Deck update - June 2019 —June 24, 2019

Cards that have been removed:

  • Perplexing Chimera : It was a fun trick, but several times it backfired one it was under an opponents control. Too risky lategame.
  • Daring Thief : Too slow for what it does. I prefer direct value from cards as much as possible. I needed place for new cards, so this ended up on the chopping block.
  • Island : I feel I can do with one land less, especially with the new London mulligan rule.
  • Homeward Path : Not mich value gained from all the past games. And being a colorless mana producer, it became a simple cut for another more valuable colorless mana producing land.

Cards that have been added:

Have you considered Aggressive Mining?

Hello LilGuy, thanks for the suggestion. In the first rough build I made it was part of the 99.

But after some initial testruns, I felt that cards which prevent my opponents from playing MtG should not be the 'nature' of this particular build. I don't want to upset people with this deck, but just laying low and avoiding any aggro in a multiplayer environment. Cards like your suggestion and many other cards have been skipped.

I have more than enoiugh upsetting decks and this one is purely for a casual pod. And people really enjoy playing it, while it still has some unexpected finishers ppl do not expect to happen.

if you run Island Sanctuary, consider Mystic Decree with it to completely negate attacks. Worth it if your opponent is already running flyers, plus it also helps out Teferi's Moat, another decent pillow fort card.

lastly, if you run Collective Restraint, consider adding 1 Wastes. it only taps for colorless, but adding another basic land type never hurts!

Hello Snickles@EDH_only,

thank you for your comment. Mystic Decree is indeed a very good pick. Bt it is already in the deck. You overlooked it :)

A waste being a basic for the Restraint I did not know. Having one seems it will not impact alot. But more feels bad in a 3-color deck. Hmm. But good catch. Learned something...

np, glad to help! I was looking at the old "domain" keyword as soon as I realized Wastes was basic - some of the effects get...interesting when you ramp them up to six. Tribal Flames and Collective Restraint are two of the biggies, but there are plenty of others

Do you think that adding one waste will have more benefit? It is just one card that likes it. While the ability from Zedruu does not need colorless, which is bad.

I finally did it and gave Zedruu a large update.

Core tactic rotates more around the token swarm. With some nifty shenanigans running along. More control over opposing threats and less waiting...

A nice deck you put together here, I really do like your approach on the token strategy :) I also agree with you about letting your opponents also play their game. There are a lot of Zedruu-decks around here which are built around stax, abusing the goats abillities... In my own deck ( Zedruu, Enlightened Master ) i'm using Zedruu as a value-engine by donating global-effect-cards like Howling Mine , drawing some extra cards and getting some extra lifepoints. Do you run her as your commander for the same purpose? And if this is the case, what are your donation targets, or do you simply gift away some of your tokens?

Whatsoever it's definitely a great deck, upvote from me :) Suggestions: Kher Keep as a token-producing land and Trading Post to put your tokens to some alternate use

Hi NetholonTheArchmage. Thanks for the kind words. My main goal is to have fun playing a commander that is not widely used, which also has a kinda unique approach to the commander game. I felt that Zedruu could give this to me. I recently changed it pretty hefty, cause I felt I was playing too passively. I really try to stay away from the bad gifts part or stax in general for obvious reasons:

1.) When I choose Zedruu, I choose to play a casual and social game. Stax and bad gifts does no good for this.
2.) I want to do something that is NOT the obvious route to take.
3.) New and/or unexperienced players have a hard time with stax and bad gifts.

However I also try not to be too gentle on them, so I chose a route in between: Zedruu politics with an army of anything from fodder to semi fodder (read: tokens). There aint no freebies in life, unless I get something favour in return. Insert evil grin
I love to try to 'play' the table in my favor and I gift them tokens in return. Eventually it should serve me way more than anyone else.

My main gifts are:

1.) Mercenaries being 'lend' out. Tokens ;-)

2.) Removal; I prefer to use lots of enchantment removal. Since they can be donated away after they have served their purpose. Oblivion Ring , Detention Sphere and such...

3.) Creatures/permanents that fulfilled their role: Kor Cartographer , Mr. Sadface , even cards like Gift of Immortality .

I am still balancing this act, so your suggestions are really appealing and I think I will give them both a try. Thanks! I will be coming to your deck soon.

@ PartyJ ,

I didn't even think about gifting away the etb-permanents like Kor Cartographer , it seems to be pretty valuable though :D

It's great to see someone playing Zedruu the political way she should be played while still going your very own, individual way :) I wish you great luck by trying out your deck in future games and hope my suggestions will serve you well ;) Otherwise... donate them!

A token build, interesting. I like the payoff with aetherflux, perhaps you'd also like Congregate for a pretty big bump in life. If you want to win with tokens then cards like Mirror Entity , Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Shared Animosity could be solid additions. ( Mirrorweave can also be real cheeky)

And if you aren't unwilling to win via combo, then you could add in a Goblin Bombardment . It's already a great token card but goes infinite with the gift of immortality and sun titan you have in your deck.

@ObviousError

what do you mean by Goblin Bombardment goes infinite with Gift of Immortality as I understand that the enchantment only comes back at the end of turn.

pedrolan62 with sun titan you bring it back directly. Enchant titan with gift>sac to bombardment>gift goes to yard and sun titan gets returned by gift>titan etb grabs gift from yard>enchant titan>sac to bombardment till your opponents die.

I was looking at the new Modern Horizon cards, Hall of Heliod's Generosity is looking pretty nice. 24 enchantment (I am running 23). It would be nice to get a second use out of something like Illusions of Grandeur
