Dominaria's Singluar Dinosaur + Accordion Update —April 29, 2018

Dominaria provided the one and only Territorial Allosaurus. A lovely 5/5 for 4 with a targeted removal option built right in. Good for getting rid of pesky creatures that have weak bodies, but provide big benefits - like Grand Abolisher. I managed to pick this guy up in Prerelease Promo Foil, and is a definite include. But what to cut? Lotus Cobra. It doesn't quite make the impact I would like for it to have, and quickly loses purpose toward the mid to late game. The Allosaurus however can remove a key combo piece and ruin someone's carefully laid out plans.

Additionally, a minor change to the page - I changed the font for the accordion, and added a song for browsing pleasure. Of course it's optional, and doesn't autoplay. That's a bad thing. Never Autoplay. Please give constructive feedback, as I'm always trying to refine the style I give each of my deck pages.

So I am trying to stay away from making another tribal deck, but I am also running a Zacama deck as well. Whereas you are going with tribal beat down and destruction, I seem to be going in a unique direction I guess. Not your typical Zacama deck apparently, but one that seems to be a threat and needs to be dealt with... so I guess that means its working lol. I do like a lot of what you have here even if it is a different direction. I noticed in one comment that you mentioned adding Odric, and I can say that he is a great addition. If you want to strive a bit away from flat tribal, add Craterhoof Behemoth that guy puts frowny faces on opponents when he comes out haha. Also, Paradox Engine has proved to be a huge top card in my deck. Having Zacama come out and having him untap BOTH lands and everything else is far too good.

Take a look at my deck and pop some suggestions. I would love to bounce some ideas with you and make Zacama the threat hes meant to be. Oh, and an up vote for you for sure!

All hail Zacama!!! :p

Check out my deck: Calamity is coming...

I take part of my comment back, your deck is not as tribal centered as I originally thought lol. Still the same great deck!

  • bushido_man96 While Food Chain is an awesome card, I just don't see it's usefulness. For that dollar amount it has to be a viable combo piece, but at best it's something of a "goodstuff" card in my opinion. What synergies do you see with Food Chain?

  • Onlytruereject, sorry for taking awhile to send a response. I'm lazy, and at times I just get preoccupied with other things. I have a spare Paradox Engine, but I don't see how it's worthwhile to include as it doesn't untap lands, and I don't quite have enough Mana rocks to justify it's use. I think i'll mosey on over to your deck page and see how you do things. Odric, Lunarch Marshal is pretty neat, but he's not a dinosaur. I want to keep as many dinos as possible in this deck. I know it's going to be slow, and relatively weak (or casual as some might say) but that's okay with me. I really just want it to work well, and be within theme.

LVL_666 I can understand the thoughts behind Paradox Engine Ive found that it works wonders in my deck, but I also run a lot of mana rocks and mana dorks. Im not running tribal and mostly likely never will with Zacama. I have my reasons, but thats not to say Dino tribal is a poor way to go, just not my thing. That being said, I can understand not wanting to add Odric for the non-Dino reason, so dont add him, but add Concerted Effort which does about the same as Odric except its an enchantment and wont pull away from your theme. Certainly take a look at my deck if you want some ideas. Its been a blast to play him and everyone finds him to be the biggest threat.

Onlytruereject i'll take that Concerted Effort, thank you for that. I had no idea it existed until you said something. Looking back at Odric, Lunarch Marshal I can see the obvious similarities, but also the minor differences between the two still make Concerted Effort a viable choice. Odric's indestructibility (When Zetalpa, Primal Dawn is in play) can easily be out maneuvered during a player's main phases...so I don't feel like i'm really missing out on that ability. Again, great suggestion!

Not a problem mate. I dont run it as I feel Odric is slightly better and offers a few other things that the enchantment dont, like haste. But its still pretty good still the same.

What about Mayael's Aria and Naya Charm

Agent_Fire, Mayael's Aria is pretty cool. I've actually never seen that card before. I definitely want to make room for it, but what should I cut? Naya Charm is also pretty cool as well I want to find a slot for that as well. Thanks for the awesome card suggestions. I'm almost finished constructing the deck, I just need to get my hands on a few more cards.

What about Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger for ramp, Lifecrafter's Bestiary for card draw, and Sword of the Animist for value along with Sun Titan, and lastly Rishkar's Expertise

Agent_Fire, thanks for even more suggestions. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger is something i'm considering...but he doesn't quite fit the aesthetic i'm going for regarding this deck. It's casual, and flavorful in regards to everything looking more jungle/ixalan themed/inspired. I'll consider Lifecrafter's Bestiary, what i'll do with it or how i'll make it work, i'm not so sure on though. Sun Titan seems like it'd be quite useful, as I do have alot of cmc 3 or less permanents in the deck. My only hang up, albeit minor is the card's overall aesthetic. It doesn't look like it'd fit within the jungles of ixalan. Maybe the Prerelease version might fit. Not sure. But the deck already has Rishkar's Expertise, that card is just awesome.

Agent_Fire, So the deck is nearly assembled. But I'm trying to figure out what to keep in the deck between Triumph of the Hordes and Mayael's Aria. I'll experiment between the two when the deck is fully assembled, as they both serve primarily as an alternate wincon, and rely on the presence of creatures.

Triumph of the Hordes too much spot removal for the other

Well, you throw the Triumph of hordes out and it could potentially be an instant win so long as you can deal at least 10 damage. Depending on the total power of all your creatures, you may be able to kill more than one opponent especially if you have Grand Abolisher our mo one can cast anything to stop the spell. The enchantment is cute, but it requires some working up to. Do you want to win by casting a card, or do you want to wait until your next upkeep to win providing you meet all the requirements and no one removes it?

Agent_Fire says... #16

You can shoot people with your commander after triumph to deal infect damage

March 16, 2018 4:10 p.m.

Agent_Fire Unfortunately thats not an option as Zacama cant target players. He has to kill by combat damage. So giving him infest does help quite a bit. I run a competitive Zacama deck as well wish I could target players, but Zacama is still a beast with or without that ability.

March 16, 2018 4:23 p.m.

LVL_666 Hey man, I recently made an awesome discovery that you need to include. Get yourself a Sword of Kaldra and slap it on Zacama. It basically creates a Path to Exile on a stick without the free mana for opponents. Every time Zacama does his 3 damage ability, it will Exile the targeted creature. Very good against indestructible creatures!

Swapping Caltrops for Conqueror's Flail would help against counterspell decks. Caltrops seems kinda weak in here, unless there is something Im missing, your big dinosaurs should be able to scare off any attackers that Caltrops would be useful against.

looks like he is using thee Caltrops for the enrage triggers on Polyraptor, Ripjaw Raptor and Trapjaw Tyrant

Sorry for the radio silence all, thanks for commenting Polupus and nsolarz...by the way, don't you owe me some feedback? :)

As for Caltrops, it's for what nsolarz pointed out earlier- it's meant to be used with the Enrage ability belonging to Polyraptor, Ripjaw Raptor, and Trapjaw Tyrant. Initially, I wanted to make it a sub-theme within the deck, but I haven't found any other dinos with that ability worth including. What do you two think about Siegehorn Ceratops and Ranging Raptors? Think they're worth including? What would you cut to include them?

@lvl_666, given that there are only a couple of cards out of the 99 that use the enrage trigger, Caltrops seems like a tough include. If you were going more heavy on the enrage, I'd think it might be worthwhile, but with so few cards to make use of it here, there is probably a better card for the slot.
