Winning with Black & Blue
Deck Help forum

What are some viable win conditions for modern black & blue control for FNM? Thank you for the help, have a nice day!
Well, a standard way to go about it would be to make a list around Dimir Cutpurse . Even connecting a hit with him once nets you really nice card advantage. Good counterspells like Countersquall , Perplex , Rune Snag , Spell Snare , etc. Ways to make him unblockable...
I guess you could also run a flat control deck where you aim to win with nothing but Nephalia Drownyard or something. Both decks are grindy and slow. These aren't anywhere near tournament level. Dimir is just a bit weak.

TheDevicer I already have a lands base for a dimir deck so i have some breathing room to work with. What do you think of something like Abyssal Persecutor or Erebos, God of the Dead with black permanents? Of course I'm running Phyrexian Arena , so Erebos isn't so far fetched if i ran something like Vampire Nighthawk .

The problem with those cards is that they require you to tap a lot of land. Anything 4 and above is really risky in modern. You generally want to play only spells with immediate effect or reward. Erebos is conditional and Abby requires a lot more investment. Currently, a lot of decks like to run cards like that as 1-ofs. Think Chandra in a bunch of Jund builds.
If you're going for control, you're pretty much restricted to tempo-based control that tries to protect the threats it plays or with a grindier one that has a lot of instant speed answers to the board. Eventually, you want to bury your opponent in card advantage.
The real issue is that you need to be prepared to answer Pod, Twin, Affinity, etc. type deck if you want to play seriously. If you're aiming for a more casual build, you could go for any number of builds.

I had an insanely budget U/B deck that I had some fun with in Modern. In face, this is the deck I based it around: $5 Mindcrank Combo. Using the combination of Duskmantle Guildmage , Mindcrank , some ramp, and a lot of tutors (via Transmute), you can reliably go off with the combo within 5-6 turns almost every single game (and that's including deal with some disruption from the opponent). You may wish to consider including other wincons mainboard. I leave the sideboard up to you.

ok TheDevicer point taken. So what would go in to a grind version of the deck. I'm guessing the main win condition would be Creeping Tar Pit right? The rest of the deck would be like Snapcaster Mage , and card advantage with Phyrexian Arena , and then answers like Mana Leak , Go for the Throat , Black Sun's Zenith , Thoughtseize ?

Creeping Tar Pit is obviously a very good choice. The best win condition is by far Batterskull , since it's unkillable and will win you the game eventually. I recommend playing two of them, and maybe even some Master of Waves if you want.

Im running B/U in modern, snapcaster and delver are my only creeps, then theres lili, and the rest is just counterspells and removal. I do run creeping tar pit as a 3 of though. Consider Echoing Truth , im kind of playing on a budget at the moment as well, and Ive gotten excellent use out of that card.

What's your budget? My first instinct is B/U faeries with stuff like Faerie Conclave , Creeping Tar Pit , Mutavault , Bitterblossom , Vendilion Clique , Spellstutter Sprite , etc.
