A Mono-Black () deck built around Rat Samurai and discard themes.

Have a few ideas to center around for this one.

  1. Rats
  2. Samurai
  3. Discard/"Rack"

The inspiration comes from a buddy in our playgroup (who at this time I think does not use Tappedout, we're gonna change that) telling me about the event that inspired him to play, and become a better duelist.

The Rack Attack

So in this match up I was using a Mono-Green Infect () against NoobNoob275 who had a Mardu Control () deck at the time.

The friend in question had a rakdos-colored deck () that also used discard for disruption and control.

On both of their turn 1, they aimed a Thoughtseize and a Duress at me, leaving me with no spells in hand going into my turn 1. I was defeated in the match up before even going through my phases, and had to concede.

Our friend in question quotes this moment as being one that defined magic for him, showing him how he wanted to be so powerful and to arise such a laugh out of all of us to have someone effectively knocked out before they could play a single turn.

My initial intention on building this deck is to construct it (and the sideboard included) for less than 100.00$ at TCG mid.°°

°°TCGplayer is where I do a majority of my shopping online and mid-rating is how I make most of my decisions for "budgeting".

So my intention is to capitalize on Rack themes and reliable bodies that make it impossible to have a hand, or mitigate your opponent's moves like a puppeteer.

How do we accomplish this on a budget?

  1. Instead of using Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek we use things like Duress and Divest.

  2. Instead of actually using The Rack and powerful staple pieces like Liliana of the Veil, we can use similarly-themed pieces that do work with the rest of our build. Things like Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion.

  3. A sub-theme of this deck is hand size reduction, a relatively small-explored archetype that is capitalized on by Gnat Miser and Locust Miser, who in turn help make the "Rack" themed elements of this deck shine.

During construction user evenable311 pointed out that the lack of artifact presence was undermining some synergies.

Despite using things like Virus Beetle and Leech Gauntlet, the need for a bigger presence with artifacts and providing a huge benefit needed to be a low-cost solution.

with this in mind we include Spellbook which was evenable311 initial recommendation and then Implement of Malice.

Initial construction was a huge success, and came in right underneath 60.00$ circa September 2022.

Other Options

There's a lot of space for things like the following

A few bigger budget options are noteworthy, but I believe this deck doesn't need to press the wallet in order to be cohesive, fun, and something capable of holding weight at the kitchen table.
