Modern forum

This thread is dedicated entirely to Modern. Feel free to post your thoughts on the meta, ideas for your next decklist, and just chat generally about the format!
Of course, you can always start a new thread if you're interested in discussing one particular aspect of the format; this thread should be used for the quick thoughts and informal questions about the format.
This discussion will be ongoing; you are free to post here as long as you're on topic.
This is NOT a deck help thread. Please do not spam deck help requests.
If you want to play casual, why constrain yourself with the restrictions of the Modern format? If you want to play casual please go ahead and do it, play EDH or whatever. I don't think Modern is a casual format, much like Standard and Legacy aren't.

I dont hate BBoV in the sideboard of UWRb Control.
Ojutai is gas.

And it shouldn't stop anybody. However I was hoping for a competitive oriented discussion in this thread. Mainly because it's dedicated to Modern only.
Maybe start a discussion in the Casual Forum to talk about Atarka in Modern? I don't know, am I being too spikey?

90% of the users on this site are casual users Putrefy.

"I do not like the way you play the game so I am going to tell you to not talk about the way you play the game".
Sound logic.
Modern is just a rules format. You can play it casually. You can play it competitively. Saying 'modern' denotes neither of those two subcategories specifically.
There's only so much you can say about T1 modern anyway, and T2 is huuuuugely more interesting in a variety of ways.

I thought this forum was more directed for Modern on a competitive level.
If its not than my bad.
April 30, 2015 6:43 a.m.
I try to discuss an archtype and get shut down. :(
So... Ill just be over here in my corner, 'casually' playtesting competitive decks all day long to determine if they fit my needs.. 'casually'... for many many hours on end..
(Let me know if yeh want to discuss Skred in a page or two.. cause Im not waking up til then..)

From the OP:
"Feel free to post your thoughts on the meta, ideas for your next decklist, and just chat generally about the format!"
Stop being elitist and get off your pedestal.

Skred is actually really sweet. I wish they would print a snow creature that was worth playing, just so your Skreds would get bigger.
April 30, 2015 6:53 a.m.
Does Cavern of Souls see any modern play outside of merfolk?
April 30, 2015 6:57 a.m.
lemmingllama says... #15
@-x-Juuzou-x-x- It sees play in Bloom Titan and in some Elves lists, also occasionally in G/W Hatebears if I recall.

Merfolk and Fae play some.
That card is really good and I wish it saw more play.
April 30, 2015 6:59 a.m.
@ ChiefBell I hope your day get's better. You seem to be very hostile today.
@ Femme_Fatale and that's perfectly fine with me. I was just hoping for a more competitive oriented discussion, like the 10% who are not casual talking business about what's currently going on in Modern. If that's not the case so be it.
@Ryotenchi I'm sorry, I have not much experience with Skred so I don't think I'm of help here.
@-x-Juuzou-x-x- in addition to merfolk and fae Bloom Titan used to run 1. Don't know if that's still the case.

Putrefy To be fair, this is the most competitive speaking we've done outside of decklists.
While I agree with you that I would like this to be competitive, Chief is right that it's for modern as a whole, rather than T1. T2 is also super interesting. You've got some awesome overlooked decks.
bijschjdbcd Blood Baron would work pretty well in a control deck, just like it did in standard. It wouldn't be a bad idea to chuck one in Esper Mentor.
April 30, 2015 7:22 a.m.
I'm actually having a good day. I just hate it when people unnecessary try to dictate the flow of conversation, or get grumpy because they don't like what other users are talking about for the sole reason of not sharing the same enjoyment for it.
April 30, 2015 7:23 a.m.

ChiefBell Directing the flow of conversation is pretty important for this to not turn into a shitposting plaza.
Ryotenchi Have you tried Merfolk yet? 'Wow, that's the complete opposite of everything I've done, and I have no cards for it!' Yeah, well Merfolk is fun, and does a pretty good job of screwing over mana bases with Spreading Seas, and proceeding to vial in a heap of lords to make Mutavault into a 5/5.

Fair enough I made it clear I agreed with Putrefy that I had 'hoped' the conversation would be kept relatively competitive but I didn't act grumpy I merely stated my stance on the topic.
Regardless, The verdict is to generalise the modern format so I'm not fussed.

Reading comprehension.

I like tier 1 decks as much as the next guy. All of you know I do. I absolutely love competitive modern. But there's no way I'm going to shut someone down for wanting to discuss T2 stuff. That's their right.
I also had hoped that we would focus on competitive but meh. Discussion changes. Be flexible.

I think you'll forgive me for reading over that statement equal to the number of times it was proofread.
Any idea how to force Jeskai Tokens in modern? Young Pyromancer seems to be the way to go, but Monastery Mentor is a little slow, especially when you want to drop a Jeskai Ascendancy on T3.
April 30, 2015 7:35 a.m.
That red card that does damage when creatures ETB. Was printed in khans or something?
April 30, 2015 7:43 a.m.
I don't think you necessarily need Ascendancy for Jeskai Tokens in Modern. However I think black might be the better supplementary color for the R/W-shell and not blue. Black gives you very good removal, hand-disruption, both Sorins who are excellent with tokens and you can use Lingering Souls very efficiently. Something like this:
4x Pyro
2x Mentor
4x Confi
4x Sculler
2x Butcher
4x Souls
1x New Sorin
1x Old Sorin
3x Path
4x Bolt
4x Inqui
2x Thoughtseize
2x Terminate
4x Flats
2x Mesa
2x Mire
1x Foundry
1x Crypt
1x Shrine
3x Muta
2x Tec-Edge/Ghost Quarter
1x Plains
1x Swamp
1x Moutain
4x Cliffs
Just a rough sketch.

The real issue with Jeskai tokens is that it isn't as efficient as B/W Tokens. That being said, Jeskai Tokens has a better late game. Maybe if we see more control showing up, then this would be superior. I personally love the late game Snapcaster Mage of a Spectral Procession

JexInfinite says... #34
So, Mardu tokens? Hmm. UWRb would probably work really well, with the black for Lingering Souls and possibly a new Sorin. Jeskai Ascendancy is so good because your creatures get bigger when you play stuff, alleviating the need for anthems, and looting with Lingering Souls is absolutely legit.
You would only need 2 Ascendancies, and a few Remand, maybe. Or a Mardu splash U for ascendancy would be interesting. I guess I just want people to play with Ascendancy in modern the way it was meant to be played.
April 30, 2015 7:52 a.m.
JexInfinite says... #35
Wait, I think I've got it. What if it's not Jeskai Tokens at all, but really a UWR midrange deck with Dragonlord Ojutai and Jeskai Ascendancy with some Young Pyromancer as an alternative win? It's a flavour fail, but basically-vigilance-Ojutai is sweet.

@Putrefy It probably wouldn't want delver, those slots could be used to trigger Jeskai Ascendancy and maybe Monastery Mentor as well

Hey I have a nebbish question to ask. What's the difference between T1 and T2? Also I think magic is most fun when played with friends. Kinda "kitchen table" magic, I totally get why people love competitive, just my opinion. Kitchen table magic for the win!! :D
April 30, 2015 8:30 a.m.
JexInfinite says... #43
A T1 deck is a deck which consistently posts top results. These include: Affinity, Twin, Abzan, Burn, and a couple of others, depending on who you ask.
A T2 deck posts good results, but not necessarily the best ones. Usually found going 3-1, and 4-0 consistently in MTGO dailies. Stuff like Delver, Amulet Bloom, Storm, Infect, Jund/BGx decks which aren't Abzan.
Then there's T3 which is the non-competitive decks which are still fun. This will include kitchen table magic, and brews.
Note that each person has different interpretations for tiers, but are pretty much all in agreement with what T1 decks are.
April 30, 2015 8:37 a.m.
I think no Delver of Secrets Flip makes for some weak T1 plays. You want to save Gitaxian Probe for Young Pyromancer, Serum Visions is awkward with additional fetches and I don't think Thought Scour is really that good now that Dig and TC are banned.
However I think not playing Delver is correct as there is already a functioning Grixis-Delver shell. If we don't abandon the blue we have to play Snapcaster Mage, so:
4x Young Pyromancer
4x Monastery Mentor
4x Snapcaster Mage
2x Ojutai
That reads awfully strange. It's like: aggro, aggro, value, 5 drop...
April 30, 2015 8:38 a.m.
JexInfinite says... #47
I'm not convinced on the 4 Mentors. I think 3 is the limit. It's just too slow to justify playing all 4 of them. If I've already landed a Mentor, I don't want to see another for the rest of the game, save after a board wipe, but nobody is playing Supreme Verdict.
Jeskai Ascendancy is looking like it would be at 3x. Celestial Colonnade is not especially great due to this not really being a control deck, so 2 would be my limit on that.
We should probably get someone to make a deck-page for this, because I'm convinced that we can force it.
April 30, 2015 8:48 a.m.
lemmingllama says... #48
I personally think that two Monastery Mentors is correct. It would compete with Jeskai Ascendancy in the 3 drop slot. I'd also probably say that 2-3 Snapcaster Mage would probably be best, since he isn't entirely necessary.
Also some smattering of Lightning Bolt, Forked Bolt, Gitaxian Probe, Serum Visions, Sleight of Hand, Vapor Snag, Spell Snare, Spell Pierce, etc. Basically just value one drop spells and token generators, then we loot into more value spells.

asasinater13: I was playing an Abzan tokens deck with 2x Sundering Growth mainboard. Needless to say, it's a deck meant for casual play only. :P

Im going to make a Prowess deck. Been trying to for a while. Probably my favorite mechanic wizards has made so far. Any one wanna help? I'd like to make it competitive... Adding colors and costly cards is not a problem...
Would love help with it.
JexInfinite says... #1
I'm pretty sure the casual crowd love it. If it had haste, it would be amazingly playable.
But mainly, Jeskai Dragons is a thing that people will try out, because Ojutai is playable.
