Looking for a card in standard that shuts down triggered abilities?

Specifically something (besides counters) capable of dealing with both Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Blood Baron of Vizkopa .

My deck is B/G so preferably playable thru hard casting in those colors, but please list anything regardless of color.

Blood Baron of Vizkopa doesn't have any triggered abilities. Any non-black or white kill spell will deal with him. In B/G, there is probably only Plummet , and that only works after he powers up.

You could use Ratchet Bomb for an instant speed pseudo board wipe when Gary triggers, but other than keeping the board clear there really isn't a way to deal with him.

what would BBoV's second ability be considered if not triggered? (not trying to debate that it is, asking a genuine question so I don't make the same mistake twice)

Its a static effect with a duration. Triggered abilities have the words "when, whenever, or at" somewhere in the description. As is just a length of time word, not indicating a triggered ability.

k. thanks, got it.

Is there anything in standard that stops ETB effects?

I have Ratchet Bomb on my SB already. (to use as u said)

I feel your plight about BBoV. He's been the bane of my existence at FNM for the past few months because I play B/G/r.

The best thing I've found to deal with him are edict effects, like Devour Flesh and the Away side of Far / Away .

raithe000 says... #7

No, there is currently nothing in standard that stops ETB effects. In fact, I believe Torpor Orb is the only thing that does, although I could easily be wrong on that.

November 18, 2013 4:30 p.m.

There is no way to hate on triggered abilities in Standard at the moment.

Your best bet against Gary is to lower your opponent's devotion to black while the Gary trigger is still on the stack. His ability checks upon resolution, so if there are no black mana symbols then it will effectively fizzle.

Well, Gary counts himself, so you'll still be drained for 2.

I wish we had Torpor Orb before rotation to stop Thragtusk shenanigans.

if you are running red...Mizzium Mortars handles blood baron all day. black / green, you could just Wasteland Viper or Sedge Scorpion him away. Nylea, God of the Hunt and Polukranos, World Eater can also handle him with ease, although getting Nylea, God of the Hunt into creature mode might be harder...

just Thoughtseize him from their hand, and call it a day....

Lifebane Zombie also handles the blood baron nicely...before he lands...

well Mono B devotion matchup isn't much of a threat to me. I run 4x Scavenging Ooze & 4x Deathrite Shaman which means they usually have no graveyard for Whip of Erebos . Board control is easy, especially with B/G's top notch removal suite, capable of hitting everything. Plus Ratchet Bomb and Gaze of Granite just for a sucka Pack Rat :)

However, been trying to build a better sideboard and was thinking of cards I'd want to stop. like BBoV & Gary Assphault.

I forget the name, but I know in modern there is a creature card that stops ETB & LTB effects in addition to Torpor Orb

yea Lifebane Zombie is on my Maybe list for my SB as is, that just +1's his usefulness.

Wasteland Viper was originally MB, then SB, then gone.

Blue. All-day, everyday.

not Cancel ... it's a classic, but not a good pick.

Essence Scatter ! or Dissolve or Syncopate if you need flexibility.

Seriously though, countering the creature is the best ETB prevention in standard.

Ragnorakx says... #16

Cancel Essence Scatter or the rest you linked don't stop trigger abilities. Like you said they counter the creature. There's nothing in standard to counter a triggered ability directly. Only indirectly like strongwalker said to counter the creature. Some none standard examples are Stifle or Voidslime or Trickbind

@Ragnorakx, as strongwalker said, "...countering the creature is the best ETB prevention in standard."

Okay, in the spirit of creativity, how about a crazy hypothetical!

Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Fanatic of Mogis are some of the primary ETB villains in standard now, so how about this:

If I had a Hypersonic Dragon and was able to respond to the ETB trigger with Trait Doctoring could I nerf the devotion by changing the color? Or does the trigger on the stack remain unchanged?

November 18, 2013 10:09 p.m.

The trigger on the stack would remain unchanged. Trait Doctoring has an effect on the permanent, not the stack.

KingSorin says... #20

Umm.... Yeah there's no clean triggered ability answer I'm afraid. You'd have to counter him or force him to be discarded to Thoughtseize as people have been saying. It's just the ways it is with gray. He's kinda annoying, and the best answers to bloodbaron are some beefy creature plus Domri Rade , Mizzium Mortars , a counter, a sac effect or a board-sweeper.

If u'r problem is the lifegaining, Erebos, God of the Dead might do the trick.

The best way to combat these two specific cards is through hand disruption or counter magic. You would obviously have Thoughtseize since you are B/G, however you would need to splash blue for countermagic.

You can minimize the effect of Gary by reducing their black devotion and Gaze of Granite does a LOT of work on this (even on x =4 will normally wipe their board of permanents and leave them with basic swamps which SHOULD be easy enough to deal with lol).

As far as a resolved Blood Baron of Vizkopa is concerned, you will need to resort to Devour Flesh or a creature like Deadbridge Goliath that is big enough to handle him. Personally, in my Junk list (G/B/W) I run Advent of the Wurm as my answer of choice

APPLE01DOJ says... #23

well I run Scavenging Ooze and Kalonian Hydra so both of those can get big enough no problem.

Really be reviewing and revising the SB quite a bit lately. Would love any suggestions, that could make it stronger.

Probably should post it in the "deck help" section as more people would see it.

I will look it over and let you know what I think
