Lifelink/doublestrike/trample on blocking

Asked by Monopoly1307 2 years ago

So I have a Kathril, Aspect Warper on the board with all its keywords.

Flying, Reach, Deathtouch, Lifelink, Trample, Menace, First Strike, Doublestrike, Indestructible, Hexproof, Vigilance

It is a 14/14. So if my opponent attacks me with a 4/4 lets say and I block with Kathril, im not sure exactly how the interaction would work with my blocker having trample, lifelink, doublestrike, and even deathtouch involved.

Would I get only the 14 life off of lifelink? or would the doublestrike still trigger because of trample even though the blocker is dead and give me 28 life?

I couldn't find an answer for this anywhere, any help would be greatly aprreciated thanks.

You would only gain the 14 life.

Between first strike and regular strike there is a period of priority, where players can cast spells, if desired. Because of this priority, state based actions will be checked.

The game will see that the 4/4 has taken more than 4 damage (and, presumably, doesn't have indestructible itself), and will move the 4/4 to the graveyard.

Because it is no longer on the battlefield, when regular strike damage happens, your Kathril has nothing to hit, so it doesn't do any damage, and you don't gain any life. (If you were attacking, that damage would be dealt to your opponent, but since you're blocking, it just goes nowhere)

Minor note: While Kathril is attacking, the damage that it would deal in the regular damage step (after the first strike damage kills its blocker) is only dealt to the defending player because Kathril has trample. If it didn't, then like when Kathril is blocking, its next chunk of 14 damage has nowhere to go.
