Rune of the Gibbous Moon

Enchantment

At the beginning of your endstep, draw a card and lose 1 life. Then, if you control there are cards named Festering Newt, Bogbrew Witch, and Bubbling Cauldron among permanents you control and/or in your graveyard, you may sacrifice Rune of the Gibbous Moon. If you do, search your library for a card and put that card into your hand.

"The newt was dead, the cauldron was bubbling, and the witch stood ready. All she needed was the moon"

Hopefully this card is worded correctly lol

I think your bogbrew combo is going to be pretty hard to fine-tune for a few big reasons:

  • Each of the 3 combo pieces do almost nothing on their own, making each of them effectively useless on their own.

  • Part of the combo involves you casting a 4-mana creature (Bogbrew Witch). 4cmc is generally steep by modern-standards, and will likely make your plan super-slow to execute (especially as you’re likely to need this 4cmc card in play to start finding/assembling the rest of the combo).

  • Practically all existing 3-card combos at the moment win the game on the spot, once assembled. This combo doesn’t win the game immediately, and instead gives your opponent multiple turns to find an answer to it.

I would suggest if you wanted to keep close to this theme, swapping this combo out for Witch's Oven and Cauldron Familiar. The effect ends up being similar, while being much easier to execute & assemble. It also allows you to run more control cards so you can keep your opponent from doing anything.

Looks fun! I like building around Bogbrew Witch and her posse, since they're such unusual effects in Magic. Plus, wearing your opponent down by sacrificing stuff is also pretty fun - it's like winning by remote control. Having said that, I can think of a few ways you might be able to improve this build!

Witch of the Moors is a very cool way to bring stuff back, but since you only have a couple and she's a lot of mana... well, you probably can't always rely on her. Since you're running lots of ways to sacrifice guys, it might be wise to invest in little critters who can bring themselves back! Reassembling Skeleton, Persistent Specimen and Gutterbones are all solid examples, though depending on your budget, Bloodghast and Nether Traitor are probably upgrades.

Since you're trying to wear your opponent down via sacrificing little critters, there are a number of ways to ensure it happens at a good pace - Bastion of Remembrance, Zulaport Cutthroat and Blood Artist are all classic options!

You might also prefer Vampiric Rites to Witch's Cauldron. The flavour isn't quite as appropriate, but being able to use it multiple times in one turn is bound to come up at some point. Enchantments usually seem to get blown up less frequently than artifacts in my experience, too!

Bogbrew Witch Festering Newt and Bubbling Cauldron are loads of fun. I play with Lingering Souls, Elixir of Immortality, and Angelic Accord.

Those cards you already mention sound like they would be awesome in a bogbrew deck.

Jar of Eyeballs and Brain in a Jar are also spooky fun.

Good build, lots of synergies. I really like the theme of this deck.

Unfortunately, Havengul Lich doesn’t work the way you’ve suggested in your description. None of your creatures have flash, so unless you otherwise enable them to have it you would not be permitted to cast them during your opponent’s turns. Bogbrew Witch’s activated ability, on the other hand, would be possible during the opponent’s turn. “Cast” is technically different than “put it onto the battlefield”.

Also, Lifeline is not Modern legal. If you switched formats to Legacy or perhaps Vintage, then you’re good.

Foxes are elusive scavengers or predators. They are shy, seldom seen, but opportunistic.

Shy Fox (g/w) How do you do hybrid mana?

Challenge: This is a multi-part challenge for more than one contributor. Part 1: Create a permanent card that searches for a card by name after some kind of condition is met. The card you're designing is one part of a two or three-part combo. Don't design the card being searched for, but instead let that be Part 2 of this challenge, to be done by someone else. You may add whatever you like to the conditions of Part 2, and you can even give that card a name because your artifact refers to it by name.

Inspiration for this comes from Bubbling Cauldron, Festering Newt, and Bogbrew Witch, or Sword of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, and Helm of Kaldra, or Renowned Weaponsmith with Vial of Dragonfire and Heart-Piercer Bow.

Brutal_B Don't judge Yawg too harshly, that's Bogbrew Witch after the baby. Should have seen her back in high school, she was a much more Tempting Witch
