2nd place + cleaning up comments —April 2, 2015

Took 2nd place tonight, losing only to Blue Moon. Still scratching my head over the loss (actually was swept). He was a good player, I could've had better hands (can't we always?), and I learned a Burn player can be overwhelmed with countermagic. As a takeaway, it might be worth looking into sideboard options for countermagic-heavy decks like Blue Moon.

Also, cleaning up the comments. All comments from the inception of this deck can be found here. Lots of good stuff to mull over, maybe too much, so if you have a question or whatnot, just drop a new comment :)

@GlistenerAgent and @InnerFlame,

can I get a little strategy advice for tonight if I have to face burn again. What do you suggest I side in and take out? How should I play the game, throw everything at his face, or destroy any creatures he may drop, like Monastery Swiftspear? Should I hold onto instants and open mana in case of a kill shot turn? Thanks.

I haven' had too much experience going burn V. Burn so glisteneragent might be a better help but this is what I'd do. Side in all 3 Kor Firewalkers. Save your instants for their turn, not yours. That way you can pump a Monastery Swiftspear to possibly get rid of their creatures. I would hit them with all your instants and sorceries and only trade creatures to kill his...unless his board presence is overwhelming. Don't crack fetches unless you have to. It's going to be a race.

Like I said, I don'thave too much experience with burn v. Burn so glisteneragent might be a better option.

+3 Kor Firewalker for sure. In the dark, I take out 2 Eidolon of the Great Revel and a Boros Charm. If they sideboard Leyline of Sanctity, bring in a couple of Destructive Revelry for Boros Charms.

As for playing, take your time with the mana. This matchup is where playing four colors really screws you, so if you cut the useless black cards you'd win games more often by virtue of having less painful mana.

@GlistenerAgent, should I take out his creatures or just race him, throwing everything at his face?

That's more of an experience thing. It changes every game. If the burn in your hand can straight kill your opponent, that's what you should do. More often than not, it won't.

Are you going to your game shop today to play modern? I think I remember you saying your modern tournaments were on Thursdays. If so, let me know how you did and what worked.

@InnerFlame, yeah I'm going tonight, but not sure if there will be a turnout or not, because of the snow and the cold. I'm trying to keep a record of all of my matches and have kept it up so far. If you look at my most recent update you can see some details from my last match against him, I thought I was winning, but I underestimated a couple cards.

Oh awesome! I'll have to take a look at it.

Looking at the comments on this deck leads me to believe the vast majority commenting don't quite grasp the Modern format. People suggesting taking out Eidolon of the Great Revel in a deck like this is just ludicrous.. Like you said, they are automatically a 4-of.Which leads me to my next point, I think as you mentioned before, you might add two Soulfire Grand Masters in order to gain a bit of the life lost with the Eidolons. This is a very aggressive and fast deck and I like it very much so. +1

Also, do not overlook Grim Lavamancer. Very powerful in these types of decks.

@MagicMike69, thanks! I just took 1st with it again tonight. I'll upload the details (like I've done the past two weeks in the form of an update) when I'm less tired, probably tomorrow afternoon :)

I like this deck. The only change I might make is taking Soulfire Grand Master off the Maybe list and put her into the deck. Not sure what you should take out to make room, but I think she'll prove worthy.

@InnerFlame, yes please do! Make sure to keep track of mental notes about what type of decks you faced and where your weaknesses or difficulties were!

I like this deck as well. I am a fan of the modern burn deck and did my own taken on it. Decided to take out Arid Mesa and add +2 Sacred Foundry and +2 Stomping Ground. Also took out -4 Wooded Foothills and added +4 Blood Crypt so I could run Rakdos Charm in the SB over Molten Rain.

+1 from me!

@Dekonic, thanks! In my opinion, you should be running all those fetches, as they are very important to the deck. Each fetch will let you grab any shockland you need anyway, so you are never fumbling for a specific mana. Also, you are running way too many shocklands. Just one or two for a color are fine.

So quick question, what happened to your plains and swamps in your deck? I was playtesting your deck for fun, and I noticed you had some uncastable instants that required white, and some search lands for swamps.

InnerFlame says... #19

No to mention 4 copies of Searing Blaze that you need the fetches for shedidthistome.

@Dekonic, see what @InnerFlame wrote right above this comment too!

@jacb007, I NEVER had a basic Plains or Swamp in my deck. I used to run Rain of Gore in my sideboard and ran one Blood Crypt in main for its black mana source. There are cards in my main deck right now that use white -- Boros Charm and Lightning Helix. Two Sacred Foundry maindeck covers that white source.

@GlistenerAgent, I've been thinking about that cards since I saw it. It obviously goes in the four Skullcrack slot, BUT do you think running that green mana may overextend the deck some? Instead of me searching out for just a Mountain with a fetch, I'm likely going to have to search for a Sacred Foundry or Stomping Ground.

March 13, 2015 3:41 p.m.

jacb007 says... #24

@shedidthistome, so do Sacred Foundry and Blood Crypt count as basic lands? That would be pretty cool if they did, but I thought basic lands were only one color lands, like mountains, swamps, or plains.

March 13, 2015 3:42 p.m.

scholar says... #25

@jacb007, no they're not basic, BUT they count as their two colors so you can grab them with a fetchland. For example, Arid Mesa lets you search for a Mountain or Plains card. Sacred Foundry counts as both Mountain and Plains, so you can grab it, instead of a basic land.
