Cleaning up the Combos —June 27, 2020

I've made a lot of edits to this deck during Quarantine, and I wanted to give reasoning for a few of them. First, I've added a ton more interaction and counter magic to the deck. This is a direct response to my playgroups increase in removal, which makes Mizzix more difficult to keep around. Also, I've cut two of my combos, the most powerful of which being Dramatic Scepter. I've gone off with this combo a few times in games, and the result has always been disappointing to me. The combo is just a win button, and it's not satisfying, so I cut it. Finally, I added a new combo with Underworld Breach which will allow me to draw my whole deck using Wheel of Fortune. I'm considering adding Brain Freeze as well, but am unsure what to cut for it. That's all for now, I'm hopefully going to update my primer ASAP.

Looks like a lot of fun. Just a heads up, your description doesn't link properly on some of the combos.

You're running Isochron Scepter but not Dramatic Reversal? Infinite Storm seems like a good thing to have in a spellslinger deck.

No Paradox Engine? It is a big combo enabler, especially with Mizzix's experience counters. Such as Whispers of the Muse since the buyback cost is discounted with Mizzix. Get a mana rock that creates colored mana, then cast Whispers of the Muse for as many cards you want to draw.

I like some of the stuff you've got here, good combos and relatively consistent strategies! A few things I would consider to improve this:

  • 29 lands is not enough in a commander deck, you will find yourself mana screwed quite often. For a 2-colour deck, I would say have at least 34. I would suggest cutting some alternative win-cons (Psychosis Crawler in particular, that's better suited in other Izzet decks) to free up space for lands.
  • Your suggested tutoring with Firemind's Foresight to grab the combo doesn't work; both Comet Storm and Merchant Scroll are 2-cost. This can easily be fixed by tutoring Mystical Tutor as your 1-cost, Comet Storm for 2-cost and Reiterate for 3-cost, then use Mystical Tutor to grab any of your rituals.
  • Consider adding some protection against combat, since you don't run many creatures; this is perhaps meta-dependent, but most commander players will see Mizzix and instantly target you as she has a reputation for storming off. Dissipation Field and Propaganda are good at deterring attackers in the early and mid game (I would cut Inexorable Tide for at least 1 of these, constant proliferate is overkill in my opinion).

NivStormfront ah, of course, sorry, I'm used to using TappedOut's default card type categories and grouping by function in Excel on my own. Glad some of my feedback was useful! :)

any thoughts on some transmute tutors for your 2/3CMC combo pieces like Muddle the Mixture / Drift of Phantasms ?

NivStormfront I have been wanting to make a Mizzix deck for a while and this guy seems pretty fun. Great deck!

I did have a few questions. In a playgroup that uses some proxies for expensive cards to test them out, would you still not run more counterspells or best artifact ramp/lands that is in your cEDH(sideboard) for a strong casual group? Even cards like time stretch seem worth running in a non-competitive table.

Thank!

DivineKhaos Thanks for the comment! To answer your question, my playgroup and local edh league views pure extra turn cards as taboo, which is why I don't play them I'm my sub-cEDH version.

We also have an unwritten rule that the cards we proxy need to be cards we will eventually purchased, and since I'm a semi-broke college student all the expensive ramp cards like Mana Crypt are way out of my price range.

Finally, the more fast ramp cards are really what take a deck from high power to cEDH, so if you want to keep your deck below the cEDH rung I wouldn't put those cards in unless your playgroup also has them

NivStormfront Thanks for the quick response! I just have a few more questions!

First, what are a couple cards you would swap out for Force of Will, Mana crypt, Mox diamand, Mana drain, and mystic remora. Those are a couple my playgroup runs and would love to know what is best to swap out since you have more experience!

Second, how do you keep your commander on field since a 2/2 is very easy to keep cleared? Or do you keep him in the zone until you can storm off?

Oh and last, do you think it is worth running Narset, Parter of Veils just to slow your opponents down?

Thanks again!

DivineKhaos Cards I would consider swapping out for Force, Crypt, Diamond and Remora would be Prophetic Bolt , Dissipation Field , Insurrection , and Blatant Thievery . Bolt is a bit clunky, Dissipation Field isn't super useful, Insurrection is super situational, and Blatant Thievery doesn't help you reach the decks win con.

I think it got accidentally removed in this list, but I do run Lightning Greaves in this deck. Additionally, this deck runs a swath of counterspells, even more in the cEDH version, and those are usually enough to protect Mizzix.

Narset, Parter of Veils wouldn't be a bad addition, but I can't think of anything I would cut for her. Every non-instant or sorcery in this deck needs a really good and synergistic reason for being in, and while Narset can slow down opponents and filter some cards, I'm not sure I'd put her in. But she's worth a test

NivStormfront Instead of Dissipation Field I woulf actually use Pendrell Mists, it's such a good enchantment for protection from creature decks. Pretty much with decks such as these you don't want to be clunking up the deck with cards that rely on what your opponets are playing, it's one of the reason I don't like theivery effects.

NivStormfront Thanks again for the info!

Also I see your lightning greaves hiding in maybeboard haha.

@NivStormfrost Also you could replace pull from tomorrow and another card for Blue Sun's Zenith and Stroke of Genius to potentially deck your opponents with infinite mana to make it more consistent. It is worse than banefire since you need some blue mana up, but more wincons can't be bad.

What are your thoughts?

DivineKhaos I've been switching back and forth on those cards. My biggest issue with Zenith is that it's , which is a big blue Mana commitment. Stroke of Genius seems like the best card for that slot.

Fimband My only issue with using mists is that it draws a whole lot more hate than dissipation field or propaganda. It's definitely worth testing out thos
