Not to be pushy or seem like I'm flaming, but what is your deck trying to accomplish? I see a lot of good cards, but not necessarily a win-con, is this based off of cards you own? If so, a grixis deck that revolves around spells could use some Goblin Electromancer and some Pillar of Flame , other quick burn, ect. What I've found to be useful in three color decks is focus on one of the colors being your main focus and augmenting it with the other two. Some other good tempo you could use, as I saw you had a few cards is Thought Scour . Sorry for the wall man, but I hope you take the criticism constructively, I think you have the potential to make a great Grixis Deck! it just needs a focus is all.

I'd personally drop the 1 Talrand, Sky Summoner . The reason is why is that you're hoping for a useful point where that card would actually would become what you imagined and maybe "flood" the field with the amount of sorcery/instances you're running. I've ran 2 and up to a playset and many times it just comes out to be a dead card, or at the most part you're panicking to get tokens out so you can buy time.

With Grixis Control decks now a days, you're really just trying to get through your deck in order to find bombs (EI:Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker ). The best way to do so is just get draw cards in order to dig for answers. Best draw card out right now personally is Think Twice , especially when that flashback comes into play it will make a difference. You also might want to invest in Underworld Connections for draw speed.

One last thing, I only run 2 Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and a playset of Vampire Nighthawk . I've debated between the Nighthawks over the Augur of Bolas 's because the actual probably to hit a sorcery/instant with Augar is when you have 23+ sorcery/instances. Great card to dig, don't get me wrong; but I suggest you have one or the other. It just so happened that Nighthawk is too good of a card via block/attack and just overall board presence.

+1 for trying Grix. (:

Magmaquake instead of Rolling Temblor in the sideboard. I also think Pillar of Flame needs a place in the mainboard or sideboard.

+1 The deck looks great. I've created something similar and I have blast playing it.

consider Olivia Voldaren in the mainboard, it's crazy once it comes out..

when running vampire nighthawk you need boosts. With forbidden alchemy you can get instants/sorceries into the graveyard, use Rune-chanter's Pike and swing for a lot, gain a lot( That races thragtusk/ geist of saint traft) To do that you would need either thought scours or more forbidden alchemy. That way you can race aggro decks, red deck wins and even zombies. ( It can kill thunder maw. You're deck would win early and late game.

Took a look at ur deck... similar to what I was trying to build 4 the last few months.... Lands are good, maybe 4 Evolving Wilds , I'd drop the Rakdos Keyrune and put in 2 Chromatic Lantern , I'd drop Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and put in Olivia Voldaren like law77 said. Mainboard 3 or 4 Dissipate and add 2Dreadbore and I'd say your'e good.

@ zealotroar I don't think the Evolving Wilds are necessary, I seldomly find my self in the need of mana fixing with the taplands.@ FROZR2 Why? When the board state gets out of hand, Mizzium Mortars will only do so much. Mabey a suggestion for a replacement?

Sever the Bloodline is amazing in Grixis to deal with tokens for example.

And you might want to look at maybe sideboarding a boardwipe or two? Blasphemous Act would be my suggestion.

Thank you for your input! I haven't tested it yet, but I'm almost certain that I have enough boardwipe without Blasphemous Act . I'll add some Sever the Bloodline s to the sideboard for token decks.

Stromkirk Noble just for the hell of it

Never thought of that. I'll keep it in mind thanks!

Stromkirk Noble could be a funny sideboard plan...

For reals though - add some number of Chromatic Lantern s, the mana requirements here are very demanding.

"My budget is about 100-200$...", Is this your total budget that you have for the deck or for the changes that you want to invest in?

Snapcaster Mage may be very important for card advantage but they are a little pricey.

Dreadbore is also a little slow at sorcery speed and may be better to have in the sideboard. Currently you have both Searing Spear and Mizzium Mortars in your two CMC slot so maybe trying Tragic Slip or Tribute to Hunger would be better options.

I would suggest adding Rakdos Keyrune in place of guilded lotus. maybe 3 of or something. Rakdos Keyrune can be a really efficient creature as well as mana ramp, while Gilded Lotus is your turn 5 move that leaves you very vulnerable to whatever they put down on turn 5, say Thragtusk . Sure it's a great card when trying for Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker , but it does absolutly nothing otherwise. The keyrune can kill thragtusk, it's token, and every other creature with toughness 3 or less because of first strike, assuming they don't have first strike also.

Falkenrath Aristocrat is great in these decks, always a surprise. Olivia Voldaren could be fun aswell. Havengul Lich is awesome if you have Gilded Lotus as you can get their creatures from the graveyard regardless of what color they are.

I wouldn't recommend using Stromkirk Noble , Falkenrath Aristocrat , or Havengul Lich . The first two are poor in a control strategy, and the Lich is too conditional to be reliably effective in this deck. On the other hand, Gilded Lotus is great, and I'd also pitch Rolling Temblor as a pretty good counter-aggro card. If it doesn't kill your opponent's entire field, it will take out a few at least and limit your opponent's options on a subsequent Tribute to Hunger and activate Tragic Slip if you want to go that way. Someone recommended Snapcaster Mage , if that's in your price range it's worth putting in 3 if you maintain a count of 24 legal targets (I'd go down to 2 Snapcasters if your target count dips below 22).

I'd cut 1 Desolate Lighthouse and a Mountain and throw in a pair of Evolving Wilds . With Dreadbore , Vampire Nighthawk , and Dissipate , you're going to need to be able to fix your mana very early and you don't want a Lighthouse in your opening hand.

Thank you so much for the advice! What would you recommend switching out for the Rolling Temblor s?

January 23, 2013 3:47 p.m.

steelydanno says... #21

Well, it'll depend on how heavily aggro your scene is. If it's as heavy as you think, you might want to go even further and put in Magmaquake (I'd probably sub those in for card:Devil's Play).

Have your maindeck ready to crush any quick aggro and have your sideboard prepared to retool for midrange and control matchups (side note, she's a little pricey but Olivia Voldaren is great against both aggro and midrange. Worth subbing in for Niv-Mizzet if you can get her). That means counterspells, spot removal Ultimate Price will come in handy and might even be worth maindecking, and alternate win conditions (Nephalia Drownyard will be your ideal way to win vs. control).

All of this will depend on what you expect to come up against each week. If aggro becomes weak, put the Temblors in the sideboard and bring in something more appropriate.

So nice I had to say it twice, apparently...

DJGoldFish says... #24

Pretty sure my local meta has mostly Aggro > Midrange > Control > Combo. I was thinking about Magmaquake and Olivia Voldaren Though I don't own any coppies I will keep them in mind for the future. I did not even think about Ultimate Price I'll most likely add that to main and sideboard the Dreadbore . I really appreciate the help!
