All BRAN, No Brakes

Not to be confused with Rasin Bran*

BRAN, named after such classics as Kellogg's All Bran, and the beloved Oat Bran. This mono-brown list is designed to bridge the aggro strategy of Phyrexian Dreadnought with the combo potential from Painter's Servant + Grindstone.

This list also includes a sideboard plan that leans into a prison style approach, with cards like Chalice of the Void and Lodestone Golem to compliment the main deck Sphere of Resistance and Wasteland.

The two main strategies of this list can be tutored with cards like Tezzeret, Cruel Captain, Urza's Saga, and Karn, the Great Creator, making it easy to have either or both combos available for times when you need to pivot between beatdown and comboing off.

Traditionally, Painter strategies struggle from the fact that almost any interaction can break up their combo. This list aims to negate that by applying significant pressure with its many "must answer" threats, forcing your opponent to run out their answers on your other cards and putting them in a spot where they either bolt the painter, or plow the dreadnought, and may not be able to do both. Cards like Sphere of Resistance also make it difficult to hold up counter magic, especially given the inclusion of Wasteland and the speed that this list can apply pressure (a turn 1 dreadnought or turn 2 painter combo is very common).

  • Dreadnaught:

Phyrexian Dreadnought + Torpor Orb OR The Mycosynth Gardens

  • Karn:

Kark Lock

Karn, the Great Creator + Liquimetal Coating OR Mycosynth Lattice

Resolve Dreadnought or Grindstone through Chalice with Karn

In situations where the game has progressed and you need to resolve a Phyrexian Dreadnought or Grindstone through Chalice of the Void, you can use Karn, the Great Creator to plus on Chalice and remove it from play as a 0/0 creature. Note that you can also access either of these cards through a chalice via tutoring with Urza's Saga, and removing chalice is usually a last resort since Chalice on one can protect your combo pieces from removal.

  • Stonecoil:

Drop a Steamy Stonecoil

Stonecoil Serpent + Painter's Servant

(naming any color not in your opponent's deck, protecting stonecoil from all but colorless threats).

  • Liquimetal Coating:

Liquimetal Coating is very versatile as not just a lock piece with Karn, the Great Creator, but can also be used with Urza's Saga and The Mycosynth Gardens. You can use Coating to make Saga into an artifact, then copy it with Gardens to get additional activations. Alternatively, in control or midrange matchups when games go long and resources become even more important, you can use Coating to turn Saga into an artifact and untap saga using Manifold Key to also gain additional activations (and if you ever assemble Key + Coating + Gardens + Saga then you're really doing it).
