells rather than counters is because I find that there are some things that are better to deal with once their on the board. For example archlight phoenix with haste is a big threat, so I play two settle, two seal away, and one syncopate to ensure that they can be exiled at any given time. Carnage tyrant is also a big threat, which settle, cleansing nova, and either clarion + clarion or clarion + expansion can deal with. Niv can also deal with carnage tyrant. Ixalan's binding is there to ensure that your opponent's power cards are not played.
As for counters, most people will question my choices. The reason I play a lot of essence scatters and negates is because they are very cheap counters that can be played both early on and later int he game that are cost effective at what they do. I play three sinister sabotage to help me cycle through my deck a bit. I also play a syncopate for if I ever need to exile a card before it hits the table, and a devious cover up which not only can exile but can also shuffle teferis back into the deck.
Lastly, I also play two azcantas because those are amazing for first cycling through your deck to get cards that you need, and then once transformed they will essentially allow you to grab any spell you need, and you can even untap them with teferi, making them an amazing source of cards.
