Is "Hexproof from Black" still Hexproof?

Asked by RedUndead40 4 years ago

If I have a Knight of Grace in my grave, and then cast Kathril, Aspect Warper, does he enter with a "Hexproof from Black" counter or nothing at all?

702.11d “Hexproof from [quality]” is a variant of the hexproof ability. “Hexproof from [quality]” on a permanent means “This permanent can’t be the target of [quality] spells your opponents control or abilities your opponents control from [quality] sources.” A “hexproof from [quality]” ability is a hexproof ability.

702.11e ...Any effect that looks for a card with hexproof will find a card with a “hexproof from [quality]” ability.

"Hexproof from {Quality} is a form of hexproof and therefore subject to any and all interactions as the regular "Hexproof" would be, meaning that if an effect looks for that, it will find that specific variant of hexproof and use it.

Here is an additional ruling from the gatherer page for Odric, Lunarch Marshal, which has a similar ability but same principle:

1/24/2020 If one of those creatures has one or more variants of the listed keywords (for example, hexproof from white), creatures you control gain those specific variants.

Note how Kathril is worded. It is looking for a creature card with hexproof, which it finds in the case of Knight of Grace, but Kathril only says to put a hexproof counter on a creature if that condition is meant. So, your choice of creature would get a hexproof counter, not a hexproof from black counter.

Tylord2894 That's what I would have thought... but the Gatherer rulings say that it will actually give a Hexproof from black counter. I'm unclear on why it would work that way. I've asked a question here: https://boardgames.stackexchange.com/questions/51720/why-would-kathril-aspect-warpers-ability-grant-multiple-hexproof-counters

GendoIkari_82, that's a good point. When I wrote that response, that Gatherer ruling was not up. I have a personal policy to never take a Gatherer ruling at face value and to understand the "why" behind it (rulings on the Gatherer are rarely updated passed the card's initial release). I did some digging and asked some fellow judges for help because (frankly) I didn't know what was going on. There is a rule (sited below) that I didn't see that explains why you would put a "Hexproof from [quality]" counter on Kathril.

That said, I am still on the opinion that wording is not particularly clear.

Hope this helps!!

702.1c An effect may state that “the same is true for” a list of keyword abilities or similar. If one of those keyword abilities has variants or variables and the effect grants that keyword or counters of that keyword to one or more objects and/or players, it grants each appropriate variant and variable of that keyword.
