Mental Misstep uses?

Could someone explain to me exactly how Mental Misstep is so good? I never understood why people would play it.

Mostly because it kills all sorts of cards for next to nothing. Think Ponder , Giant Growth , Birds of Paradise , Shock , Lightning Bolt , etc. Run a Gatherer search for spells with a 1 cmc. It's a lot of good stuff.

The Q&A is reserved for rules questions. This is more of a general card question.

Mental Misstep is a fantastic utility counterspell. It has the advantage of being able to be cast for no mana, meaning that on turn 0 or after being tapped down, you can still control some of what goes on. Also, it can stop a large number of great cards, such as discard, dig, buff, and ping spells. Additionally, aggro decks (which thrive on 1-drop creatures and spells) are more easily controlled and defeated using Misstep (again, especially because it can be cast without mana).

One of the reason it was so good was it gave control a answer to one drop aggro creatures like Goblin Lackey and Wild Nacatl that wasn't a Force of Will . Also think about how many good cards are 1 CMC. AEther Vial , Brainstorm , Swords to Plowshares , Reanimate , Lightning Bolt , Enlightened Tutor , Cursecatcher , Path to Exile , Dark Ritual , Cabal Therapy , and of course Mental Misstep .

its a 1 or 0 mana counter when the oppenent taps out to play something

once it suprizes someone its likely to keep them from taping out to play something and 1 land can slow down a deck greatly

I fail to see how it would matter whether the opponent taps out for something. It's not a Mana Leak or Spell Pierce , it's a hard counter.

It is great for decks like Zoo, Goblins, and Combo to counter their stuff like AEther Vial , Brainstorm , Ancestral Recall , Ponder , Preordain , Duress , Gitaxian Probe , Cabal Therapy , Goblin Guide , Goblin Lackey , Wild Nacatl , Dark Ritual , Swords to Plowshares , Lightning Bolt , and my favorite 1 drop of all time, Deathrite Shaman on turn 1 when you just played your own Brainstorm or Wild Nacatl . It's banned for these reasons, and because Wizards thinks that somehow, this card is better than Force of Will or Daze .
