This is a deck that comes from my original Modern variant, in a new BG Standard variant! Sadly, no infinite combo this time. However, we get to shave blue and focus on doing things Golgari style! Plus, there's even more food involved. Mmmm, tastes like synergy! (and kitties.) The star of the deck is still Cauldron Familiar, but now we're getting a little more flavorful and acting like witches. Nyeeeeh hee hee hee!
Here we use a lot of food, so a playset of Trail of Crumbs is necessary. When your little pretty Cauldron Familiar gets hungry, you want it to come back to eat, right? So here we get to use Trail of Crumbs to get a LOT of card advantage in this deck. Each time you do sacrifice a food nets you a permanent from the top two cards of your library for just one mana. Working in tandem with cards like Cauldron Familiar, we have Witch's Oven which helps make mince meat out of our ca--enemies. This is our primary card advantage engine, but that's not all we've got!
Next, we have yet another new aristocrats style card to play with our cats in a very synergistic way, Ayara, First of Locthwain. What's neat is that this one works on ETB effects, not death triggers. Not only that, they help turn other black creatures you control into extra cards, which in turn triggers Vindictive Vampire for more life draining effects. Nice! Want to spice things up? I just added 2x Deathless Knight to the deck, which make for immediate threats, and do just about everything that this deck wants/needs--fast, strong attackers, recursion with life gain from our creature effects and food tokens, extended card value, etc. It's kind of like our bigger, jankier cats in a strange way. Let's spend those 9+ lives!
Now, how would you improve this deck? I would LOVE to include some of the pricier cards like Murderous Rider or Once Upon a Time, but this is simply out of my budget range. This also works best using permanents so things like Trail of Crumbs and Bond of Flourishing can work consistently.
