The tribe I’d love to see viable in modern.... Vampires. A huge Thank You to YamishiTheWickedOne for all the help and guidance in getting this once pet deck up to something formidable.
Started off and was an aristocrat build that was fun and explosive, but needed a change. Playing on arena I built a historic version since that’s the closest to the modern format and was forced to make changes because of card availability or lack there of, it became more of a drain and gain build that once the proper pieces came together has worked shockingly well. So well that I’m giving it a go in a modern shell. If it doesn’t work, I can always go back to the aristocrat shell.
Bloodghast is coming back to see if it helps with the boardwipes due to it’s landfall ability. Has synergy with Sorin, Cordial, Conqueror, Ripper and Vito if 1 of or all are on the board.
Knight of the Ebon Legion is one of our 1 drops, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak. Late game for 3 (2B) he gets +3+3 & deathtouch until end of turn, becoming a removal spell and if 4 damage is done, he gets a permanent +1+1. Very underrated imo.
Cordial Vampire is very sneaky, the +1+1 he gives when a creature dies is when ANY creature dies, essentially becoming a lord only better.
Bloodthirsty Conqueror a new beater I’ve been testing on arena with good results. Has evasion, removal and a built in Exquisite Blood. Another Sorin target that works well with Vito, Ripper and others.
Vampire of the Dire Moon is a 1 drop with built in removal and lifelink, works great with Vito. Another card playtested on historic that has worked well, giving it a go in modern.
Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord gives us a lot of play out of this walker. His first +1 gives a creature a permanent +1+1 since we’re vampires. His second +1 is a Lightning Helix for black. His -3 lets us “cheat” Ripper or Conqueror out EARLY if on curve and put big pressure early.
Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose has great synergy with cards like sorin, cordial, dire moon, ripper & conquerer making the drain and gain heavier.
Vein Ripper another one tested on arena with solid results that acts like another Kalastria (or in historic her replacement) without the mana dedication, has evasion and built in removal A Sorin target, triggers Vito cordial, conqueror & artist and is a BEATER.
Viscera Seer one of the originals returns. Lets us sac (even itself) to scry 1, letting us dig for combo pieces or answers. Very useful and valuable.
Fatal Push for removal and works well with Cordial Vampire.
Thoughtseize for disruption.
Night's Whisper for card draw.
Agadeem's Awakening
can be a land if needed and to refill the board post board wipe. Included and tested at the suggestion of Skysurfer, good call and something I overlooked.
Diabolic Intent to tutor our combo pieces or a needed answer. Can play it by sacking Bloodghast to it and playing a land to bring it back or use Viscera Seer to pay the secondary cost.
Cavern of Souls blocking counter spells.
Castle Locthwain for card draw in the late game.
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth turns everything into swamps including our non basics without removing those lands abilities. Is the key piece to adding to the ramp combo with Cabal Coffers.
Cabal Coffers helps us play multiple things a turn and ramp more easily post board wipe. Classic combo with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.
Surgical Extraction for removal of key cards or pieces. Forms a great turn one play with Thoughtseize.
Nihil Spellbomb for graveyard hate and card draw.
Sheoldred's Edict for removal.
Pithing Needle to shut off abilities.
Inquisition of Kozilek for hand disruption.
