Sideboard

This is a form of Punisher Burn in modern. With the help of some powerful and somewhat unpopular modern cards, Punisher Burn threatens the opponent with death as the penalty of resistance. From spells being countered, to cards being drawn, and even repeated damage, all are paid with damage. As always, tips and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Deck Rundown:

  • The key part of the deck is the punishment. This, combined with the damage, forces the opponent to make tough choices.

  • Perhaps the most important punishment card is Bloodchief Ascension. It's easy to get counters with in this deck, and many of the punishment and removal cards double in danger with this enchantment.

  • The forgotten Dash Hopes is amazingly powerful in this type of deck, as losing five life may just compromise whatever spell the opponent wants to play.

  • Risk Factor is an instant and recursive Browbeat, forcing the opponent to decide whether to take a significant chunk of damage or to lose card advantage.

  • Finally, Torment of Hailfire, which is run as a one-of, acts a finisher, being the ultimate punishment spell, and functions well as a late-game card when flooded out.

  • Next, there are typical burn spells:

  • Lightning Bolt, Bump in the Night, and Skullcrack fulfill similar roles, in that they are cheap sources of spell damage.

  • Blightning is a more expensive 3 damage, but wastes our opponent's hand away. Combined with a stacked Bloodchief Ascension, Blightning turns into a 7 damage nuke with some lifegain as a bonus.

  • Geralf's Messenger is one of two creatures played in the deck, and poses as a recursive threat with immediate damage on top.

  • The final section of spells serves as utility.

  • The removal includes Fatal Push, Terminate, and Collective Brutality, for dealing with annoying creatures and other stuff without wasting valuable damage that could be used on the player.

  • Bedlam Reveler serves as a source of card advantage, when the deck has run out of hand to work with.

  • The sideboard features some special case utility/damage cards, which can be used against go-wide, lifegain, and graveyard strategies in particular, much of which counters burn.

Note: This deck is meant to be slightly budget. There are Blood Crypts in there, but that is because they will rotate into standard with the arrival of the next set. Some non-budget upgrades include Thoughtseize for sideboard or mainboard usage, as well as Kolaghan's Command for the extra utility.

Perhaps, with the arrival of the Rakdos guild in Ravnica Allegiance, there will be even more punisher cards just waiting to be toyed with.
