Custom Card Deck Collaboration

Custom Cards forum

Posted on June 13, 2015, 1:07 a.m. by SirFowler

Hello everyone. I wanted to create a forum where your mind can be turned into reality. Here, you can create custom cards. If you create well enough cards, I will make them in to a custom made deck!

How does that sound? To make a deck to be seen by many just based on your ideas alone. Sounds pretty good to me.

Now, to start things off, I will create a card as a jumping off point. It's only a suggestion, so if you like it, then suggest sultai related cards. If you want to create another set of cards not even related, that's great too. All suggestions are welcome.

Anyway, here's my first card to throw into the ring.

Now, if you don't know how to create cards or just aren't good at it, I'll be to create them for you. Once we post enough suggestions, I'll create a custom deck/decks based on the cards created.

Now remember, these cards have to be balanced, so no ridiculously overpowered cards. We don't want to make WotC too jealous now. ;)

If you want to see the deck, follow here:

From the Minds of the Magic Community

I saw this on your page. it sure is interesting. just like you. you're interesting. I'd like to get to know you better. no homo. unless you're into that, in which case, aaannd I'm reading my comment and its horrible goodbye!

Sorry, I'm not, but thank you for the comment. :)

Do you have any custom cards that could be made into an actual custom card deck? If we get enough people to create custom cards, we could build a deck around them. It would be an amazing collaboration project.

June 13, 2015 1:17 a.m.

do you know how many custom cards I've made? well, neither do I. I can dig them up if you want, but they arent in card format, just words. xcept for one that famous helped with.

Do you know about mtgcardsmith? You are able to put your thoughts into reality. That's how I created the cards on my profile.

June 13, 2015 1:22 a.m.

I do, but I suck and dont do it.

June 13, 2015 1:23 a.m.

SirFowler says... #7

If you send me ideas, I'll create them so we could build a custom made deck based on them.

June 13, 2015 1:25 a.m.

okay. not sure if ill be able to find all of them.

June 13, 2015 1:25 a.m.

Cool beans.

June 13, 2015 1:26 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #10

It's nearly strictly better than alesha which is bad i think. Perhaps they enter tapped?

June 13, 2015 1:31 a.m.

SirFowler says... #12

You might have a good point VampireArmy. It's basically an OP Sun Titan. I'll see about changing it so it'd be a little more balanced.

For some reason I have a hard time viewing it. Did you publish the card? Or did you just want me to create a card based on your ideas?

June 13, 2015 1:55 a.m.

I did. one sec. http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/same-yet-different#.VXvE1M9VhBd

as for the others, no. I'm lame and didnt bother.

Oh I love this card!

It's like a Alesha, Who Smiles at Death that's more playable! First it has immediate impact as a blocker. pretty great for a card that gets back Tarmogoyf or Snapcaster Mage. Second it doesn't require an activation on top of the triggered ability! Great for saving mana to Abrupt Decay something in your way!

Super awesome!

June 13, 2015 2:04 a.m.

kengiczar says... #18

Um, why would you make the original card you posted worse? It's still killable by everthing except Doom Blade, still worthless in the face of cards like Rest in Peace, Leyline of the Void, Nihil Spellbomb can be activatged in response to any of it's triggers, as can Relic of Progenitus, it fails to every counterspell.

And don't give me that garbage talk about "Not everybody has removal" because there are only two kinds of decks in serious Modern, Legacy and Vintage play: Decks that do what they do so well that they don't need removal (like Modern Tron) or decks that are all about messing up your opponent (Modern Cruel Control, the old Counterbalance deck for Legacy, Legacy lands etc.) Any other deck falls between the spectrum and any of them that see tournament play and do well have 12+ removal options total in their 75, except for maybe Storm which again, doesn't care about this card because it's proactive.

The card needs to be better than Alesha, Who Smiles at Death because Alesha is just a bad card.

Sorry if this sounds mean, I just hate it when I see people rating cards as to OP because 9 times out of 10 they end up taking the card down so much that it's only good in draft. I've seen entire custom sets nuked to below draft levels. People if you're going to spend time making mock cards (don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite things) then maybe make sure that people are excited about the cards?

June 13, 2015 2:12 a.m.

SirFowler says... #19

That's actually very true. The original card was this

Double strike, deathtouch

When Artorias, Spirit of the Abyss enters the battlefield or attacks, return target creature from your graveyard onto the battlefield.

3/2

So I would say I found a better balance than what was originally developed.

June 13, 2015 2:22 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #20

It's called balancing. The card is already literally twice as good as alesha due to having green and blue in it's cost. Green has the cheapest, most efficient creatures In the game in terms of power while blue has the best disruptive spells. Think past the text of the card and look into the implications of everything it can and can't do. I don't mean to be rude but your comment is not very well thought out at all.

June 13, 2015 2:23 a.m.

you ARENT WELL THOught out.

June 13, 2015 2:27 a.m.

kengiczar says... #22

I understand the impact this would have in Modern, and I also understand that it would just take 1 or 2 cards in a Cruel Control deck to wreck it.

Admittedly I don't play Legacy or Vintage but the fact remains as long as it can only get creatures CMC 2 back then you're looking at a card that will end up recurring Snapcaster Mage, Tarmogoyf and Scavenging Ooze. Hence why I mentioned all those graveyard hating cards. MTG already has the tools to deal with this. It's called adapting.

And being twice as good as Alesha isn't hard at all.

June 13, 2015 2:29 a.m.

kengiczar says... #23

@ SirFowler Oh I didn't realize this was the modified version. Ok yeah this modified version is powerful and just slightly above the level I design at. Giving it double strike to might be a bit much _

June 13, 2015 2:36 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #24

Being 3 mana and 2/2 with no natural protection so it would not see play in legacy which is fine. Not many cards do for good reason but your idea that balancing cards is a bad thing is incorrect. If you wanna go full derp and make op cards that no one wants to play against, that's fine but as far as i was aware, we're talking about making fair cards here.

June 13, 2015 2:37 a.m.

@va weAERE?

June 13, 2015 2:40 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #26

Derpling: for reference the comment in my post about going full Derp wasn't actually about you. More of the verp "Derp"

June 13, 2015 2:41 a.m.

SirFowler says... #27

Thing the I wanted to do was create a deck made up of custom cards, not cards that currently exist, so cards like Abrupt Decay or Tarmagoyf don't exist in this scenario.

But if this were to become an actual card, magic is balanced enough to create any form of possibilities to which anything could happen.

Also, I just thought of something. If I were to have 2 of these in the graveyard and cast one, I could create an infinite loop, with some sort of etb effect like Warstorm Surge. What are your thoughts on this? Is creating a combo in of itself too OP? Or is it still balanced enough?

June 13, 2015 2:42 a.m. Edited.

UHokattgebm uts ijay.

I tried to type with my eyes closed. I said "oh. its okay"

June 13, 2015 2:43 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #29

The 2/2 doesn't make a loop but the other one does. That is extremely broken no matter what lol

Turns Any dies/etb trigger into gg but meh. That's technically a 3 card combo. I imagine if dredge had it, it would annihilate

June 13, 2015 2:46 a.m.

SirFowler says... #30

Wow, I can't believe I messed up on my OWN card XD

Wow, brain farts goin' on here

June 13, 2015 2:48 a.m.

kengiczar says... #31

@ Vampire Army did you read any of my posts? You suggest that I'm an advocate of making OP cards.... I stated numerous ways to stop this guy from getting out of hand. In-case you missed it here they are again:

Leyline of the Void - Great sideboard card for Vintage.
Nihil Spellbomb - Played in any serious artifact deck.
Rest in Piece - Death and Taxes sideboard material.
Relic of Progenitus - Played in Tron in modern lists.

And here's some more:
Anger of the Gods - Played in various modern builds.
Scavenging Ooze - Side/main-board material in Abzan/Jund, Modern.
Anafenza, the Foremost - Sideboard/Main hoser for Abzan CoCo combo.
Angel of Finality - Played in some Jeskai sideboards in Modern, espceially along Restoration Angel.
Bojuka Bog - Played as poor man's Leyline of the Void or in conjuntion with Crop Rotation.
Tormod's Crypt - Like Relic of Progenitus, can play with Trinket Mage
Surgical Extraction - Not the best but it does what it's supposed to do.
Grafdigger's Cage - Oh look it makes an entire reanimate deck garbage if their creatures enter from the graveyard. Also hoses Chord of Calling and Collected Company. Also fetchable with Trinket Mage if you're artifact dedicated..

So those are just some of the more popular options when a graveyard deck rears it's head in Modern. There are also already numerous draft-esque common/uncommons to deal with the guy. I don't like making cards that are OP but I do like designing powerful cards that can be dealt with.

When designing creatures I don't make anything that requires me to invent a new answer. In other words I create questions that have already been answered. Cards that are fair.

Alrighty then, the problem is resolved. I just want to end this before it goes any further.

Anybody have custom cards to add to the collaboration? Sagarys, seuvius, hound829 NoviceMagician, freakman13, Somnambulist, ngr227, FAMOUSWATERMELON, InDirectX, 6tennis

(I'm just calling my homies for now to start the brainstorm)

June 13, 2015 3:21 a.m. Edited.

@SirFowler if you have time, review the listed thread's cards and take the ones you want, like that AWESOME black one.

June 13, 2015 3:22 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #35

I get where you're coming From. The original post had something to do with tiny leaders so that's where my original comment was based upon.

The op card is fairly balanced honestly. i was coming at it from the "this can really make a dredge type tiny leader deck out of hand.

June 13, 2015 3:23 a.m.
June 13, 2015 3:30 a.m.

SirFowler says... #37

I originally made him for Tiny Leaders material, but now I want to create multiple custom cards. I wonder if I could create a new format using some sort of weird rules like when unglued and unhinged came out.

Hmm....

June 13, 2015 3:32 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #38

On another note: i had a card idea

Name: g

Beast

Multikicker gg

Trample Enters with x +1 counters for each time it was kicked

Requires 1 extra blocker for each time it was kicked

1/1

June 13, 2015 3:32 a.m. Edited.

SirFowler says... #39

I like it. Seems pretty balanced to where it can't get out of hand too quickly, but is powerful enough late game.

How about a slight tweak?

Beast

Multikicker

Then the rest of the text is the same, but as a 2/2

June 13, 2015 3:37 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #40

Why black? The card feels just very green to me but unless it's like a hoard of zombie beasts i don't see black making sense:p. You can do that though

June 13, 2015 3:39 a.m.

SirFowler says... #41

@DERPLINGSUPREME I really like the card you made. I think I'll add it to the list.

Edit: Not sure. I like it though. I'll add it to the list of possibilities.

June 13, 2015 3:44 a.m. Edited.

kengiczar says... #42

Requireing extra blockers is sort of like Menace, almost as if the kicker gave it "Menace X" or something.Compared to old cards though requiring extra blockers is more of a red thing. Trample is green. What is the inspiration for this card? Is it some form of Thragtusk, a Zombie, or just some big Golgari swampy abomination? Part tree or all nightmare?

Anyway word it like this:

"Multi-kicker (You may pay an aditional any number of times as you cast this spell.)

This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each time it was kicked."

See Everflowing Chalice for reference.

June 13, 2015 3:48 a.m.

kengiczar says... #43

@ VampireArmy: My bad like this:

"Multikicker (You may pay an additional any number of times as you cast this spell.)

This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each time it was kicked.

This creature must be blocked by an additional creature for each time it was kicked."

June 13, 2015 3:50 a.m.

No need to link me to the forum, I'm subscribed :)

Anyhow, very cool. I find it too be extremely powerful in the right decks (dredge anybody?), but I've seen worse. Also, I'll happily make cards for people using MSE, which looks ages better than Cardsmith :)

June 13, 2015 7:46 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #45

The card actually came from

Gnarlid Pack one of my favorite creatures from my first decks in mtg

June 13, 2015 7:53 a.m.

Dis?

2b. Some name

When "" enters the battlefield, draw a card

Sacrifice "" at the beggenning of your next upkeep

2/2

June 13, 2015 8:27 a.m.

So basically a three-mana cantrip?

June 13, 2015 8:27 a.m. Edited.

Coinman1863 says... #49

BB. Altar of Erebos (or any other upper being that you sac stuff to)

Artifact

At the beginning of your upkeep you may sac a creature. If you do draw a card. If you do not, discard a card.

I'm currently still working on the "if you don't sac" clause, but it might be fine right now, I not sure. Currently I think the flavor is right on where if you don't sac something to the altar, you have to pay in your own blood.
