i think slag fiend just isn't that good in a deck that doesn't want to mill a lot and also plays artifacts. if you play him turn one without a bauble he just dies, you need at least 2 baubles in hand to make a turn 1 slag fiend worth it. shriekhorn and emry are the only pieces that can put more than one card in your graveyard at a time and neither can be done before a turn one slag fiend. That being said both can be played with a turn 2 slag fiend but then you're either hoping you drop turn 1 artifact land plus 0 mana artifact for a 1 mana emry on turn 2 OR you're playing shriekhorn which is just a really really bad card outside of dredge just to make slag fiend work. You need a total nut draw just for slag fiend to be better than isamaru. There are much better options for that slot.

engineered explosives could be good, same with chalice for rhinos and living end. Plus chalice countering your stuff would buff slag fiend

Perhaps so! Slag Fiend is bad when we're winning, but it's great when we're losing! Plus, there are a lot of Mishra's Bauble s floating around in the meta that also pump Slag Fiend !

What if you run a neoform-esque deck? 0 drops get slag fiend (gets an additional +1 counter, and +1 from sacked creature) and a 1 off craterhoof behemoth for your 7 drops lolol

One more suggestion: I know Slag Fiend is the underdog in the deck - but Vedalken Certarch could add a world of pain in terms of denial of resources or blockers very, very quickly.

This list feels close, but the lack of artifact sacrifice is a little awkward. If I'm going at a slower pace I kind of want Goblin Engineer to set up emry interactions with artifact tokens, or to try and become full blown Inkwell Leviathan/Sundering Titan reanimator.
If I were to tweak the list as little as possible, I think I'd just jam in Arcbound Ravager + Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp + Power Depot and call it a day. Lands, spent shriekhorns etc becoming counters on a creature is just too good to pass up.

How about Pyrite Spellbomb instead of the Shriekhorn? A way to ping those pesky creatures like Lurrus and also a returning cantrip/shock with Emry?

What if you use Grafdigger's cage or some other sideboard-ish cards to replace shriekhorn? You'll only really need 1 ofs cause of Urza's saga.
