Infect without Gitaxian Probe

Modern forum

Posted on Jan. 10, 2017, 9:15 a.m. by clayperce

I've started trading for and (slowly) buying the core cards for a competitive Infect deck, and I'm wondering what to do with the slots from Gitaxian Probe ...

Thanks for your thoughts!

Can you guys check out my list I think I have found a viable solution for the time being for my meta at my lgs but I would still like some pointers. Thank you for the help. (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/20-01-17-modern-infect/)

Hopeeclipse,
It's a minor point, but not everyone on this thread is a guy. I know many people, in the US especially, use 'guys' as a gender-neutral term, but not everyone does. Thanks!

Also, for future ref, here's how to do deck links:

Did y'all see Emma Handy's latest list?

What do y'all think about Birds of Paradise in the main?

That list is from 2.5 years ago. Note 0 copies of Become Immense and two copies of Gitaxian Probe.

@Hopeeclipse

Most of the list is fine. I'm sure that you're playing at least one too many Become Immense, you just don't have enough consistency in binning cards to play all four. I never liked Finks in the board, but that is a personal preference. Krosan Grip is not worth it, just play another Claim or Unravel the Aether/Seal of Primordium if you are afraid of Chalice.

Birds of Paradise mb is far worse than any other cards if were playing Noble Hierarch i know because I played 4 before I got hierarchs. and just a mana dork without exalted is not what the deck needs.

It's what I been running for the last 2 weeks I ran 3 instead of 4 like probe. I've had mix feeling bout it. It gives better info than probe cause u search hand deck and graveyard and plucks a card away which is awesome against certain decks and helps us remove there removal spells and does all this for 2 life and helps fill up our graveyard so the only downside is we have to pay 2 life everytime which could hurt in burn and aggro matchups were life is a valuable thing and of course it doesn't draw a card which isn't the end since card advantage isn't as important as it once was since turn 4 you are winning the game or losing it.

Try surgical extraction tonight I finished 3 out of 10. I'll be honest it didn't get used often not sure if I'll keep it in or not.

To give a better break down of Friday nights results.Round 1 Infect(me) vs bant company

This was just horrible was first time encountering this deck I went 0-2. Couldn't seem to get things rolling at all never even drew a single surgical extraction in this match up.

Round 2 infect vs white humans

I ran over this opponent went 2-0. Surgical extraction was not used.

Round 3 infect vs elves

Also ran over this opponent 2-0. Surgical extraction was not used.

Round 4 infect vs esper gifts

Game 1

Was a back and forth match lots of removal and counter spells almost won by damage but lost in the end.

Game 2

I slid in kitchen finks to try and help with the removal the card that was my saving grace was Inkmoth Nexus which provided what I needed to pull of the win.

Game 3

I couldn't get nothing casted counter removal just drew the right stuff at the right time.

If I dropped my Apostle's Blessings I'd probably add 1 Viridian Corrupter and 1 Spellskite. Skite is still protection and security. Another consideration is a second Spell Pierce and either Dismember, Twisted Image for draw or a singleton Wild Defiance.

Folks seem to have settled on 2x Become Immense and 1x Botanical Sanctum + 9 Green Fetches. As you'd expect though, everything else is all over the map ...

OK, for now I'm sticking with 4x Become Immense and 10x Fetches, backed up by 2x Surgical Extraction and 2x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip in the Gitaxian Probe (RIP) slots.

  • Why Surgical Extraction? Like Probe, Extraction fuels Delve and gains us a ton of information. Additionally, it stops every Lightning Bolt after the first, removes Flashback targets from Snapcaster Mage, and messes with Graveyard decks.
  • Why Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip? Like Probe, Jace fuels Delve and draws some cards. Additionally, Jace blocks and attacks for conventional damage when needed, nerfs opposing Creatures, and allows us to cast Instants and Sorceries from the Graveyard. Perhaps most importantly though, he seems to draw a ton of hate from opponents, soaking up Hand Disruption, Removal, and Burn spells that would have otherwise gone to Infectors or my face.

Tip of the hat to myLover_, who what the first person I know to seriously test Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip in Infect.

Thanks tons for all the discussion, and draw well!

In case you hadn't seen it, RYANMIELBYE went 5-0 in MTGO's Competitive Modern Constructed League yesterday with this deck.

Also, as I type this, decklists are up for 13 of the 50 TCGplayer Modern State Championships ... it looks like UG Infect made the Top 4 in New Mexico, and Top 8 in Georgia and Vermont!

Take a look at the list that won states in LA: Winning List

There are a lot of interesting SB options in this list, and the MD is almost completely pump spells! I totally forgot that Stonewood Invocation was a card, and am wondering if anyone has tried it out. Turn Aside is another interesting addition that maybe should see more play in SBs. What do you think?
