What's your favorite set ever released in Magic the Gathering?

Now, I know that this discussion may have been had already in the past, but I'm just curious as to what others in the Magic community feel about the topic. Also, what I mean by "favorite set" has nothing to do with the rarity of the set, but rather, which set did/do you have the most fun with. Now, "fun" can be whatever it means to you (flavor, 'feel,' atmosphere, mechanics, etc.).

My favorite happens to be Onslaught. What's yours?

Return to Ravnica. Lots of power, great flavor, nice draft environment, and cool mechanics. I began playing Magic during this block and it remains one of my favorites.

In a newer set, Rise of the Eldrazi because Annihilator rocks. The leveling mechanic sucked, though. This being the set that I re-entered competitve play.

Ice Age was a blast to play during, as there was tons of flavor and interesting mechanics. The Dark, Legends, and Antiquities were also fun, but I saw the tail end of those sets.

Its a three way tie. Ravnica: City of Guilds, since that was a set that I came into after a looooong break, so it was a game changer for me.

Tempest: Lots of color hate. Loved it.

Innistrad: Another set that I "returned to the game" with. Liliana of the Veil was the first time I encountered a Planeswalker. And I opened her. Whoa.

Well, Khans of Tarkir was my first set. So it gave me my first taste of Magic. Combine that with the fact that Fate Reforged was my first Pre-Release, it got me pumped to use dragon cards. Mix those two together, and it makes Dragons of Tarkir of my favorite set. Tons of amazing dragon cards and getting to experiment with a ton of different playstyles. Plus... Ugin's story captivated me. Always wanted to build a 5-Color Dragon Deck in Standard, but it was too complicated.

Out of sets that i've played with, i'd have to say that Dragon's Maze is the most iconic and fun set i've played. Unflinching Courage and Ethereal Armor on a Loxodon Smiter backed up by Voice of Resurgence was just unbeatable back then.

However, if I were to be able to pick a set to be released tomorrow, it would be Scars of Mirrodin. I didn't quite realize it back when it came out, but it was just the best set that's ever been in print for me. Just... Artifacts. Ys plz.

Original innistrad was my favorite set. Plenty of good cards, and extremely flavorful. I have high hopes for shadows, but I doubt the will top original innistrad.

Mercadian Masques!

I'm definitely an avid drafter, so Conspiracy was, I think, my favorite set. I enjoyed the "draft matters" cards, and the fact there were quite a bit of eternal playables.

Defenitely Urza's Saga for me. I still remember opening a Sneak Attack, knowing that it was something special :-)

Hey 8vomit, what do you think we'll see out of Jace and Liliana for this Innistrad? Just right or OP'ed and game breaking?

I'm right there with PartyJ, Urza's Saga was when I really got into the game after fiddling around with it for a bit. I had a multi colored Sneak Attack deck that wrecked house.. as for newer sets I think Innistrad was good, looking forward to the upcoming return

The original Zendikar block. The whole adventure/exploration theme of the world intrigued me, and landfall has easily become one of my favorite mechanics.

The Urza block was broken! Lots of sick cards in that block.

Probably odyssey for due to nostalgia, squirrels, and the story of course. Though in recent sets I actually really liked Dragons of Tarkir. Alot of strong and fun cards for constructed in that set (especially for commander).

Innistrad all day man. Rakdos vampires was the most fun I've ever had in standard, the lore was amazing, the fool moon event was fun as hell, and it was the first time I'd ever seen a competitive mardu deck.

Innistrad baby

I'd probably say either Innistrad for the great flavor and drafting, or Conspiracy for being the best draft set ever.

Also if it counts, I would happily include Commander 2011 in here, since they were the best precons released to date.

Ravnica and Innistrad because of the flavors they have, but I did really like Battle for Zendikar. Awaken was a cool mechanic, and Allies have always been a fun creature type to play with.

Old: The Dark.

New: Innistrad.

After a 10-year hiatus, my girlfriend got me back into the game during the Scars of Mirrodin block. She started during the Alara block.

She loves the colorful bubbly Alara cards, and we both love the flavor that Innistrad had... but my favorite would have to be Return to Ravnica.

I'm a huge fan of multicolored cards; where flavor and power blend. My friends and I drafted a ton of that whole block. I remember taking 2nd one draft with a sweet mardu deck that included 3x Viashino Firstblade. So fun

It's a tie between Shards of Alara and Khans of Tarkir.

I liked some of the cards from Shards better, but I liked the flavor from Khans much more. I'm a huge fan of multicolor cards (I've got a deck for each shard/wedge), and those sets were some of the best for tricolor cards.

I wish we'd get another tricolor set soon actually lol.

Nothing comes close to Time Spiral for me. I got serious about the game around then and it was like the perfect place for me to jump in, with all the nods to other magic sets, it got me so interested so fast. It will forever have a spot in my heart. So much so that I build a time spiral block cube xD!

My favourite block is Zendikar, though my favourite set is Commander 2011. I realize C11 isn't part of the ZEN block, but none of the three sets from ZEN has as many cards as C11 does that I use regularly.

February 23, 2016 12:52 a.m.

Gotta go with Legends. It was one of the last sets I was around for before I took my hiatus from Magic until Shadowmoor. The set itself was just so flavorful. I mean, come on. Legends? Now, Legendaries are a dime a dozen, and they're more hypu than ever thanks to Best Format- I mean, Commander- but back in the day, a set largely composed of Legends was just insane. It paved the way for one of my absolute favorite blocks, Kamigawa, another very heavy Legend-laden block.

Though I will give honorable mention to my favorite Modern set, Innistrad. Gothic horror is kind of my jazz, and a whole set themed around it? Plus zombies, pretty much my favorite thing ever? And flip cards? Oh baby, sign me up! ;)

Mirrodin. I LOVED Mirrodin. The synergy among the commons was so good that a budget player could build a fabulous casual deck with nothing but commons just from that set. Buying a pack of Mirrodin meant for me that I was bound to get useful commons like,

Thoughtcast
Seat of the Synod
Great Furnace
Ancient Den
Vault of Whispers
Tree of Tales
Disciple of the Vault
Leonin Elder
Somber Hoverguard
Welding Jar
Tooth of Chiss-Goria
Scale of Chiss-Goria
Frogmite
Myr Enforcer

This is in addition to the mana-producing myr creatures and Ornithopter, which showed up as an uncommon in the set. It was just nuts! Mirrodin packs gave enormous value, value I have never seen since.
