Fun Budget Commander decks!

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm looking at making another EDH deck and am just looking for ideas on making a competitive deck while on a budget. I've thought about using Krenko, Mob Boss as a commander to just make tons of goblins. What do you guys think? What are some super fun generals for a budget deck??? Thanks!!!

Tribal decks are pretty fun, stuff like Zombies (Grimgrin, Corpse-Born ) and Vampires(Anowon, the Ruin Sage & Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief ) are good examples, as well as the quintessential Slivers.

Combo decks can be pretty budget friendly, though they may not be the most acceptable depending on your meta.

One fun budget commander I've seen is Yeva, Nature's Herald and just play Draw-Go with ramp and big green creatures. End of turn Hydra Omnivore anyone?

Odric, Master Tactician makes a great general for a soldier deck and mono-white has some interesting cards even on a budget.

I have made a very good and effective budget deck with Karametra, God of Harvests . The only cards you have to include are: Genesis Hydra , Primal Surge , Planar Portal , Craterhoof Behemoth and Concordant Crossroads . Everything else is entirely optional in the deck, as long as it is a permanent.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed is another great commander that can be built on the cheap and works great with primal surge.

As with a lot of formats, cost increases are usually due to mana base complications. Therefore monocoloured and duocoloured decks tend to be the cheapest.

Selesnya tokens (Trostani, Selesnya's Voice or Karametra, God of Harvests ), white aggression (Odric, Master Tactician , Eight-and-a-Half-Tails ), green ramp (Azusa, Lost but Seeking , Omnath, Locus of Mana ) are all strong archetypes.

Monoblack is pretty bad because it can't deal with a lot of artifact and enchantment threats (because black can't).

Mono-red is fine but struggles late game - a single board clear ends most red strategies, and they can't do midrange as well as green or white creatures do midrange.

Monoblue is good but some counterspells can be pricy. It's also somewhat dull.

Monowhite is always a strategy in magic. It can deal with all permanent types, can be aggressive, and can play a late game strategy too.

Monogreen can play both aggressive and midrange-y and has limited options to deal with all permanent types. It's also quite strong.

Know your playgroup though - if board clear isn't a thing then weenie strategies like goblins or white weenie etc will be fine.

This is my version of Xenagos, God of Revels EDH: Xenegos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?". Since it is based on his abilities and isn't just G/R good stuff as most Xenagos lists I have seen are; it is super cheap. All you need are creatures with high power and something to give your guys evasion of some sort. Since toughness doesn't matter as much cards like Scorchwalker which are super cheap monetarily become great since it is basically a 10/6. Put a Primal Rage out and all of a sudden a weak card becomes a huge problem.

The most fun commander decks I've seen are either mono red with krenko because you have all the fun cards that screw up the game Such as Possibility Storm ,Mana Barbs,Warp World , Scrambleverse and a lot more. Another fun deck is a dual color r/u deck so you can add other fun cards like Perplexing Chimera and Master of Predicaments best thing is most of the time since the cards are awful in other formats you can pick them up pretty cheap.

I like the idea of Karametra, God of Harvests . What are must haves in an EDH like that?

I approve your Karametra choice :)

The main way is that you have a living ramp as a general and you need to make the best of it. Here is an example of a fun and successful Karametra deck:

Karametra, Primal Genesis

The only key thing in this deck is that you have to play 0 permanents to combo successfully with Primal Surge . The key cards are:

Concordant Crossroads - gives all your creatures after a primal surge haste.

Avenger of Zendikar - the best landfall creatures. The more creatures with landfall, though, the better.

Craterhoof Behemoth - gives all your dudes haste.

Genesis Wave - secondary combo + I do not like to just put my whole deck on the field.

Primal Surge - main combo.

Planar Portal - to find the primal surge.

Everything else is entirely optional. Of course, M15 will add the Genesis Hydra which is also a must.

The other way to play her is with a token swarm strategy, but this is a lot less exciting since Rhys the Redeemed does it better.
