Modern Naya Zoo Staples

Deck Help forum

I am working on building a Naya Zoo to play as my Modern deck. I am, of course, including staples such as Wild Nacatl , Kird Ape , and Loam Lion . Also, there will be the usual removal suite of Lightning Bolt , Lightning Helix , and Path to Exile .

I need some help rounding out the rest of the deck...I would run Tarmogoyf , but $$$$...yea. What about Scavenging Ooze ...too slow or no? I also was thinking of having Boros Reckoner and Loxodon Smiter at the top of my mana curve. Are they at all useful choices? This also begs the question: If I use Reckoner will Blasphemous Act be viable? I mean, 13 to the face can swing some games in my favor.

What do you think about the cards in question and what else would you suggest? I want this to be competitive, but as mentioned above, I don't have Tarmogoyf funds. (Would it even shine in this deck?)

Don't use Boros Reckoner . He's not efficient enough.

If you're playing Zoo, I advise playing the Big Zoo version, which plays more midrange with Knight of the Reliquary and Thundermaw Hellkite rather than the weenie approach. Scavenging Ooze is almost certainly worth it in that deck.

well with Windswept Heath and Wooded Foothills being printed your mana base gets a lot better now! Plus it feels like a no brainer that you need Stomping Ground and Temple Garden .

Never stick B-Act in a modern deck :3 too hard to use.

A few "okay" replacements to Goyf in your colors that I know of :

Naya Hushblade / Jund Hackblade / Bant Sureblade / Voice of Resurgence / Fleecemane Lion / Flinthoof Boar / Talara's Battalion

If you're not already running 2-3 Ghor-Clan Rampager , you should be

Flinthoof Boar is good in the cheaper zoo decks

I don't think Boros Reckoner is good enough in modern. It looks like you are going with the more aggressive zoo, so I would recommend cards like Burning-Tree Emissary , Voice of Resurgence or Lightning Mauler . You could also run Knight of the Reliquary if you are using fetches.

I forgot to mention, Scavenging Ooze could be good in a Burning-Tree Emissary kind of zoo deck, but probably not as a playset.

Scavenging Ooze is good in sideboard for Zoo imo. Flinthoof Boar , Goblin Guide , Burning-Tree Emissary , and (sort of) Experiment One are all really great aggressive creatures Naya Zoo should play. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is also good in sideboard if you have to come off of the burn option.

dude run 4 scooze. There's no reason not to unless your meta is like all control...and if so, you can still use it to exile people's spells before they get re-used. he's the second best creature in the deck hands down

Lots of suggestions here. Thanks TO! I think that I may have an idea of where to go.

So Reckoned is a no go, but can anyone speak to Loxodon Smiter ?

Luxodon could be fine as a 1-2 o of. He competes for spots with knight of the relequary but he's good enough for that to be okay

I not only want to.know which cards to use, but I want to understand why not to use certain ones. Why is Boros Reckoner so low impact in Modern? I figure on a block or burn he would at least trade or burn another player.

It's not that he's bad. It's more that the other options are just better

That isn't enough. Three mana should be Knight of the Reliquary level. Boros Reckoner is not that level.

I think op is asking what is knight of the reliquary level

Loxodon Smiter is strong because it is potent against control and BGx decks, and after that there really isn't room for another three-drop. If you're not playing Goyf, then Boros Reckoner may find a small slot, but I feel that planeswalkers like Ajani Vengeant may take those four slots instead. Qasali Pridemage is very good, and obviously Wild Nacatl is very good.

I've also been seeing Chandra, Pyromaster in Naya decks. Try her out.
