Approach of the Second Sun

Standard WU (Azorius)

Sideboard

This is a really fun and fairly successful deck that uses cycling to get to Approach of the Second Sun twice for a win. You can also win in some cases with damage by turn 7 with the Cryptic Serpent flying in with the Cartouche of Knowledge. The Aetherflux Reservoir gives quite a bit of life with all the spells being cast, and provides a rare win option if you get to 50 life before casting a second Approach.

You'll take some damage in the first few turns, but you will get your life back with Authority of the Consuls and Renewed Faith. Start the game by cycling cards for the first three rounds until you can get a Cryptic Serpent out, and use Engulf the Shore to clear the board as needed throughout the game. Even if you put the Cryptic Serpent back in your hand it will only cost two mana for a 6/5 creature, with all the instants you've cycled and cast. Late game use the Torrential Gearhulk to recast Engulf the Shore or other instants, and if you can get six islands you can keep bringing him back to your hand and casting more from your graveyard.

Drake Haven provides quite a bit of extra defensive support, especially with Geier Reach Sanitarium, and if you kill them off with Engulf the Shore you will usually get more back faster than your opponent will get their creatures up. Mirror Pool provides lots of fun options, especially with the Torrential Gearhulk. As a last resort you can use Commit/Memory to prevent late game self milling, though it rarely happens before a second Approach the Second Sun casting.
