Which format is this deck for? ..Modern?

CocoCrispy1337 says... #3

Yes unfortunately if I make it Standard it won't be as good but I'm working on trying to make a Standard type deck. There's only a few cards that are not standard. @Aeonikus

It's also good for EDH, Legacy, Vintage and none of these cards are banned for Commander so if you add to this deck it can potently be used for Commander. @Aeonikus

it looks like you're quite new to modern format. I just thought you should know that without disruption or even boardwipes, most modern decks (aggro and combo) will kill you by turn 4. Even my modern midrange deck plans to play 4 drops on turn 3. If you're not running control, then having a turn 5-9 plan in modern is gonna give you a bad time.

@HarbingerJK The closest thing I have to control are Boros Charm , Lightning Helix , Martial Glory , Chained to the Rocks and Legion's Initiative . And as for disruption my Martial Glory and Boros Charm deals with that, give a creature plus(+)3 toughness make a Lightning Bolt useless, Or counter Wrath of God or Murder by making your creatures indestructible. So like my 5-9 turn plan works great for attacking for a whole bunch later on, but I feel like I have a high enough defense early on to be able to survive well enough, but idk do you think I should like add more ''Haste'' type cards to improve my speed?

November 13, 2013 8:48 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #7

well by disruption I mean things like Mana Leak and Thoughtseize . But yeah for red you really can't go wrong with haste. Red is the fastest color so there is lots of room for this to go faster. You could probably drop the Ajani, Caller of the Pride to fill in the slots for Cerodon Yearling . You should also get some more 1 drop creatures too, the problem with aggro decks is that if you don't have a downward slopping mana curve you're going to have a tough time getting ahead

CocoCrispy1337 says... #8

Haha I was googling red ''Haste'' one drop cards and found Messenger's Speed This way it can help me out early game, and late game because by then theoretically my creatures should be pretty buffed up so ''Trample'' can just makes it brutal. I think this fits better then filling out my Cerodon Yearling slots.

just keep in mind that modern is all about cheap, effective spells. You have some higher cmc creatures in this deck and Messenger's Speed is really only making your creatures cost 1 more mana for that haste

November 13, 2013 9:42 p.m.

True you make a good point but I'm also paying that 1 mana for Trample which can really help later on with cards like Balefire Liege , Figure of Destiny , Truefire Paladin , Martial Glory and Legion's Initiative make my creatures big so if it was just Haste alone I probably would put it in my sideboard or not at all but since it's also adds a Trample effect, it can help me out early and late game.

hmm okay, well it looks like you're really going for more of a midrange type of strategy. In that case I would drop the Cerodon Yearling s to fill out the Messenger's Speed , probably drop the Boros Signet too. You should add some boardwipes to bide your time like Slagstorm , Anger of the Gods or Pyroclasm . Card draw doesn't hurt either, Manamorphose is a great card draw spell since it practically doesn't cost you anything

November 13, 2013 10:04 p.m.

Alright thanks I appreciate the help I will probably mess around with it a little bit to try and get it just perfect.

I'm Building a Red/White Deck at the moment and I've played Balefire Liege Control in the past. The deck I am working on now is an aggro deck that can be turned into control. I love casual decks and I am on a budget, so I do a lot of searching.Looking at your deck, here are my suggestions...

Lightning Bolt : great 1-costed removal for creatures or planeswalkers, not to mention direct damage. I just feel Messenger's Speed can be a dead draw.

Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares : Spot removal FOREVERRRRRRRChoose your drawback, I find them better than Chained to the Rocks because these are instant speed and they will never return.

-2 Martial Glory +2 Lightning Helix : Since you are playing burn, I'd rather have more removal or to the face damage than a combat trick personally. The lifegain is to boot.

Day of Judgement?!?!?!! or Wrath of God . Classic removal for threats that are huge. Plus it is a nice addition to turn four. This or Oblivion Ring if you have any other worrisome threats.

Other than that, looks strong, dude.

just keep in mind that Swords to Plowshares is not modern legal

From personal experience, as much as I love the Balefire deck idea, I think of it more as a casual deck anyway where people really don't care if the cards are legal in modern or not. When you have Dark Ritual as a staple in your play group, you have a lot more fun :D

If I was taking this to a Modern competitive level, I would be playing walkers like Elspeth and the like to use in the 4-5 drop slots.

If your playgroup doesn't mind, you have the Swords to Plowshares option.

@rwobsession 1.) I took out 1x Messenger's Speed and Replaced it for a Lightning Bolt , After Playtesting I found out that I was drawing it to often and had nothing to use it on efficiently, with three this will help increases the aggressiveness of my deck.

2.) I prefer Chained to the Rocks because it doesn't help my opponent in anyway once so ever, although I did keep in mind to put Path to Exile in my sideboard, I'll sideboard it depending on what my opponent is running. For example if he/she is playing a mono-black I'm more likely to run Path to Exile as of Chained to the Rocks b/c it would probably be in my graveyard with all the removal spells or a mono red b/c of red usually super aggressive a lot of haste creatures i don't want to have to deal with so it just depends.

3.) I'm keeping my ratio of Martial Glory and Lightning Helix b/c with the new Lightning Bolt I added in I practically have three of Helix's just w/ the life gain but for a cheeper price & Martial Glory can be really good early game when your trying to protect your creatures and late game for attacking with the big creatures for that KO

4.) Day of Judgment & Wrath of God I'll pass, my creatures are essential to my deck, It's basically starts out as a Mono Red w/ a splash of white for life-gain and buffs Aggressive type deck, and ends up as a mono Green Deck type deck BIG creatures late-mid game with a splash a red and white.. red for Instant damage, white for life gain and even more defense buffs. which is why I have Anger of the Gods because chances are by the time I will need to play that cards my creatures will already be power 3 or greater, and the ones that aren't would of been within a few turns, and it's more than likely I draw a stronger creature anyways.

5.) I'm not to worried about some creature threats, I think I can deal with them with the combination of Chained to the Rocks , Boros Charm , Lightning Bolt ,Lightning Helix and Boros Reckoner Which makes them think twice about attacking.

So thats my take on my deck although thanks for the Lightning Bolt suggestion it made my look at my deck in a different way which helps me out.

the thing with Path to Exile that you should keep in mind is that in the late game an extra land is not going to help your opponent. At that point they're going to want that creature you just exiled a LOT more than the land you just gave them

November 19, 2013 8:38 p.m.

Ya but it also kind of acts as a fetch land just for your opponent. So if it is late game your just thinning out there deck for them.

just remember, there's a reason it was reprinted in Modern Masters, and basically every white modern deck that can run it, does

Thanks for the +1 emask I don't know about Ghostly Prison as It doesn't really suit the theme I'm going for, Although I put it in my maybe-board so I don't forget to test it out and see how this runs against other players thanks for the suggestion! :)

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Hehe, it lets you get some huge plays with the new devotion mechanic fast and lets you empty your hand. Also Scourge of the Nobilis has some pretty awesome synergy with a certain hobgoblin... add in your Balefire Liege to the equation and boom. So yeah, that's my take on it.

December 27, 2013 5:36 a.m.

Really good idea on the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Scourge of the Nobilis only thing is what should I take out to make room for Scourge?
