Suggestions for building an Oloro deck

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm very interested in building an Oloro, Ageless Ascetic life gain EDH deck, but can't imagine a win condition other than with Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond . I would hate to have that as my only win-con, as it seems hard to achieve continuously and I can imagine my play group would get fed up with it pretty quickly. Does anyone have suggestions for this deck build?

There are a number of good combos/win cons available. Test of Endurance and Felidar Sovereign are both easy. Thopter Foundry+Sword of the Meek+Ashnod's Altar works too. You can also play around with Deadeye Navigator+Palinchron for infinite mana. My personal favorite for 1v1 is to use something like Hinder to tuck their commander, then Tunnel Vision to mill them out.

There are many ways to win. There's the Bloodbond combo, the aforementioned Felidar Sovereign and Test of Endurance win conditions, there's gaining 45 life off of upkeep triggers with Sanguine Bond on the field, there's Debt to the Deathless+mana, Avacyn+Nevinyrral's Disk, Espeth 1.0+Nevinyrral's Disk, Avacyn punching people in the face, Karn Liberated ultimate, Lab Maniac+Enter the Infinite+Diviniation effect, etc., etc., etc.

My Oloro build uses Blood/Bond; Felidar Sovereign; Test of Endurance; Thopter Foundry combo with both Ashnod's Altar and Krark-Clan Ironworks for redundancy; and Beacon of Immortality with Vizkopa Guildmage as the win cons.

Well, a very simplistic combo would be Exsanguinate + Grand Architect + Pili-Pala . Literally an everyone lose situation. Or you could use Fascination, Blue Sun's Zenith or Prosperity to draw everyone out. Or draw yourself out while having a Laboratory Maniac on the field. Another very janky combo I've seen is Barren Glory + Kaervek's Spite or (if you have a infinite mana combo already which is really easy in WUB Maga, Traitor to Mortals + Near-Death Experience + Vedalken Orrery .

Gidgetimer I don't think Beacon of Immortality will work with Vizkopa Guildmage because you don't "gain life", it doubles the life total

Gatherer ruling on Beacon of Immortality:

7/15/2007: Beacon of Immortality's effect counts as life gain (or life loss, if the life total was negative) for effects that trigger on or replace life gain (or life loss).

It's what makes False Cure so damn cute either with it as "kill target player" or against it if it is causing havoc.

Ah, thanks for the clarification on that. I've never really desired the Beacon because of the wording on it.

Hope this doesn't sound too rude but honestly I'd suggest not building an Oloro deck. Even without your commander in play, people will hate you off the table because they'll see you gaining life every turn. I tried to run an Oloro deck for a while and the only non-durdle way to win is with infinite combos. If thats your thing then go for it but my playgroup is against them so I dropped trying to make it work.

Disagree. Oloro will draw some hate, but it really depends on the deck, and if your playcircle really hates Oloro that much, then just make Sharuum infinite combos and watch them beg for you to change it back.

Well I'm not too worried about hate anymore because I just remembered that one of the guys in the playgroup runs a land destruction deck, most notably Armageddon and a Strip Mine combo, so this might level the playing field.

If somebody in your group runs land destruction, just throw in a Crucible of Worlds. It'll definitely keep you ahead of the rest of the table.
